secondary school fee support

Hi all, hope everyone managed to have a good start to the year ...

looks really exciting here, was wondering if anyone could help direct me into charity foundation that can help to support fees as my daughter has been offered a secondary fee paying school. I tried a handfull of trusts but they either for universities and special criteria as well as the E.T.F...being on low income, appreciate any guidance where we could head towards...

I actually can’t believe this poster is for real. Surely not?

Hersetta427 · 04/01/2021 10:06

I don't really understand why your daughter didn't sit the 11+ exams for grammar schools which would be excellent (and free) option or did she and didn't pass?

You seem to be hanging all your hopes on a private school but with no means of paying for it. As everyone has said, you need to accept the reality of the situation - your daughter will need to go to a state school. There is no happy answer to your question that there must be some way to resolve the situation as there isn't.

Hoppinggreen · 03/01/2021 21:11

I think maybe OP isn’t originally from The Uk and thinks there must be a way round things and/or does t understand how this works.
I also think a well meaning Bursar may have said “try a charity” when the school couldn’t offer anything so OP has read more into this than was meant
However, having told repeatedly on this thread and their previous one there really isn’t they do need to concentrate on preparing their child for the school they will actually be going to

@AIMD

Am I missing something? I don’t understand the WHY of this situation. Why do you think your child need this private school specifically and why do you think there would be funding for her above other children?
Because her child is amazing

CommunistLegoBloc · 03/01/2021 20:32

Are you hoping someone PMs you with an offer of paying the fees? That's literally the only thing I can believe you think you'll get from this thread now...

LIZS · 03/01/2021 20:22

I fear op may have gone into this process without taking time to understand how it works, the timeframes or commitment, and it has backfired. Is your dd in a state school at the moment?

MrsWonderland · 03/01/2021 20:18

This is such a weird thread. OP what are you hoping to achieve here, you keep coming back saying it must be possible when everyone keeps explaining to you that it doesn't work like that. Who do you think is going to pay for your daughters private education and why?

SoupDragon · 03/01/2021 20:14

there has to be some resolve ...

There is. Your DD goes to her allocated state school.

You can't afford the private school and no one else is going to pay the fees for you.

teachcolate · 03/01/2021 20:06

Could you ring the bursar tomorrow and ask if they can put your DD on the bursary waiting list? Probably you can also try to ask your parents for financial support. I just wonder why you submitted the bursary application so late and didn't apply for a grammar place if you are so keen to send your DD to a great school.
But personally I think your DD will be fine at any school. She sounds very bright. She will be in the top sets at local comp and do well at GCSE.

Iamthewombat · 03/01/2021 20:04

What are you so bothered about?

Have you told your daughter that’s she’s definitely going to this school and that you’ll find the money somehow? Then tell her that she’s not. She’s 10 or 11 and she’ll cope.

Or have you told other people and you’re worried about looking silly if your daughter doesn’t go to this particular school? If so, feeling silly for a few days is surely better than all the angsting and feeling lost etc etc that you’re doing on here.

SJaneS49 · 03/01/2021 20:02

In the nicest possible way, you’ve had rather a lot of replies all saying the same thing. I would really for the sake of both your poor daughter (and yourself as you must be causing yourself a great deal of distress), put in a couple of applications to the educational trusts I linked (if you meet the criteria) but recognise this is a very long shot and reconcile yourself to your State options ..and without wishing to cause hurt, stop dangling this school in front of your daughter as where she is going to go.

Sorry this is a bit blunt! If you don’t get the State school you’d prefer, there are waiting lists and the appeal route.

Viviennemary · 03/01/2021 20:01

There are other options. You could ask family for help. You could have joined a savings scheme. You could move to an area with good state schools. You could take out a bank loan. (I wouldnt personally recommend this.)

LIZS · 03/01/2021 20:00

This has become more about you than your dd, she will be fine at another school as long as you take a more positive line.

nimbuscloud · 03/01/2021 20:00

Are you thinking that maybe a generous poster on MN will offer you financial support if you ask enough times?
Highly unlikely but you never know ..

KingsHeathen · 03/01/2021 20:00

And what will you do next year when the fees invoice arrives?

NoToMisogyny · 03/01/2021 19:58

Why are you not listening, Avatar?? It’s really odd.

lcdododo · 03/01/2021 19:55

No No No And another No

Just accept the state school place and forget about private education. That's the reality.

lcdododo · 03/01/2021 19:52

@Avatar1

...its so difficult i just feel lost
But it isn't difficult. It's one of the least difficult things I've ever known.

You cannot afford private school.
You sent back the forms too late.
You are not entitled to help.
Your child has to go to a state school

Sometimes KEHS bursary offers come through late, as they don’t get that many acceptances, so it may be worth asking to go on the bursary waiting list if her daughter scored highly enough. My daughter had a bursary at KEHS. I recall in the old girls magazine that year they said 260 applied for bursaries and they offered 30, so they are competitive. But lots still turn them down if they’ve got a grammar offer.

@avatar1 it’s a nice school but schools are just schools at the end of the day. Friendships have the biggest impact on how happy they are. My Dd is now at a grammar for sixth form and very happy there too.

KingsHeathen · 03/01/2021 18:52

@movingonup20

Unfortunately if you can't afford the fees you need to apply to state school. Scholarships are available but via the school
A scholarship is no use- the schools do not offer more than 10% off fees for scholarships, most are less than that, and they are not means tested in any way. It does not seem that a scholarship has been offered in any case. If it is KEHS then the bursary pot will already have been used up for this year. The application was eight weeks late, and KEHS/KES have so many applicants that they sort all that out before they even make offers.
