We have ShowmyHomework in theory but I can't access it nor can DS. They gave DS the details for him and us but he "lost" them Hmm and school don't know what they are.

We don't have a portal. He has a planner, but doesn't seem to write in it. But he's only missed one homework according to his teachers.(he says that he didn't miss it, it was just away when it should have been handed in)

I like that plan Penguin I think I'll tell him he has to treat his sisters with courtesy, and also pay for drinks for them when he's out. Grin

cheminotte · 17/02/2019 09:02

Witchend - I’m afraid I check the homework portal daily and check on progress. I said around Oct half term that I was stepping back on non academic subjects (art, music etc) but haven’t been very good at keeping to that when there’s a last minute panic on Sun evening.
DP is meant to be the go to for maths and science (being an engineer) but he doesn’t have the patience to help with revision for example. So I am massively over involved.

DS likes to do lots of things tomorrow as well - he says its good as tomorrow never comes.

DH is in Paris this weekend. Cat is currently sleeping in his place in the bed purring away and DD has come and said this house is so much more relaxed without him around Grin DD has been stuffing herself - she had two cheese toasties at 3am Hmm and then had a 13.5 pizza all to herself for lunch and was trying to persuade her brother to go to the shop a couple of doors down and buy her a big box of Valentine's chocolates. He refused but did go for the cat's tuna. The answers to the Intermediate Maths Challenge are out now and she thinks she'll have kangaroo. She thinks they may enter her for junior too and says this year she's trying for the Olympiad not like last year were she said she deliberately got just below as this year "there are boys I need to annoy".

I would be tempted to give your big, strong DS lots of tasks Witchend that you and his sisters can't do as weak females - does the gardening need doing, washing up is also surely too hard for a female too Grin

Witchend · 16/02/2019 23:11

Told him his sister was IVF and he said well you wasted your money there. Grin

We're discussing haircuts. I've told him he can choose a haircut if he'll go to the barbers. He says he only wants the one I can do, which is very rough. And that's only because I've said it's got to a length he needs to brush it in the morning, rather than leaving it along.

I think ds' ideal school would be on the computer doing what he wanted and doing maths tomorrow.

He says he's done the homework. From past experience that means next Saturday he'll have to spend all day doing it. Hmm

He's clearly been reading something on the internet (I suspect about big cats) about Alpha Males. He's been telling me that males are stronger and able to do more things because they've been bred that way.
I pointed out that some female spiders eat the male after mating, which shows how useful they are, then called him a MCP and sent him to bed. I think that shows the pecking order here. Grin
He's going to wind his sisters up no end if he continues it, which is probably the main aim of the exercise.

PenguinPandas · 16/02/2019 11:55

DS was very keen on home schooling at primary - would ask how many things does a person have to do to get thrown out of school - would 12 be enough? How many have I done already? Grin

The idea seemed to involve a lot of home but schooling was just maths and lazing around all day. I asked him to describe an ideal school the other day - 4 children, no lessons and you just eat junk food.

We are playing the guess DS's homework game - so far we have established the poetry one but not which poem, a self portrait for art (told him he should get his haircut so it would be less homework which he thought was very amusing), IVR which is actually IVF - a poster on it. Hmm 12 year old boys and reproduction lessons! And a mystery one. Told him his sister was IVF and he said well you wasted your money there.

Witchend · 16/02/2019 10:42

If ds goes by that set of rules then he'll be doing maths, computers and food tech only by the time he gets to number 3.
He did also come up with a cunning plan to be "home schooled" which seemed to involve me buying lots of computer equipment and him playing games all day. Unsurprisingly I didn't go for that one.

PenguinPandas · 15/02/2019 23:21

DS recently went through his 2 year business plan to set up his YouTube gaming business about his views on Fornite, he doesn't even play it as that's wasting money. Took him about 1 hour to go through everything, the plan was impressive but also involves not needing to study at school.

Grin at the criteria

DS1 is convinced he will become a Youtuber, his channel will be about Dungeons & Dragons. So he doesn't need any GCSE's

DS2's do English Lit in Yr10. I am not convinced it's a great idea, surely another year would give them a better chance of a better grade? Though when I did GCSE English it was 100% coursework for both. think I was the last year it was allowed.

PenguinPandas · 15/02/2019 23:02

Ours only do RE in year 10. DD has been asked to do French in y10 but am not keen, its different if say she was bilingual.

OP posts:
PenguinPandas · 15/02/2019 22:59

The criteria for evaluating subjects seems to be

  1. Does this subject help people become rich ideally for minimum effort? No then its pointless, yes will consider against two.
  1. Does it have clear rules so that only "an idiot" couldn't understand it and its not one of those other impossible subjects were rules aren't clear.
  1. Can I be bothered to do this subject.
OP posts:
DobbinsVeil · 15/02/2019 22:57

Speaking of GCSE English, DS2's school does one of the English GCSE's in Yr10. Is this normal? I'm sure DS1's doesn't.

