Continuing from the year 12 - 13 thread.

Good luck with continuing studies, uni open days, driving tests, etc.

I'll be thrilled with her exam results Grin

I'm trying not to get too involved, while giving boring parental advice.

I'm guessing she will go back to her previous idea of doing open university.

Goodness, a whole other level of complexity! So what happens if she gets her place and he doesn't...

Dd is thinking of applying to a uni near where her boyfriend is applying . I have of course given her the talk about choose for yourself, not someone else etc etc etc. However ... one of the units she is looking at has challenging grades and if it makes her work hard, I'm all for it Grin.

(I have also checked it is an appropriate course for her)

The thought processes of 17yos during UCAS applications may just possibly be a wee bit inclined to overthinking and being blinkered. Grin

Yes, I know - and also pointed out to her that they probably chose a Wednesday because that's when undergrads have the afternoon off to allow for sporting fixtures (do they still do that?) - and indeed, the two other dates are also Wednesdays.

Meanwhile, my DD was quite pissed off with Manchester yesterday - her first invitation for an interview, but its on the same day as the Cambridge exam.

Why would Manchester know that Cambridge have their exams on that date? There are also separate exams for Oxford - would you expect them to look up and avoid these dates too?

University timetables are so busy that very few dates for interview are possible. Asking for the interviews not to clash at all with Cambridge/Oxford exams/interviews when only a minority of applicants will actually be taking the Oxbridge exams/interviews seems a bit too much.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/10/2016 14:20

She's just called to say they've come back with two alternative dates.
So, now we'll have to get to grips with what the heck to wear. She wont contemplate a dress or skirt for an eng. interview, and the only type of trousers she wears are black skinnies. Argh.

Horsemad · 18/10/2016 13:03

Think final application date is 15 Jan.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/10/2016 12:32

Electrical&Electronic engineering. They're bound to have alternative interview dates since candidate don't even have to have applied by then, do they? (what is the actual UCAS final application date?)

Plus it's in the half term hols here, there will probably be kids away on hols.

ono40 · 18/10/2016 11:54

Errol what is your DD applying for at Manchester and do they have an alternative interview date?

Well done to your DD Hardcore. Is Bristol her first choice?

ErrolTheDragon · 18/10/2016 08:01

Great!

Meanwhile, my DD was quite pissed off with Manchester yesterday - her first invitation for an interview, but its on the same day as the Cambridge exam. Given that at this stage presumably quite a high proportion of applicants will also be doing that, it seems like a bit of an odd choice.

HardcoreLadyType · 17/10/2016 22:23

English.

It's A*AA, which is their typical offer. Obviously that's a tall order, but doable for her, if she put in the work (which she has been doing).

I'm so pleased for her!

Carriemac · 17/10/2016 22:20

For what hardcore?

HardcoreLadyType · 17/10/2016 22:13

DD has an offer from Bristol!

MirabelleTree · 16/10/2016 20:36

Thanks, I'll let you know how she gets on.

Ono I was just wondering reading earlier posts if he had travelled anywhere and you've now answered it. I don't know where you are in the country but would it maybe be possible to have some input from the London School of Tropical medicine to rule out anything caught whilst in Africa?

ono40 · 16/10/2016 20:25

Yes Errol, recurring problem since he had sepsis last September, happens every 3-6 weeks but this time he's been lucky and not had it since August. I'm wondering if it is a reaction to antimalarials or something he picked up in Africa...clutches at straws.

Meanwhile he lay in bed drafting his personal statement but so at least he got something done.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/10/2016 09:24

Teta - medicine and even moreso vet brings a whole extra level of stress - sorry it spoilt her evening but good thing she came home. Hope she got some sleep and can deal with it today.

teta · 16/10/2016 09:17

Mirabelle do keep in touch and tell us how she's doing.

Ono this has been a recurring problem hasn't it?

Dd had an 18th birthday last night ,but was meant to be sleeping over.Got a phonecall to say I'm coming home at 11.30 - we'll meet you at the carpark. As I drove down the hill her friends mum drove up the hill bringing her home. She had felt unwell and panicy about these vet questions she has yet to complete so came home.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/10/2016 00:14

Oh, poor lad, that sounds grim. Is this a recurring problem?

ono40 · 15/10/2016 23:48

Welcome Hardcore. Mirabelle, your DD sounds awesome!

DS is ill again, hasn't been ill since we were on holiday in August and I'd begun to think he was better but sadly not. Don't think I can face going to the GP again, it is so frustrating, same symptoms of burning eyes, fever almost 40, sore throat, mouth ulcers, aches and pains. Even Dr Google is useless...sigh...

Horsemad · 15/10/2016 22:20

Aww Mirabelle, I love your DD's independence Smile Good Luck to her!

LittleHoHum · 15/10/2016 22:06

Good luck to your dd Mirabelle. Sounds exciting. Smile

MirabelleTree · 15/10/2016 20:35

Thanks Errol. Yes she is but planning to return next summer or there abouts, think there is a new found appreciation for the UK developing. She's managed to get some photography clients and is having a steep learning curve re dealing with members of the public, form filling and taxation. In her own words it is 'character building' and we're very much looking forward to seeing her at Christmas - she claims she is now much better at housework!

I Look forward to hopefully reading about the DC's successes hopefully next summer and hope this year isn't too stressful for the parents.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/10/2016 19:06

One size never did fit all, Mirabelle, glad your DD is finding what suits her. Is she still in Finland?

MirabelleTree · 15/10/2016 15:26

I've come to wish you all well as DD is no longer doing an A Level having switched to a different qualification which is suiting her learning style better.

I was given a copy of the book in the picture - only a few pages in but it is making me laugh out loud, worth a read.
