Best state secondary schools in Hampshire and can we afford to live in catchment?

We are relocating to Hampshire. DH needs to get back into London just 3 times a fortnight so commute not really an issue.
Our eldest will be finishing GCSEs when next DC moves into Y6. Youngest will move into Y4. So we’d like to be in catchment for an excellent senior school for the younger 2 and where older one can do Alevels. I understand there’s far less pressure on 6th form places.

2 snags: we need 5 bed as it’s very likely that infirm MIL will move in within a couple of years max (she has no property so can’t contribute)
We have a max budget of 700k which I know will limit choice in very expensive SE.
DH has suffered a mini breakdown and whilst work have been phenomenal with regards working from home on a permanent basis (he’s quite senior) he’s very keen to be near the coast. Not to live on the coast but to be able to access it within an hour or so.
But schools will really determine where we end up.

NellyJames just saw this and randomly remembered your thread Smile

Also, regarding Wellow, (and loving 'Crawley Hill' when they mean 40 tonne trucks hurtling along the A36 😂) the routes down to the actual sea involve the New Forest thus can get jammed in summer.

I also know Wellow well.

officelady · 12/08/2020 19:36

I live and work in the Stubbington/Lee on Solent/Alverstoke area and this just popped up on my search www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/details/55837477?utm_source=v1:5bWFDybfWx7C7AGpeagt7mP3PgcqjuqJ&utm_medium=api
If you want to live by the sea, there are some great value for money properties here, and it’s not very touristy so you don’t have the issue of it becoming unbearable in the summer months.

Ces6 · 12/08/2020 19:33

I have read the thread. If the OP doesn't like my suggestions she is quite free to ignore them. I have given my advice in good faith. You, on the other hand, seem to have set yourself up as a self-appointed expert and think you have the right to police someone else's thread. Rude and unnecessary.

ListeningQuietly · 12/08/2020 17:58

Ces
Quickest route to the beach is down to the forest = totton bypass
20 min drive to Soton station = worse than a quick cycle to Fareham
I'm not "anti" wellow
but if you RTFT it does not meet the OPs needs

Ces6 · 12/08/2020 17:42

Well, you don't know it that well if you want to nip into Carlo's! Wouldn't recommend it nowadays.

It's within half an hour of the sea which to me is quite close, especially considering some of the other places recommended here, 20 minutes to Soton train station (no point in going to Romsey to get to London anyway) and parts of it are actually IN the forest. Not sure what you mean about the by-pass - why is that relevant?

I don't have a vested interest but not sure why you are so against it.

ListeningQuietly · 12/08/2020 17:35

I know Wellow well
(must nip into Carlo's again soon)
it is NOT near the sea
the Totton Bypass makes nothing near anywhere
the nearest train station is Romsey
nothing is easily within walking distance

whereas the Hillhead / Stubbington area has beaches and bird reserves and flat cycling and shops and a train station

Knittingnanny · 12/08/2020 17:28

Cricket obviously

Knittingnanny · 12/08/2020 17:26

Glad you are able to visit and view the south coast , it would have been lovely for you to have visited some of the towns mentioned this last week in the sunshine. I don’t mean the big busy beaches, just the small non touristy ones.
Going back to the Gosport, Fareham, Stubbington, etc areas., there is a local football team with youth teams, a Crocket club with all ages ( all of mine went through both) hockey, netball, water sports etc.
I belong to the Bay House community choir and before lockdown was run by an a level music student. Previously by a student who is now an organ scholar at Oxford University. The drama department is also thriving. My boys enjoyed cross country along the beach as the school is on the coast road!
What hobbies do you and your husband enjoy?

Ces6 · 12/08/2020 17:20

@listeningquietly

  • rural
  • near the sea
  • near a forest
  • in good catchment area
What's it missing?
ListeningQuietly · 12/08/2020 16:50

but Wellow does not tick any of the OPs other criteria

Ces6 · 12/08/2020 16:46

Fair enough but I think you could probably find something else in your budget in that area.

NellyJames · 12/08/2020 16:34

@Ces6, thanks but that’s not for us. Firstly it’s just 3beds with a large snug landing they are suggesting could be a 4th. That would mean going through one bedroom to get to 2 others. Also, if we converted the sitting room into a 4th bedroom then 6 of us would be crammed into effectively a kitchen diner downstairs. I’d feel like a student! Grin I appreciate my budget doesn’t go far and the school is important but the house needs to work too. Even without MIL, that one would be tricky. Smile

why on earth would anybody go through that stress if they were in Mountbatten catchment !!

Flamingolingo · 12/08/2020 15:44

That last house is also possibly in catchment for the grammar schools in Salisbury...

Quartz2208 · 12/08/2020 15:06

You are very welcome.

Alverstoke/Stubbington is still very much in my heart as being my home and were it not for being very settled here would move back in an instant.

Hope you find something on your visit

Ces6 · 12/08/2020 15:01

How about this? 4 beds but one downstairs room could be converted. 5 minutes to the New Forest, 30 minutes to the sea. Catchment for Mountbatten and Barton Peveril.

Thanks again @Quartz2208. You’ve all been so helpful on this thread; really! My husband would also like to express his gratitude as this is so very important to him.
Can’t wait to visit in a couple of weeks! We all feel much more positive about it. Smile

Quartz2208 · 12/08/2020 14:31

Yeah @NellyJames I think Alverstoke is definitely your best bet with Bay House for your DS1 and looking at Fareham/St Vincent College for your more vocational DS2

I linked a house earlier within your budget that I think would work.

If he could drive or get a lift to Fareham Station its around 2 hours to Blackfriars. I did the commute when I did work placement at home to Aldgate and visited on the weekend its fine as you should get a seat on the train

EasilyDelighted · 12/08/2020 14:11

I agree with Alverstoke and the Bishop's Waltham area. I live in the north of Hampshire and wish we were nearer the sea.

Bassettgirl · 12/08/2020 13:25

@Quartz2208 I am from the west country - probably totally outing myself with this usersname that I luckily just made up for this thread! The lovely woods and nice beaches, and proximity to Dorset do help but it took a while to feel like that and we are v happy with schools so probably not much change we'll move.

@ListeningQuietly I love your Southampton/Hampshire insights!

NellyJames · 12/08/2020 12:45

@Dilovescake21, thanks but those places are just like where we live now (affluent Cheshire commuter belt) There would be little point moving. We’re moving because he wants desperately to be near the sea.

Try Fleet or Odiham/Hook - basically the area of Hart District Council. Robert Mays School in Odiham is good (some brilliant teachers there) and also look at Calthorpe and Courtmoor in Fleet. Good, safe area with good train links to London. Another area is just over the border into Berkshire- Crowthorne has a great secondary school with a 6th form (Edgebarrow). Housing prices in Crowthorne aren't too bad and it has a station.

Quartz2208 · 12/08/2020 10:43

@IrmaFayLear yep a school friend (many years ago) we could get to the crazy golf via her back garden. It was an amazing house!

Bay House is definitely a good option for Alverstoke and for DS1.

6th form college I think though would suit your sporty DS2 Fareham College and St VIncents both offer very good vocational options.

Lougle · 12/08/2020 10:05

I'd go with Bishops Waltham (biased). 20 minutes from Fareham and Winchester, 25 minutes from Southampton and Portsmouth, 30 minutes from Southsea and Chichester.

Rural but easy access to the motorways. Train station in Botley only 5 minutes away.
