Lost GCSE Art folder Support Thread

LostArt123 · 01/09/2023 22:08

Is my son the only one going into Yr11 having to redo his art work due to his Art folder going missing in school?

Does anyone have any words of advice, wisdom or solace? I’m feeling so sad for him because not only does he have to redo it but this will also eat into his time revising other subjects. It also means he’s not doing the new art work as school have advised him to focus on the redone work.

That's good. My DS's art teacher said that they are looking at progression, so it doesn't have to be all perfect at the start. So, if he's got the first part more or less together, the examiner will be looking at progress over the other projects too.

An update: his teacher has advised him to focus on the redo and to use class time for this while the other kids are doing the new project. She says this will be sufficient and he’s happy with that.

So he’s happy to do that now, and we’re not even going in later today as planned, to look for his sketchbook as he feels like he’s moved on now and has done a large part of what he needs to redo already.

My feelings about it have cleared because he’s feeling better about it so it seems that’s that.

Thanks to everyone for your support on here while I processed it.

Fingers crossed for him xx

Glad this thread has helped you to encourage him to get more support with it.

My DS goes back to school tomorrow and has Art tomorrow so he will be able to get support on exactly what he needs to redo and what she thinks to what he’s done on the redo this weekend.

Oh that's interesting. My DS has double art tomorrow so he's going to get his teacher to look at it.

LostArt123 · 05/09/2023 08:45

It’s a game board design project so it’s artwork related to that. The box design, mood board thing, research of other board game designs, stuff like that. This was all drawn by hand the first time around, with things cut out and stuck in.

Your DS must be gutted that all his lovely work has gone missing. What does he have to put in the PowerPoint slides?

LostArt123 · 04/09/2023 22:15

I suppose it’s the time it takes, as much as anything, eh?

My ' skills have come in quite useful over the years- sewing scout badges, hemming trousers etc, but I don't think I have the patience to recreate it!

LostArt123 · 04/09/2023 20:27

@Angrycat2768 - my only art memories (I didn’t take Art) are from primary school.

  1. We were invited to colour in a picture to be displayed around our town as an advert for something or other. I chose red to colour in the sky and I won the competition because it was so ‘different’. I was surprised because I didn’t know it was meant to be the sky when I coloured it in. 😂
  2. We had to do collages when we were about 5. I picked a piece of wooly fabric from the box and it looked like a local landmark/monument so I glued it on and based my pic on that. The teacher made a big deal out of mine because of my skills making the monument. I was surprised (again) at this attention so I didn’t dare say anything about it.

So my ‘artistic’ accolades have been flukes. I can’t draw, my house is very plain and my dress sense is questionable. So I’m very sad for you that the amazing piece you created isn’t still in your possession.

Could you recreate it, do you think?

Oh no, that’s awful @Angrycat2768!

I'm still bitter that they put it in the school exhibition and I never got it back ( and that I only got a c!)

LostArt123 · 04/09/2023 18:32

Wow 🤩 @Angrycat2768 - that is pretty impressive stuff! Can’t believe you only got a C!!

I must admit my DS’ work was all laid out really beautifully - kind of like a steampunk sort of vibe to each page where there was lots to look at, intricate, writing here, drawings there. Anyway, I think this is what’s gone and the thing he’s replaced it with, at his teacher’s advice, is PowerPoint slides. So god knows what mark he’s going to end up with!

I wonder if boys are a bit too ' young' to cope with the art gcse? All the youtube videos are girls showing off their beautifully laid out portfolios with stencilled headings, etc! I've just got my DS to look at what he likes about it and why - so ' the background is good' why? and write out a list of the things he likes about it. And the same with the not so good- I didn't like this specific thing because...' Honestly this gcse is more stressful than my own art GCSE and I hand sewed a Spanish galleon in applique from a drawing of a stained glass window! ( and only got a C!)

