Hey parents, my DD has a sport scholarship event with Tormead this weekend, just wondering if the school will send out the results for everyone at once (scholarship or not) or if they are posted separately? Sorry, new to the system, just trying to work out how long the 'long wait' will be! Thanks ;-)

Hi @fartoomanychoices, I agree with the PP, there's no point trying to guess anything until the fat lady sings. I know many parents and DCs will have their favourite school and will be apprehensive right about now, but you can't make any choices until the offers are in. On the tormead front, I agree with the pp, tormead will probably offer at a ratio of 3 offers to each place. It will all depend on how many places Tormead has available, as their prep school also feeds their senior school, so if their year 6 is large, there will be less places for externals at 11+. Its all a bit of a chess game. I recommend you send your DD big positive vibes for tomorrow and then await the next step when the offers are sent out. I'm sure tou DD will do well at the other schools too.
I also agree with PP, tormead is a great school so your apprehension is not misplaced!

@fartoomanychoices , also best of luck to your dd tomorrow. I have friends with dd at Tormead and it's a very good school.

sunshineclouds24 · 03/01/2022 21:45

@fartoomanychoices , just some general info from a Surrey parent. All the schools make around 3 offers per place and Tormead will make at least that number. If your dd doesn't get a place then she may get a waiting list place and waiting lists move from March up until the start of term in September. It's best to try and not make decisions about accepting offers until you have all the offers in front of you which is only a few weeks away.
It's helpful to remember that most of the dd sitting Tormead are also sitting many other local schools from Notre Dame to Putney High and everywhere in between and some will be aiming for Guildford high and St Cats Bramley as well as all the local mixed private schools. As Guildford is on a train line Tormead is very accessible but some choose a school closer to home (ie nearer to London) in the end hence the "decline" rate.

Hi All, sorry to resurrect a old thread, however after reading last year's posts, I might as well ask my question on the end.

Has anyone else applied for 11+ at Tormead this year? We've moved back to the UK from Hong Kong and have applied for it alongside 2 other Surrey independents. Does anyone know how many places they make available each year and what the number of applicants per place is? DD has her online interview tomorrow and having never done this before, i'm way more nervous about these senior school processes than her! She really loved it, and i'm torn between here and another.... does the UK independent system always feel so secret squirrel?! Confused Thanks in advance. Smile

Thank you so much for your reply and advice. Very kind of you to take the time. I really appreciate it.

Robberto · 05/03/2021 10:35

Hi @VMM2603, congrats to your daughter! We're at TM in the Juniors, it's a lovely school, so I hope your daughter will enjoy all her years there! Like the PP said, they have always run something to make sure the girls are comfortable and confident on their first day. During the pandemic, since September, the school has done loads of really clever things to keep up all the 'traditions' and events we do each year, so i'm sure they will come up with something. The girls are kind and friendly and my DD has a couple of mates in year 6 (soon to be year 7 with your daughter!) and they're a great bunch of young women.

GuerrillaShoppa · 05/03/2021 08:51

Pre-pandemic, there was always a New Girls' afternoon in about the third week of June (at which there was also an opportunity for parents to buy second-hand uniform pre pick-up). I'm afraid that I don't know if that will be running this year and, if so, what format it might take.

Maybe give the school a call but I would leave it for a week or so as they are currently running the Covid testing programme ahead of the big return to school on Monday (with a further two tests for all age groups next week on top of teaching) so I fully expect them to have their hands full with that at the moment.

VMM2603 · 05/03/2021 07:28

Hello Ladies
I'm new to mumsnet so I do hope this is OK yo ask. My daughter will be starting year 7 at Tormead this September. We live in weybridge and she won't know anyone. Does anyone know if they do a new girl's day/induction where she might get to meet the other girls?
Many thanks 🙏

Rosesurrey · 25/01/2021 19:04

@starlilly88 oh I see. Yeah the urnfield is still in its final planning phase, that is what we were told on the open evening. No news about any on site pitches that I know about, sorry. They may have mentioned it, but I’ve forgotten if that’s the case. Someone else mentioned there was a new gym being built.
I guess it’s hard to see what’s physically happening with schools closed.

starlilly88 · 25/01/2021 18:40

@Rosesurrey - the new facilities onsite ie the pitches - they already have planning? Wasn't too sure if the Urnfield development had been approved yet.

