About to start year 7?

Thought it might be good to chat all things new starter, plus a distraction from the mess of the end of year 6 - DS effectively had his last day on Friday without knowing, as the call to isolate came over the weekend. So no leavers events or party at least for now. He did manage to get to an induction day for his new secondary school thankfully, which has settled some of his nerves.

Anyone else looking ahead to y7 in September - summer schools, crazy-priced uniforms and ‘they are just too young!!’ panics?

How did everyone’s DD/DS’s first term go, in the end. Overall for DS1 it went well but he still seems to be terribly worn out by the end of the day - I was expecting that to improve after a few weeks, but sadly not. Think they get set for Maths next term so bit nervous about where they will put him as he is terrible at arithmetic but quite good at geometry and basic algebra…

How is your DS doing Phox? (sorry I missed your last post).

Phox · 22/09/2021 09:06

So coming up to three weeks in, how’s it going for everyone?

Overall I’m relieved with how DS has settled in - seems to be enjoying the classes (very excited by bunsen burners!), and has started to make friends. He’s struggling with the longer length of his day, and we’re trying to make sure he’s getting enough sleep to keep him on track. He’s not wanted to join any clubs yet, it feels like that would overload him. Homework has been gentle so far, but starting to pick up a bit now.

Thanks Phox, I'll suggest that. We've had a chat before he left today about what he can do to try and join in more with the others, so hopefully he'll speak to them a bit more today but he's so shy and nervous he finds it hard and was looking quite unhappy when he left.

Phox · 08/09/2021 07:17

Friolero I’ve told ds to try to get into a chat with someone as he’s leaving the lesson before break, maybe the person he sat next to or someone he’s spotted as approachable - if he’s walking out with someone chatting it’s much easier to drift into hanging out with them for break. Just a comment about the lesson or something. Hope it gets easier for him.

My DS started today, it didn't go that well, he is very shy and seemed to be on his own a bit at break and lunch. He has friends from primary but they're not in the same form, and seems to think most of the boys in his form already know each other. I've encouraged him to try and join in with them tomorrow anyway, but he gets very anxious in social situations.

UncomfortableSilence · 07/09/2021 19:43

Glad it seems to be going well for everyone, DD still seems happy, loving all the new lessons, she's seems a bit hyper at the moment so expecting a crash soon.

Navigating the canteen has been interesting, she's worked out the cold food queue is quicker so unless she spies her sister who is a sixth former and gets to go straight in, she's been sticking with this. Not loving the book covering Confused

Letter about a test next week to set them for Maths and Science already!

pinkcattydude · 07/09/2021 19:41

Not a great first day DS forgot his water I told him to buy some from canteen but he purchased a slushy instead Hmm so dehydrated and miserable at pick up. Day 2 so much better happier even if his teachers did struggle with the new timetable,

Walkingbkwrm · 07/09/2021 19:33

Glad a few more people have had good first days. Here still all good except DS running on fumes already so increasingly concerned about later in the week. First try at the canteen tomorrow as they needed to get their fingerprints set up. I will have to warn him in case it works like @Hellocatshome’s DS’s school system!

Hellocatshome · 07/09/2021 18:59

DS had his first day to day as well despite the school emailing us at 5:30 yesterday evening to say year us were to use a different entrance to the main entrance. An entrance that was not at all easy to explain to DS how to get there after he had done so many practice walks to the main entrance! Anyway first day went OK apart from he panicked he had spent £8 on a toasty at lunch time. We worked out what happened though, apparently when you tap you card it shows how much you have left on it not as DS thought how much you had spent!

Phox · 07/09/2021 18:10

Finally ds had his first day and it was a success - the older years aren’t back in yet apart from the new sixth formers, so they’ve still got to get to grips with the busyness of a full school, but so far so good. Seems to be making a few friends but not only talking to them, so that’s good. Lots of talk about ‘expectations’, and reference to demerits and detentions, but I guess I knew the school was quite strict.