LostArt123 · 04/09/2023 17:46

Aah yes @Angrycat2768, I don’t know much about secondary but it does indeed sound like he needs practice at finding the positives in his work (and himself maybe…?).

A PP has posted some ideas of media channels to use for inspiration, so maybe there are some examples of positive criticism on there?

I have absolutely no idea at what point my DS has done this sort of thing as I can’t see any evidence of it in his redone work, so presumably this is still to do.

Angrycat2768 · 04/09/2023 12:23

Yes I'll get him to speak to his teacher about it, but it's things like ' what went well?' I liked the background even though I didn't draw it well and it looks cartoonish' when I said he should be being far more positive in the 'what went well' section!

Testina · 04/09/2023 12:12

“He's also 'analysed' by listing everything he hates about his art piece, so I'm getting him to do that again 😄”

I really wouldn’t tell him that - but get him to speak to his teacher. Being critical about your own work (in the meaning of both critiquing and criticism!) is part of it.

Angrycat2768 · 04/09/2023 11:43

I feel your pain! As a result of this thread I've got DS to drag his art portfolio out and go through it all. I don't know anything about art, but he needs to do what he needs to do in all his subjects- back up what he's saying with examples and evidence. He's also 'analysed' by listing everything he hates about his art piece, so I'm getting him to do that again 😄

LostArt123 · 04/09/2023 11:20

And a big well done to all these children, like @SoupDragon’s, who got the redo done when in this position!

OP posts:
LostArt123 · 04/09/2023 10:58

Thank you @SoupDragon!

@Angrycat2768 - I think I’ll only get a proper sense of what he’s lost once he gets back and it all pans out. At the moment, he’s not being massively clear and I don’t really understand so it’s not a very good match 😂

SoupDragon · 04/09/2023 08:08

You (and he!) have my sympathy. DS1 lost one of his GCSE art books (at school!) and had to redo it. The art department gave him loads of support to do it with extra sessions at break/lunch etc. He managed it but it was a lot of hard work.

good luck!

Angrycat2768 · 04/09/2023 07:56

Yes it cant be the full 60%. They have two more projects to do, AFAIK. My DS is starting a piece based on Power and Conflict in September and then a set piece by the exam board I think in April. That must count too, surely. Also, my DS also took a lot of photo's for his inspiration, so that must be some of it just in photographic form? Good idea to ask if you can have a look too though. Maybe best to speak to the teacher about the grades etc.

Testina · 03/09/2023 23:12

Oh that’s bad news 😢
Most schools work on that from Sep Y10 to Dec Y11. So it’s possible that 30% (up to half of this) isn’t done yet. So don’t panic about 60%.
The other positive is that having already done the thinking and choosing, it will take less time to re-do it than it did to create it originally.
For example, he will have had to choose and research artists, but he’ll already know them and will remember some of what he wrote about them. Also any time stop starting on his personal response (his own art) won’t be repeated - he knows what he wants to create.
It’s still a hell of a lot to re-do, but it’s not the full 60% or the full original workload.

Sounds obvious, but have you been back through your phones? You said there was stuff you wanted to keep - maybe you took a photo to share with a friend, maybe he took a screenshot of an artist’s work. Anything that can help as a prompt to speed up the re-do. Sketches in his room when practising for his mock? Good luck to him!

LostArt123 · 03/09/2023 22:56

So my understanding has changed again: he is now saying the thing that is in school and NOT LOST is something from year 9 and totally irrelevant.

He says the thing he’s lost is the thing a PP mentioned as being worth 60% of the mark.

So I’m back to thinking that what he has lost is a big deal. I mean, any lost work is a big deal isn’t it, it’s just that I can’t quite get a handle on the volume of redo. He is very determined to get it done so that he can do this new project the rest of the class have started over the holidays which the teacher advised him not to do as it was better to focus on the redo.

He wants to do both, so fingers crossed he doesn’t burn himself out or park to early with exam effort across the board.
