Is anyone else starting to become anxious and constantly trying to second guess GCSE results?

Less than two weeks to go now until GCSE results day and it's really begining to dawn.
DD is reasonably confident one minute, the next all gloom and disaster.
In theory she is a straight A student, in practice she's convinced all the examiners were out to get her with incredibly difficult papers.
Throw into the mix the horrendous new exams, it feels as if results could go either way.
She's convinced she wants me with her when she opens her results, I on the other hand would rather be far far away on a tropical island with a super sized GnT with no communication with the outside world!!

No such thing as oversubscribed at sixth form, though, really? I work in a highly sought after state school. We take as many as we can at sixth form! Well, fingers crossed for your ds, anyway.

"I'm sure he'll get them, Bertrand. And almost equally sure they'll take him with the odd missed grade. It's money, isn't it? If he's able enough to be taking A levels at all, he might as well be at their place adding to their incom"

Oversubscribed state 6th form- so money isn't really the issue....

I'm sure he'll get them, Bertrand. And almost equally sure they'll take him with the odd missed grade. It's money, isn't it? If he's able enough to be taking A levels at all, he might as well be at their place adding to their income.

Just joining to mark my place on the thread. Double whammy in our household, a level and gcse results for us.

Eusebius · 11/08/2017 09:39

Bertrand - I know what that must be like. I'm sure he'll get the right grades.

Bobbiepin · 11/08/2017 09:36

We exist in an environment where we all feel the Government want students and teachers to fail.

This. I'm a teacher too and feel exactly the same. Starting to get very worried about A levels next week too.

BertrandRussell · 11/08/2017 09:30

Ds is so desperate to go to his chosen 6th form. I really don't know how he'll cope if he doesn't get the grades..........

It doesn't help that they had a 3 day induction, and the school put them all in their tutor groups and they added each other on FB and started socializing together so it's almost as if he's there already. But he's not.........

DD isn't the most social of creatures. She plans on scurrying in on results day, collecting them from the library, scurrying back home and opening them in the privacy of her room.

I await to see whether the temptation of knowing them as soon as they are in her hand outweighs her initial plan.

Then it's off to the college and later out for a family dinner to celebrate all her hard work, no matter her results.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 11/08/2017 00:40

I think I'm more nervous about them than DD. She doesn't talk about them much, but does have a countdown written on the whiteboard she keeps in her room.

We need to go to the sixth form college on results day to discuss her A level choices. We (I) didn't realise that Welsh Bacc is compulsory at A level and her 4 choices to then drop one actually mean she's signed herself up for 5 A levels. So one has to go, but her results might determine which one.

She's already got a B in Eng lit, an A* in maths and an A in numeracy under her belt.

Most exams she said were fine. One (physics) she said she struggled with, but still managed to finish. SHe was irate that she hadn't been taught some of the stuff on the paper BUT when we googled it, it looked like she'd put the right answer anyway due to her applying common sense.

I just hope she lives up to her own expectations. She worked for 2 years like an absolute trooper. Revised really hard (too hard!) and did get a bit stressed about the exams. So I just hope she achieves what she wants to achieve. And gets the results she deserves for all her hard work.

drivinmecrazy -
That's awful. I hope they all do well.

pointythings · 10/08/2017 20:11

DD1 veers from being convinced she has failed everything to feeling she has probably done quite well. She didn't find any of the exams easy (which is a good sign for her) but for the most part said they were tough but fair. She's very able in maths, might get the 9 depending on where the grade boundaries are. She needs 6/B for her chosen A-levels and it's unlikely that she will have failed to get that. She has worked very, very, very hard. We're away on holiday at the moment so I am keeping her busy and full of ice cream.

BertrandRussell · 10/08/2017 19:47

Blimey- is it really only 2weeks??

drivinmecrazy · 10/08/2017 19:37

I'm glad I'm not alone in feeling this way Wine
Thankyou for your reassurance Redsrule , your words calmed me for all of five minutes!!
Who knows what results day will bring but I'm really very proud of DD and what will be will be.
I'm in awe of all of DDs friends, they unfortunately lost a very dear friend just weeks before exam season began.

Yes!

I was fine, and told DD it will be fine, but have recently found myself reminding her that it's not the end of the world if she doesn't get the results she needs as there are always options and have been quietly researching said options, just in case.

Wheelycote · 10/08/2017 17:16

Wheelyeldest seems unnervingly relaxed at the moment. Last week he was really worried.

I'm starting to feel the nerves😬 and counting down the days. He doesn't want me with him....he's going to open the results with friends then ring me😬😬😬.

crazycatguy · 10/08/2017 17:12

Yes, and I'm a teacher. We exist in an environment where we all feel the Government want students and teachers to fail. Due to changes in my school and changes at national level, I won't have a consistent set of two years comparable results until 2021.

booellesmum · 10/08/2017 17:09

Yep.
I think I am more nervous than DD.
She wasn't predicted anything less than a B but who knows how it went on the day.
Fingers crossed eh?

Redsrule · 10/08/2017 14:14

I am an English HOD and am having regular nightmares! However, experience tells me that often able children who find exams difficult have aced them because they have really thought about the questions and know too much for the timescale of the exam. Hope all goes well!
