Thanks for explaining hellsbells . That's beginning to make sense to me!

hellsbells99 · 24/07/2016 15:59

Hello Dunlurking. I know some results e.g. IB and BTECS are already out. From what I have read, some universities also use clearing to expand their numbers depending on the course. Both of DD2's choices are in clearing at the moment. DD1 made a very late application through UCAS this year and received unconditional offers (already has results from last year) even though this was after the original date when student have to choose firm/insurance - and I suppose by then, the unis also know who have rejected their places.

Dunlurking · 24/07/2016 11:45

Your dd sounds to have a very busy few months ahead hellsbells . Congrats to her for the music exam.

We are on results countdown as well. Ds has been looking up clearing places. I don't understand them. Are they there already for people with no offers, or Scottish students? Do many disappear when insurance offers get taken up so that the real availability is only shown the few days before when the universities account for the insurance places? Would be great if someone could explain!

hellsbells99 · 24/07/2016 11:34

Well approx 25 days to go until the results and we finally had a proper conversation with DD about how the exams went etc. She is going to get the train to her insurance choice this week (who have emailed an invitation to a 'day') with her sister and have a good nosy round, have lunch in the city etc. A couple of weeks ago, I didn't think she would go to uni this year, but after a holiday away with friends she is sounding more upbeat. She is now planning out her next 5 weeks or so and then we go on a family holiday - she has a weekend away with friends, a festival, work experience, her D of E to finish and some tutoring to do - she also said she is going to self-study some extra maths. On a good note, she passed her music exam!

LIZS · 21/07/2016 17:34

Royal Holloway. They were starting allocations last week.

Dunlurking · 21/07/2016 17:09

LIZS where are you waiting to hear from? I don't think ds hears until after he knows he's got the grades (Warwick)

Dunlurking · 21/07/2016 16:57

Thanks for the update and explanation esornep

esornep · 21/07/2016 11:19

Increase to £9250 (for all students who started after 2012) confirmed in written statement by Jo Johnson (HE minister) published this morning.

esornep · 21/07/2016 08:31

But if our dcs start in 2016, won't the fees for their courses stay at £9000?

No, I don't believe this is correct.

For those who started university prior to the 2012 increases to 9k, they indeed stayed on the previous fee regime (and loan arrangements) for their whole degree.

There is no such arrangement for those starting prior to the 2017 inflationary increases in fees, since the loan arrangements are not changing. If you read carefully what university websites are saying, they indicate that the 2017 fees will apply to all home students, not just those who start their courses in 2017. E.g. UCL:

""All fees quoted are for new students only in the session 2016-17 and relate to the whole session. Fees for subsequent years are subject to increase and this is implicit in accepting the offer of a place at UCL. UK/EU Undergraduate fees are capped by the Government and may still be liable to an annual increase."

For those who start in 2016 and end in 2019, the increase relative to the fixed 9k regime is likely to be 500 pounds, i.e. a very small fraction of the total cost.

For my own department, the increased fees in 2017 would result in an extra 100k of income for the department. This 100k would not even pay for a 1% increase in salary for all staff members, let alone cover 1% inflationary pay increases plus pay increases up the pay scale for early career staff (early career staff typically get 2% pay increases per year, i.e. 1% inflation plus 1% up pay scale).

I don't agree with student fees but it is not realistic to fix fees once and for all, and not allow them to increase with inflation. Nor it is realistic to fund universities at the rate Scotland is doing (many are close to collapse).

LIZS · 20/07/2016 20:23

That doesn't seem clear now, I had thought so but obviously not for deferrals.

Anyone else waiting for accommodation outcomes?

Dunlurking · 20/07/2016 20:19

But if our dcs start in 2016, won't the fees for their courses stay at £9000?

esornep · 20/07/2016 18:28

The HE bill is not yet through Parliament, but it passed its second reading yesterday and is anticipated to pass its third reading. I think it is premature for universities to list higher fees, but you should anticipate that fees will be at the level of 9250 for 2017.

Bear in mind that the fees have now been frozen for 4 years, which implies pay freezes and cuts for those working at universities. It's not our fault that the government is not funding higher education.

LIZS · 20/07/2016 16:27

Hmm despite reassurances re. rumours of tuition fee increases from our local MP (who was in Dept of Education until recently) we have today seen this report www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-36845106 . Needless to say ds has responded to said MP querying it again!

jaxxyj · 10/07/2016 21:54

Hey all
Just to let you know my friend who is a lecturer suggested that if I can get my DC to learn to touch type this summer they won't regret it! Anyone know a good online typing resource that our DC would find acceptable? Thanks

Leeds2 · 07/07/2016 23:59

I shall know who to blame if it isn't!!

