School uniform too strict?

DD started new school, and the uniform includes a blouse, tie, wool jumper, and blazer along with a skirt and thick tights. The jumper and blazer are both required, and they have to keep both on all the time unless permission is given. Most of the time she spends the entire day wearing both. The classrooms are heated and she says she gets too warm, but it seems to be expected that they stay in full uniform unless the outside temperature is extremely warm. Has anyone else experienced this? It seems a bit extreme.

At the school I work at all students are required to wear blazers at all times, although the classroom teacher can give permission for them to remove blazers in exceptionally warm weather. Years 7-9 must also wear jumpers under their blazers. The students used to be able to request permission to remove blazers and jumpers, but it became too much of a disruption in class. Now, the teacher will announce at the beginning of class if they are allowed. I generally give permission in extremely warm weather.

My school has a jumper and blazer but the jumper is optional, to be worn under the blazer when it's cold.

They have to wear their blazers between lessons but can ask permission to take them off in lessons. My room's an oven so at the start of the year I issue blanket permission so I don't keep getting pestered with requests.

The majority of girls who wear skirts wear thick black tights, whatever the weather. Only y7s seem to go for socks.

Jumper and blazer is overkill.

No. At DD's school:

  • jumpers were optional (we never even bought one),
  • blazers could be removed in lessons with permission which was freely given.
  • Short sleeve shirts permitted all year if desired, DD never owned long sleeves.
  • tights we thick or thin, or you could wear ankle socks.
