A new thread to avoid the doomsday scenario of running out of posts as envelopes are opened on Friday, waiting lists move (or don’t) and e-mails are opened on 1 March.

OP posts:

We still don’t have the email and the admissions website won’t load. Did you manage to log into the website Sweetnhappy?

Sweetnhappy1 · 01/03/2019 17:33

DD got an offer from Tiffin. Now the confusion begins: TGS vs WHS. Up until 17.00 we were ready to accept WHS.... Now we have to think.

Geogra · 01/03/2019 17:17

CanadaUK that is really helpful of you, thank you. When you say you prepped from Feb in Y4, can I ask how much work you did on a daily/weekly basis and whether there was school homework to manage too? I ask because we haven’t done nearly as well and I have a Y3 coming up next

CanadaUK · 01/03/2019 17:10

Good Luck to All.

We are going to choose between G&L and TGS.
We have declined FHSS, Queensgate.
I am about to email PHS and WHS to decline their offers.

For those who are interested (most likely parents who will soon go through this poorly designed and rather awful process), I shall briefly describe how our little one found the exams:

Consortium: straightforward with time to check. She thought most people would not be able to do the last maths qn (whatever that means). She was offered places at the 3 schools we applied for: G&L, FHSS, Queensgate. Atv FHSS she received a scholarship.

LU: she managed to finish the English. On the Maths, she skipped 3 half questions. She got to the interview but did not receive an offer.

SPGS: she was ill the day before, but found the Maths ok: she finished Section A, did most of B and did 5 out of 7 questions on Section C. The English and the General Comprehension were ok according to her, but something must have gone amiss, since she did not get an interview.

PHS: She skipped 2 part questions on the English Comprehension. On the Maths, she had time to spare. She was offered a place.

WHS: She finished the VR and NVR tests and found the assessment day fun. She was offered a place.

Wandsworth Test: She finished the NVR and VR and scored over 260

TGS, Round 1: she finished the English paper and left around 8 qns on Maths, Round 2: English was fine and she left some questions on the Maths. She received an offer.

Our DD is from a state school, but we did prepare her in depth, starting in Feb of Year 4. She is pretty good at Maths, getting through to the Bonus Round of the PMC this year and in Year 5 she got through to the Kangaroo Round of the JMC. When it comes to English, she can lose the plot a little with some of the comprehension questions and produce answers which are useful mainly for their comic value. Her creative writing is strong.

I hope this information is of some use to those who have to go through this in future years.

Away - Fulham Prep is a quite established school. At present they have the pre-prep (4-7) in one building neat Putney Bridge, then the prep is 7-13, in Fulham. Both building need a refurb tbh. They prepare pupils for 11 plus or CE at 13 which is unusual as most preps only do one or the other. They have purchased new premises in Parsons Green which need refurbishing and will probably be up and running Sept 2020. Also they say they will open a sixth form in that area. I think they saw an obvious gap in the market. But I think at 11 plus, you might need to move into the prep building for years 7&8 and then transfer?

Good much to all on the PHS and WHS WLs!
And G&L if it shifts.

sw19007 · 01/03/2019 16:22

Fulham Prep Senior has been open a while for boys and girls. Think they are having a few problems sorting out their permanent site at the moment.

Not long till 5pm! Good luck!

KaliforniaDreamz · 01/03/2019 15:57

yeah i know i am trying to amuse myself while waiting for the council to email me with news

am surprised at that tho - getting SHS but not the others..

sw19007 · 01/03/2019 15:54

Not necessarily about being bright- right fit, luck on the day etc also comes into it. Surbiton seems to have thrown up the most surprises at our school this year. Girls getting WHS and PHS but not Surbiton which was unusual even last year.

KaliforniaDreamz · 01/03/2019 15:52

meh, perhaps all the people i know aren't that bright after all. including me for getting into this. LOL.

KaliforniaDreamz · 01/03/2019 15:51

presumably their wait list isnt that big
or maybe theyre creating a sense of drama...

let's face it, the whole thing is dull as dishwater...

sw19007 · 01/03/2019 15:50

I know quite a few state school girls who got PHS and WHS this year but not many who got both! Quite a few got one offer and WL on the other.

whycantwegoonasthree · 01/03/2019 15:47

Geogra well I don't think our head is particularly special!? I said he was surprised because it's never happened before (this when I was asking about which school we should choose) but that they said they were calling the school of every applicant as part of their process.... I've no reason to disbelieve him.

KaliforniaDreamz · 01/03/2019 15:45

none of the girls from our state got PHS or WHS. All very bright girls...

KaliforniaDreamz · 01/03/2019 15:45

KGS is way more down to earth. right choice imo!

Geogra · 01/03/2019 15:44

I don’t think that sounds believable at all re calling every single head of every single applicant. They told us over 800 girls applied and I know that state school heads would not necessarily take part in this, or even know the Y6 applicants very well.

whycantwegoonasthree · 01/03/2019 15:38

Re entrance for PHS - spoke to DDs head and he said that Putney phoned every school from every applicant and talked at great length about each applicant - really wanting to find out what they were like... I wonder of this is the heart of their entry criteria? I think a lot fo the applicants are likely to be within a margin of error in terms of academics...

Funny - I am super confident of our decision to go with KGS. But I felt a real pang of sadness when we emailed PHS to tell them no thanks. I think mostly because I am apprehensive about co-ed and am a GDST alumna – it would have been nice to continue the tradition.

But I dunno. It's an odd feeling.

It's probably just that you can only hope you've made the right decision... There's no way of knowing for sure...

And fuck - got to do this AGAIN in 2 years. UGH.

whycantwegoonasthree · 01/03/2019 15:34

That was us Lexi20... Grin

1ndig0 · 01/03/2019 15:23

Sweet - yes I guess if you live inbetween WHS and PHS it makes total sense to apply for both. Very different exams and anything can happen.

Lexi20 · 01/03/2019 15:22

Phs WL is moving!

1ndig0 · 01/03/2019 15:20

I do know that in a year or so, Fulham Prep are opening a co-ed senior school which we be in newly refurbished premises in Parson’s Green. No idea as to intake size but at least it’s another boys option and could be one to watch maybe?

Sweetnhappy1 · 01/03/2019 15:13

AwayToday we are in your exact situation even down to worrying about our younger DS's options in a few years time. Good indie lined up which DH and I want to accept but DD wants to wait and see what happens with TGS.

1ndig0 we live half way between WHS and PHS and are in the designated area for Tiffin. Plenty of people South of the river apply to both WHS and PHS I think.