Hope he has a fab trip.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 07/07/2016 23:32

Everyone seems busy! I'm glad your DD is getting special consideration, Jaxx.

DS1 has safely arrived in Geneva for his whistle stop tour of CERN. He's in a budget hotel sharing with 2 other lads and there is a double bed and a pull out single! DS is sharing with his mate. Grin

I've told him not to create a vortex in the space/time continuum, nor to reverse the polarity of the neutron flow. Hopefully the universe will still be in existence for a while yet.

Leeds2 · 06/07/2016 21:03

Sounds like all the DC are being busy!

Glad to hear that your Dd has got special consideration, jaxx.

Sorry to hear that your DS isn't too well, BethanKate. Better now than two weeks ago, I guess, and good that he hadn't splashed out on a Ball ticket!

jaxxyj · 06/07/2016 20:42

Hi all
Just to let you know I have had a response from the school about DD cd disaster in Spanish exam. She has been put in for special consideration at 3% which is probably only 2 marks but it could make the difference between a B and an A. School have also agreed to contact uni of Edinburgh and Liverpool so that is something I guess.
Our house is a bit of a party house too at the minute, what with both twins having finished! I have hardly seen them but I suppose this is letting me get used to the double whammy empty nest syndrome! We are going on holiday together to Spain but between them they have plans to visit Belfast, Edinburgh,Barcelona, Lake District, Amsterdam, Wiltshire ( week volunteering at a summer camp) Northumberland! I am glad I have taught them to use the washing machine!!

Needmoresleep · 06/07/2016 19:00

Wow, luckily no more school leavings....

Monday was the ball and after party. We found a nice dress. Tip for anyone whose child will have "formals" at University is that House of Fraser have a good range of evening dresses suitable for younger people. DD came home at 8.30am.

I did not get much sleep.

Tuesday was breakfast at school, House lunch, and she skipped the library tea. Then a lovely Abbey service and a reception for leavers and their parents. DD then went to the after party of the school she left at 16 and came home at 2.30am.

I did not much sleep.

I had to get up early to move my car before congestion charge set in, as my road is being closed because of building work, and then had a busy day. DD slept, then went out for lunch. I will get my revenge.

Like raspberrys son she has not really left as she is back in school volunteering with a community involvement thing next week. But then it is over. Quite sad. The last two years have been really special.

Indeed the past 20 years, including DS, have been special.

Hello & welcome wormshuffled.

Hellsbells I hope your DD's piano exam goes well.

Wow your DS is busy raspberryripple, hope he enjoys the Italy trip.

I'm now glad that DS (not much of a party animal) decided not to go to Leavers' Ball tonight - he's sitting in a corner, coughing, sneezing & shivering so wouldn't have been able to go anyway.

raspberryrippleicecream · 06/07/2016 00:04

DS1 doesn't actually seem to have left yet. He helped with a primary music event all last week, with new year 12 induction yesterday. Tomorrow he is going in for tour band rehearsals, and his last music lessons. On Friday he is off on school tourband trip to Italy for 12 days.

He is looking forward to some chill time!

hellsbells99 · 05/07/2016 15:39

Thanks wormshuffled and welcome to the thread. I am sure things will work out for the best whatever our DCS decide to do....and if they change their minds or need to do retakes, then a year out of their lives at this stage is nothing! Good luck with the AS results.

wormshuffled · 05/07/2016 13:02

Hello Ladies, I've just read through the whole thread, hope you don't mind me rubber necking, as my DD is a year behind your children and I am finding this thread useful in terms of what I have to look forward to *cough in the coming year ! We have now done 5 open days and are eagerly waiting AS results so that the much anticipated predicted grades are given and we can start making decisions of where DD would like to apply to.
Just wanted to say thanks and keep up the chatter. Flowers Good luck to your children Smile

Leeds2 · 04/07/2016 18:42

DD is on a plane to Portugal as I type .........

Hope those with music exams have done well.

hellsbells99 · 04/07/2016 17:22

DD had her Leavers Ball at the weekend and has a piano exam this week. Bethan, I hope your DS passes fine.
She still hasn't booked a holiday but is planning to go at the weekend!
She still needs to return all her text books to school
.....but is currently lying in bed watching something on her laptop
