Looking at Behaviour on the app today

it says event: truancy (god knows what that means I assume he missed that class, thats not what I call truancy).

but at the bottom it says action: IE what does IE mean? does anyone know?

@VelvetChairGirl

That sounds like a communication issue; maybe the teacher didn’t know he was at the medical area, maybe the medical area need to email his teacher when he arrives there so they know, otherwise it’s a safeguarding issue as his teacher teacher doesn’t know his where abouts.

Is his EHCP being met? Is the school able to meet his needs? Is he happy there?

yes he does I keep having meetings with the senco and that place is a disorganized mess with zero consistancy.

he told me today he only had 1 of his 3 interventions this week because they were too busy to give him the other 2 and kept saying they would do it later, and they have introduced another rule without telling anyone until someone breaks it (no resting your head on the desk).

the truancy was because he tried to use his card in class because he was pissed off (he can use the card 3 times a day for a 10 min timeout each time) so he used the card and went down to medical to relax because he likes it there and the teacher considered that a truancy because he sodded off and wasnt outside the classroom.

even tho the card says on he can do his timeout either outside the class or in medical.

@greatwave

Secondaries register for each lesson, as kids have a habit of coming in and picking and choosing which lessons to go to, so when I take a register if they aren’t in my lesson I can see if they’ve been marked in at all that day!

greatwave · 25/02/2022 18:57

NB it's generally the U marks that are taken into account for things like assessing holiday fines and attendance orders. So a U is much more important than an L.

greatwave · 25/02/2022 18:55

Not sure. In primary school, from an attendance point of view, no difference. (Though the child would presumably be in school for their afternoon registration mark, so they'd be 'absent' for half a day not a whole day.) Not sure how it works in secondary - I imagine it's the same from a formal attendance point if view, but I guess a school might also have an internal system of registering children for each individual lesson.

@harrumphs

I wish our school had this app. I'd love more info on how my DC is doing without having to email the school to to ask for the info.
Same. My DS has SEN and I'm worried he spends a lot of time out of lessons. An app like this would give me data to approach the school with.

DfE guidance is that a child is marked L for late if they're late by a few minutes but arrive before the teacher closes the register (usu approx five or ten minutes after they're meant to arrive), and U for unauthorised absence any time after that. So if they're meant to arrive by 8.45, then anything between perhaps 8.45 and 8.55 would be marked as an L for the morning session, and anything after 8.55 would be a U. (Timings will vary from school to school.)
But is there then a differentiation on the records / reports / stats between a child that was 30mins late but attended every lesson and one that just didn't show up to school?

MaizeAmaze · 25/02/2022 16:11

I've seen reference to internal truancy in some schools, which I guess is a better description. He is in the building, but not where he is supposed to be.

The unauthorized absence will be because he has missed registration. So as far as school record keeping systems are concerned he isn't recorded as in school for the morning session, even if you get him there for the majority of the first session.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 25/02/2022 16:08

Internal truancy even

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 25/02/2022 16:07

We count bunking a lesson as truancy. So integral
Truancy, which is rife in my school.

VelvetChairGirl · 25/02/2022 16:05

@Catsbythefireside

I’d definitely class truancy as deliberately missing a lesson.
the dictionary definition is "the action of staying away from school without good reason; absenteeism."

@Ohyesiam

I’m guessing Internal Exclusion, which from my experience would say it’s not the first offence.
ah thats probably it thanks.

yes he's SEN and theres been a lot of problems at this school but they were the only one that would take him on, they claimed they could deal with him, seemingly not.

@Catsbythefireside

How is purposefully missing a class not truancy? I’m not trying to be an arse there but it clearly is!
because truancy means missing school, not being in school.

they also put unauthorized absence when he's late which I think is bollocks, I take him to school so I know he gets there, but if I didnt and he went to school alone and I read that in the morning I'd think he hadn't reached the school and would be phoning them wondering where he is.