Good first day here. A few of the people he met at summer school are in his form and no issues with finding his way round etc. Apparently the only bad thing was the queue for the canteen and even that was worth it as the food's "loads better than primary school" Grin

Walkingbkwrm · 06/09/2021 11:35

Depends on the school how mixed up they are. From DS1’s timetable he is in his form group for everything except technology, PE and maths. Interesting that some schools mix for everything straight away. Hope mini @Simplyclean is doing a bit better though.

Here DS1 went off happily for day 2 - and DS2 cried on the way to day1 back in primary as his brother wasn’t there too ....

Eatenpig · 05/09/2021 23:55

@Simplyclean how as they rest of the week? Ours are only in form classes for form time then mixed up all day long anyway like others have said. Hopefully she's found a new friend or two.

Christmasfairy2020 · 05/09/2021 22:37

My dd started Friday. Big school 2300 in from 11 to 18.
She knows no one. As I sent her to my catchment school and she attended a primary near my inlaws for childcare reasons. She made friends during summer school there as they did one week. She got lost and was 20 min late for a lesson. But she had a good day.
See how it goes tomorrow.

Phox · 05/09/2021 20:34

Good luck tomorrow for all the new starters - we need to wait until Tuesday! Hope they don’t bake from the heat in their new blazers!! Let us know how they get on, it’ll be interesting to compare what’s turning out to be straightforward or more challenging.

@HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime

The first week is always exhausting for year 7s. I also wouldn't book anywhere for October half term because they always seem to get ill around then, a bit like freshers flu as so many children from different schools mixing during their first 'flu' season it's not so bad in subsequent years.
Good advice!!... Unfortunatelu we’re off to center parcs, butnhe can chill in the house as much as he wants

Sunnyside77 · 05/09/2021 09:51

Thank you. I will do😊

bocodellobo · 05/09/2021 09:46

@Sunnyside77 you need to start a new thread

Sunnyside77 · 05/09/2021 07:32

I need some advise regarding Emanuel and their sports facilities, pls. My son is into football (kind of only sport he wants to play and is good at) and seeing that football was introduced quite recently will he be playing football each term and have fixtures? Or do they all have to do f.ex Rugby first term, hockey second and then football? Or is it all year round if you are selected for their team? Can anyone tell me a bit about it. Many thanks 😊

louisejxxx · 04/09/2021 11:14

Ds not starting until Tuesday so we’re still waiting patiently here, although I’ve just dropped him off at scout camp for the day & night. Glad he has Monday to just chill afterwards - will be particularly nice as dd is back that day so can spend the day with him. This weekend looks like lots of name label sewing for me!

Hellocatshome · 04/09/2021 10:59

@Walkingbkwrm it is a lot I agree! No idea re instruction/stamina I don't watch just drop off and pick up, I try to know as little about it as possible so I'm not tempted to analyse what he's doing. I just provide the transport and the food.

Walkingbkwrm · 04/09/2021 10:55

That’s a lot of swimming @Hellocatshome. How much is instruction and how much stamina building? Maybe a lot of the tiredness is mental due to taking in all the new stuff. So if it’s just building their fitness back up after the summer your DS will be ok. Fingers crossed.
DS has scouts too @Taswama - also doesn’t start next week but I think that’s so leaders can meet next week to plan the term rather than anything else.
I imagine there’s a lot of unofficial “rules” like the back of the bus one - lucky your DS catches on quick @MsWalterMitty!

UncomfortableSilence · 04/09/2021 06:59

DD was shattered last night after the two days and I remember DD1 being the same. It's an incredible amount to take in alongside the adrenaline and nerves, some of the Y7s at my school were physically shaking.

I feel like it takes them to about half term to really get used to the routines and expectations, the teachers, learning their way around. Glad it's the weekend.

Taswama · 03/09/2021 20:27

I can understand your concerns re tiredness @Hellocatshome . I'm glad that Scouts doesn't restart until 17 September. (DS2's only weekday activity).
