ACS School Cobham- What's it like?

I like the idea of an international school for my son aged 12. Does anyone have experience of ACS Cobham? I had read on an old Mumsnet thread that said the kids who aren't super wealthy are made to feel left out/get less attention(!) Anyone know what the culture is there?

@Flowerbloom9 , sorry no, the dc I know at ACS are there because they aren't suited to a traditional educational system, not anything to do with US universities.
Have you looked at the U.K. schools locally sending dc to US universities? Off the top of my head I know dd going to Stanford, Princeton and Yale on sports scholarships this year from surbtion high, reeds, Kingston grammar and St Richard Reynolds college in twickenham.
1 of my family has gone to a college in California for a self funded course with 3 x A's at A level.
You could always try for Kings Wimbledon at 11 instead of Hampton school so you have the guaranteed option of IB. Their North American destination list is impressive and will no doubt be strengthened in the next 10 years

Exactly . Well said .

@Flowerbloom9 , I would start a new thread in the higher education section and ask as lots of posters have dc at uni in America.
But you need to clearly state if you are hoping for a sports scholarship (which is quite achievable for hockey and rowing if you play/ row at a high level whilst at school) or if you are planning to finance the degree in America yourself (in which case there are agencies that guide you or in the case of somewhere like Brighton College they will guide you with their in-house US uni expert).

@redrobin75 Thanks a lot. I just wanted to know if there are any advantages of going for an American curriculum vs British curriculum if the DC is not going to apply to British Universities.

@redrobin75 - Thanks a lot for letting me know but I keep thinking maybe DS will get more exposure to the American system and can take advantage of Uni placements through ACS. Would you be able to advice on this?

redrobin75 · 16/09/2023 12:43

@Flowerbloom9 , stick with Hampton and move your ds to Kings Wimbledon for sixth form if you really want IB. It's crazy to give up the option of gcses when you are currently in an extremely good and academic prep system.

Flowerbloom9 · 16/09/2023 12:37

Could you please let me know what exactly you mean? I have been looking at ACS Cobham for my 8 year old who is currently at Hampton Prep and has an assured place in Hampton Senior School. However we would like him to go to University in the US so we were considering IB. Any advice on this matter would be extremely helpful. Many thanks in advance!

Thank you for your reply. Thats interesting. I guess on-site SEN support is available but not necessarily the annual testing and assessment that other schools might have access to.

CurlyTop1980 · 13/05/2023 03:40

Hi. I have a friend who daughter as ASD and she attends this school in middle school part. She said that they do not have onsite educational psychologists etc and parents need to source assessments privately or via the local authority. SEN support is OK.

Ljtb · 12/05/2023 23:48

Please can you let me know if you found out anything Re the SEN program at ACS. I’m considering the same for my son TIA.

Ericaequites · 15/02/2023 13:35

As an American, I wouldn’t choose an American curriculum school. It’s not as challenging or interesting as the British curriculum.

applemanic · 15/02/2023 11:00

We are considering ACS Cobham or one of the ACS Group of Schools for our son, 14 who has SEN, and likely to cope in mainstream school with SEN support. I'd like to hear from any parents with any feedback on this school.
Any input is much appreaciated.

CurlyTop1980 · 17/01/2023 17:30

Does anyone have any updated on this school & currently views on the school?

Sunlight01 · 02/03/2021 12:40

@Montaguesmum I am planning to send my girls to ACS cobham. I would be planning to stay there for long. check with the school and they have in year admission and they also have admission in Pre-K

Please share you knowleadge on school. And do you still have your kids in this school.

banker100 · 30/09/2019 14:47

hi- can we please discuss it offline? I am really interested in this school for both of my children, went to see the facility and met with some teachers, so far it is great, but I am sure there is more behind the scenes!!!

Montaguesmum · 04/07/2019 10:18

If you need more info, message me privately. Realise this is late but for anyone else who finds this thread.

I've had kids at Cobham for 11 years. Yes high turnover - my eldest finished her education there and only a 1/3 of her graduating class had started in Year 10 (9th grade - ie the HS. Less than 10 had been there in primary years.. Increasing amounts of permanent families but movement is still an issue.

Cobham currently going through lots of transition staff wise and in terms of direction. There are both good and bad points to the school - as with any school.

BTW we're a dual US/UK family, permanently residing here in the UK.

THEsonofaBITCH · 24/09/2018 14:53

I can only say we considered it but the turnover we were advised is 1/3 of the class every year with near total turnover every 3 years so if you are planning on staying more than 2 years kids will have had to make whole new group of friends. As we were looking at 5+ years we went with UK schools for stability

I just meant it was worrying in terms of my child losing friends. I want to find a couple of current parents there to ask them what the atmosphere of the school is like.

The turnover isn't worrying, it's quite normal for a school that serves an expat (transient) population. I'm sure they post their results on the school website... best to dig in there. It's not a British curriculum school so of course no GCSEs etc
