If she doesn't feel up to a restaurant could you plan a picnic for the (drier) weekend?

Fibbke · 18/06/2019 15:30

In your position I'd be encouraging dd to find a holiday job.

If she really doesn't have any friends or money its hard to think of anything Sad perhaps you could make her favourite meal and tell her that you are proud of her for getting through it?

DishingOutDone · 18/06/2019 15:24

I think I've done something wrong, or rather I've done nothing. Last GCSE today, DD came home, I wasn't aware I was meant to have put on some sort of entertainment or celebration.

We are now facing some very difficult weeks ahead with both DDs stuck at home, I work from home, H works part time and is causing all sorts of stress in the house. We have no money, I am buying groceries on a credit card I can't afford to repay - I did offer to to take DD to a restaurant at the weekend, but she didn't feel up to it (anxiety). She doesn't have any close friends Sad

Now apparently all her classmates out are celebrating and she has nothing. What was I meant to have done? BTW I didn't do anything for DD1 2 years ago either.

ElectricLions · 18/06/2019 13:32

Last to the finish line, he is finally done. German yesterday then a revision session and finally statistics this morning. Done and dusted.

He has rewarded himself with some upgrade thing on a computer game so he is very happy. His brother got it weeks ago but he didn't want the temptation.

He has already started doing some work for sixth form, we watched a film from his long list yesterday, he has the days structured out, they include walks with me, reading, playing piano/guitar, films, and gaming. I am a SAHM who just does a bit of volunteering due to a disability so this is quite lovely to have company!

Thank you to everyone on this thread for the solidarity through these tough times. Hopefully we will back on here for results day and everyone will be celebrating. Have a great summer.

Marmitemadmummy · 18/06/2019 12:23

My son has FSMQ this morning and statistics at the same time so is doing one after the other with a small break where they cannot leave the room. What a way to end! I will be happy later as it has been very difficult to get him to do any studying! I gave up Smile

Foslady · 18/06/2019 11:54

Fibbke - result!

Fibbke · 18/06/2019 11:47

Second party done. Stayed up all night, had a fantastic time, seems not too destroyed. I'm glad she stayed over and let her hair down. No puking at this one and no smuggled booze she says. Some snogging and drama but not involving her!

Foslady · 18/06/2019 11:45

Just sent her and her friends this!

Foslady · 18/06/2019 11:14

Well the last one is done! Much harder than past papers, bits she didn’t understand but is past caring, she’s exam’d out bless her!
Told her to go off with her friends and celebrate at the local ice cream parlour like they have planned to do.

See you all in August (gulp!)!
Oh - if anyone is about I’ll be here on he 15th - Maths and Sociology released that day (3am I have to be up - we’re on holiday that day and that’s the time zone equivalent!!!!🤦🏻‍♀️)

Iambuffy · 18/06/2019 11:03

Good luck silent

DD2 and I went to London yesterday with DD1, hadn't seen her new flat yet, so that was lovely. Walked for hours, feeling exhausted and old !!

Thank goodness it was planned for yesterday, as no trains in our part of the world today. We are semi-rural but very lucky to have a train line 5 mins from the house, however, it is a rural line, and if anything is going on, strike, flood, snow, we are the first to get closed down. Thoroughly empathise with rural households, I have to drive DD around a lot.

Today we are helping at New Girls day at our school, I have persuaded DD to come in and give me a hand. I run the second hand uniform shop, and we have a big sale today for all the new parents. I think after London yesterday and the sale today, I will need a day off :-)

Iambuffy · 18/06/2019 10:52

He had a viral throat thing for the last week. Not too bad. Just kept him dosed up on ibuprofen.

He's our later with friends...that'll cheer him up.

Tell him it’s what on a good day in theory he may be able to get. They’re not set in stone, just from the coursework he’s done.
There’s a multitude of reasons why those grades may not be achieved, but it’s more for giving you an idea where to pitch your future rather than a demand (they’d be little point wanting to be a translator if they predicted a 3, but if you got a 7 for computer science then you may find that is more your path).
And wasn’t your ds ill? That will have made things harder for him

Iambuffy · 18/06/2019 10:34

No idea.
It's very odd.
Ds now worrying because he feels he did quite badly in physics (which he doesn't even need....)
Ds is the type of person who will now feel he has let his teachers down if he doesn't get those grades.
Sigh.

FFS @Iambuffy, who on earth at that school thought a report at this stage in yr 11 is a good idea?!?!? Feel for you and DSBuffy.

D0ubleTheJoy · 18/06/2019 10:11

I've skipped to the end of this thread, from last week... I was busy rocking in a corner towards the end of the exams. We've had such an emotional roller coaster during these last 5 weeks - thank you all for sharing and allowing me to offload Flowers

We had one finish last Friday with Physics, then gloating over the weekend as his twin had Herman (ha!) yesterday. Now it's finally over for them both. DH and I had a silent hug last night to comfort ourselves that it was over and done with. For good. One of the few advantages of having twins, it's over in one loooong hit.

Mine are now counting down the days until the results. I know that at least one DC is afraid of getting his grades in fear of comparing his results with DTwin's. But we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

6th form induction day to come, they're apparently getting some work to do over the summer - which will be tricky for DS2 as they're not 100% sure what A levels they want to do still...

Thanks again, and see you back here on the 22nd, when I'm sure we'll all deserve a clap of on the back and let out a sigh of relief/joy. Hopefully.

Iambuffy · 18/06/2019 10:09

No idea fos baffling!

And ds1 isn't at a grammar....cant imagine the pressure grammar school kids are under :(

OP posts:
Arewedone · 18/06/2019 09:54

Fos agree- it’s priceless when the right person says the right the thing, so pleased for her!

Buffy no one knows the grade boundaries with these new 9-1 so it’s presumptuous and unfair at this point & like Fos says these are still A grades!
How thoughtless of the school to send out at this stage!

Agree with Stirrer the 9s have created another level of stress. DS applying to Oxbridge did need to put his Gcse grades on his uni application and they will be considered but all other offers based on A levels only.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 18/06/2019 09:53

Foslady and iambuffy, sounds like being at grammar school puts extar pressure on kids, such a shame

6s, 7s and 8s would be amazing results for the vast majority of kids (only 3% get a grade 9, right?)

Arewedone · 18/06/2019 09:41

Kitty and losing- thanks so much for the explanation, it does makes sense! I did some googling but from an outsiders perspective it raises up even more questions so decided to stop! I suppose the main one is how the exam questions and answers are standardised across all the many exam boards.

Foslady · 18/06/2019 09:14

But that’s A*,A’s & B’s - thousands of dc’s would love those grades.....
Oh Buffy - why on earth did they do that now though? It’s not as if it’s been sent at a time that can alter a damn thing!
So long as he gets to the next step.
When dd did her 11+ she had to get a minimum of 220 to qualify. She got 220. Those who’s got far higher marks didn’t do any better than her at the school - so as long as he gets the grades for the next step, then that’s the main, if he doesn’t then you reassess and work out a second route in life.
I don’t think the alphabet goes as high as the different plan changes I’ve needed in life!

Iambuffy · 18/06/2019 08:58

Exactly what I told ds1 and he was fine until school sent his last report and predicted grades yesterday!

All 8s, 7s and 6s.

He looked a bit crestfallen :(

I pointed out to him that every subject had "outstanding" for effort and that's what matters.