DobbinsVeil · 15/02/2019 22:53

Really good advertising campaign then Grin

DS1 would definitely support the motion for English being banned. It was his best subject at primary but he is struggling so much I'm not sure he'll even be able to take the exam. It's a shame really, as he can produce wonderful stories etc but his skill-set falls outside of the curriculum.

PenguinPandas · 15/02/2019 22:46

It was an advert for an education company with spelling errors. Grin

I am sure DS would love to give his advice. There are few subjects that aren't pointless though so you may get just maths and economics on the list, everything else is a waste of your time. Engineering got a meh and science the same but English and practical subjects should be banned.

DobbinsVeil · 15/02/2019 22:34

hmm what was the deleted message about? was it a spammer?

cheminotte I hope DS1 is o.k, bless him for keeping it to himself so as not to upset his little brother.

I have to get DS1's option sorted penguin and he just won't discuss it at all. Would your DS like to pick some for him Grin. DS1 gets to drop one as he's in the ASD provision, he said that made him feel a bit guilty, so I said he was more than welcome to do the full lot. "not that guilty" was the reply!

DS2 made it in for his last day before half-term. He's been struggling a bit with English so I've bought some stuff which will hopefully help a bit. DS3 has an ear infection and impetigo on his face, so I have no idea how I'm going to entertain the nursery teddy DS4 brought home. Maybe I'll photoshop it into interesting places!

DS's views on DDs option choices Art / Music / Drama / Dance / Food Tech - all pointless subjects, can't make money with art, music or drama and you can learn to cook at home. Engineering & D&T he may do but business studies he knows everything already so nothing they can teach he so he only wants two choices not four. [Grin] Though he did add he enjoys drama. sure the drama teacher will be delighted he creates quite a lot of his own drama in drama. He says he won a sweet in science.

Hope everyone has a lovely half term next week.

DD is asleep and DS says he has 4 homeworks but can't remember what English homework is and has no password for Show my Homework. He said English maybe poetry or anarchy and can guess which of those two is likely to happen if ask him to do that one! DH is off to France for a couple of days. Will be nice to have kids at home but fairly boring week with meh weather.

Well I had a call from Ds’s HoY to tell me how they have dealt with yesterday’s incident. DS hadn’t actually told me! I asked him why not when he got home and he said so as not to upset his little bro (Y4 and already getting stressed about secondary so we asked DS to be a bit less negative in front of him). So good news and bad news.

PenguinPandas · 14/02/2019 16:59

DD was back in school today and came home and asked me if I had sent her science presentation for the group to the teacher. Said yes as she was ill and asleep. She said everyone didn't know how it arrived and a couple of boys said to me there's no way you wrote a presentation that well done Grin

Got to choose DDs year 9 options soon - she's in year 8. Am looking at GCSE options and there's a lot.

Looks like compulsory next year is Eng x2, maths, double or triple science (and less PE), French and/or Spanish and RE but as 1/2 a GCSE, geography and history. Then they get to choose 4 out of business studies, engineering, food tech, design and technology and art, music, dance and drama. Business studies doesn't go to GCSE. She's very keen on engineering and links to companies here so makes sense. Design & Technology you can't take to GCSE with engineering - maybe useful though not sure. Food tech, well she's a veggie! She was very keen on business studies but its something else like OCR though the year 9 options you don't need to take to GCSE but if you don't take them you rule it out. She's vaguely thinking of engineering but wants double science to do PE more, think she might be better with triple though maybe double plus engineering is sufficient - triple is also an extra one, engineering a replacement so 9.5 or 10.5. Not keen on her doing loads unless good reason. She's very academic but lazy, quite maths / science preference though not biology. They do GCSE Stats too. DH is an engineer so should be able to help - I know they have trouble recruiting British students as they don't like education system here for engineering.

Yes I insisted like you Witchend and had about 3 days of complaints afterwards that it was too short. But it was still long enough for him to have had comments about it from day 1.

Witchend · 13/02/2019 19:46

Ds was August too. Grin I insisted on it before he started school. I haven't even trimmed the fringe. Apparently it's good to hide behind in lessons he doesn't like and doze.Hmm

PenguinPandas · 13/02/2019 18:45

Wow we could start a which DS has refused a haircut for the longest competition on here, think yours may have won Cheminotte GrinThink DS was late last year but DH always insists on not getting much cut off so he will want to go next time- argh, like that works.

DD didn't take her migraine medication as she's "saving it as there's only 6" - should get her to join one of those Brexit prepping threads. She says its not as bad as last two. Hope she can go in tomorrow and Friday otherwise she will go under the dreaded 90% Shock

OP posts:
cheminotte · 13/02/2019 18:12

No haircut here since last August penguin . I trimmed his fringe myself a month or so ago after he threatened to do it himself!