Rosesurrey · 25/01/2021 18:37

@starlilly88 which ones are you referring to. At the open evening they said the new Urnfield sports fields would start as soon as planning is approved. They said early 2021 to us, so soon?
What are the on site ones?

starlilly88 · 25/01/2021 17:49

Any Tormead parents know when the construction of the new facilities will start on site and at the sports ground?

JasonRules · 24/01/2021 19:47

@starlilly88 thats what were hoping for then as DD worked so hard i would love her to have a choice. Previously we're torn between the two. Yes, we assumed that too, slightly confuzzled by it to be honest. It's getting a bit of a boring theme on here now, but the StCats process was 'not normal' so maybe that affected it, and Tormead switched to that ISEB test and brought it forward. We did find it hard to feel ready for that, so maybe DD didnt do her normal best. It's cool anyway as we have an offer, just intrigued.... strange times this covid year. Thanks again

starlilly88 · 24/01/2021 18:46

Interesting that you got St Cats and not Tormead, thought St Cats much harder to get into. I expect there will be some declining places at Tormead fairly quickly as it's often a back up for GHS. Hopefully you will get a call before early March when you need to accept

JasonRules · 24/01/2021 15:40

Hey mums and dads, been following the thread with interest. Got a thumbs-up St.Cats email and a waitlist for Tormead. Anyone familiar with the waitlist process, do we have to accept St.Cats to make sure we don't loose a place anywhere, or can we wait and see if we get Tormead too - i.e. does anyone know how long it takes before you know whether your accepted off the waitlist or not? Be good to be able to make a real choice between the two, obviously. cheers, Jase.

Moppetsgalore · 23/01/2021 22:57

Got ours TM from this afternoon, Aldershot area for post. Got in, DD very pleased. Hoping all your happy news is in a mail bag for Monday!

Rosesurrey · 23/01/2021 11:08

We havent had our post yet, so who knows. Might depend on whether you area is having delays at their local depot. friends of ours seem to always get mail (posed the same day) quicker than us.... Their on the next road along but come under Woking and we're guildford! ahhhhhhhh!!!!! The wait!!!! If not today, likely to be Monday i guess for GHS and Tormead.

workingnine2five · 23/01/2021 11:04

Hey Parents, they were definitely sent yesterday.

The Tormead Head rang all schools to tell their Headteachers who was successful, who was not and any reasons etc., ahead of the mail. He confirmed to my Headmistress that they were sent direct to sorting office yesterday. Sadly I think everyone is at the mercy of Royal Mail!

Yossahughes · 23/01/2021 11:03

Nothing in the post here from GHS or Tormead

starlilly88 · 23/01/2021 10:24

Thought they would definitely get them out as GHS and St Cats sending/sent theirs out. Maybe just not arrived for us

GuildfordMum77 · 23/01/2021 10:19

Oh @starlilly88 how frustrating, so sorry. We haven’t had our post yet. It still says on the TM website that they were ‘aiming’ to get letters out yesterday. Maybe they didn’t manage it in time. Let’s see if anyone else gets theirs. Don’t panic yet!

starlilly88 · 23/01/2021 09:35

No letter from Tormead in our post, has anyone else had a letter today?

starlilly88 · 22/01/2021 21:25

I am definitely trying to find out who coped well in the lockdowns and provided proper lessons, and also the reactions to the lockdown in January. I have been impressed with what I've heard from most, but St Cats stands out as the one which has been quite poor. No school is perfect but most have done their best and been pretty good. My prep has been amazing throughout

workingnine2five · 22/01/2021 19:36

@corriebob I agree and I also know first hand (perhaps like you?) what it's been like at the sharp end of education during this pandemic.

However, like every crisis, it exposes good leaders and weak performers.

In March last year, we saw the writing on the wall and tried really hard at our school to be outstanding at every step. Fundamentally prep schools run financially, pretty tight ships and dropping the ball wasn't an option. We pulled it off, did well and parent feedback has been great.... plus super motivating for the staff who have beeb outstanding. People talk, word spreads and (unlike some of our competitors) thankfully our future enrolment looks to be sound.

My point is (and this isn't singling out any school) that some establishments have done very well and some have not. They were all dealt the same set of cards (obviously not comparing between state and indi here) and the decisions (or lack thereof) are testament to that school's leadership, staff and governors.

When picking a school, any school, one should look at all the fundamentals, from results, to facilities, to location, to fees, or indeed to how one 'feels'......but they must always look at how the school is run too and nothing but a good old fashioned pandemic will shine light on that.

So yes, I agree with you, but one must take the whole picture.
