What cars do private school mums drive?

Is it all 4x4s and Porches? Do any of you drive cars that are not range rover evoques. And if there are mums at your school who drive normal cars, like a Ford Mondeo - what do you think of them?

Dd is only starting this year, but from what I've seen, everything from ancient fiestas, to proper mud splattered 4x4s and top of the range sports cars. I've got a mud splattered ancient estate. Either people will guess we've got a scholarship and bursary or we'll blend in as impoverished gentry. (Which we aren't, just low income mc). Tbh I don't really care. As my legs been in plaster, apart from the entrance stuff earlier on, I've been turning up in all sorts, from the bus to lifts in an 18yr olds rust bucket. And it's likely at some point over the next years I'll be turning up on a bike.

Why? Journalist or just very random query which keeps you up at night?

MrsAukerman · 01/09/2015 10:08

I'd say mainly European or British cars. Also quite old as after the fees a lot of them are skint. Old Volvos, Audis, VW Passats and Land Rovers.
The more generations have been privately schooled the scruffier the car.

BertrandRussell · 01/09/2015 10:04

If you believe Mumsnet, beat up old Volvos and builder's vans. Exclusively. Grin

I went to a private boarding school.

As this was many many years ago, I cannot really comment on the cars at the time, but most of them were decent and new cars.

So I was sitting waiting for my mother to collect me at the end of final term. She was late so I had my suitcase with me waiting outside the hostel along with a group of other kids.

Next thing I hear this THING coming, then all I see is smoke..... From under the cloud I could make out my mother in the clapped out yellow Audi, which, at the time, had to be at least 150 years old. Much to my dismay, it seems the smoke had distorted my mothers vision through the front windscreen - as she proceeded to drive straight into the fence and knocked the whole thing down!

Yes, it was mortifying. I then had to get into the drivers side and CLIMB over the drivers seat to get to the passenger side, as the door was stuck shut. To an audience.....

All I kept thinking was "thank god we have a 6 week break - everyone may have forgotten about this by next year"

mateysmum · 01/09/2015 09:50

mixture of posh 4 x 4' and a lot of scruffy rural 4 x 4's, plus the whole range, including lots of normal family hatch backs like mine.

Andante58 · 01/09/2015 09:49

What a weird question. Would you ask what cars do state school mothers drive?

Jackie0 · 01/09/2015 09:49

Honestly no one cares.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 01/09/2015 09:48

Skylines all of them, lowered and with noz

CiderwithBuda · 01/09/2015 09:43

Senua - mostly sixth formers I think although I know a couple are mums.

A lot of the 4x4s here would be because the pupils would Live quite far out so makes sense. (Someone on here once described the school as 'for sons of farmers' and I don't think it was meant in a good way! Smile).

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 01/09/2015 09:34

I think it depends where you are. My DC are in an urban school in London so quite a few people come on the bus. There are a fair number of ordinary cars as big 4X4 are a bugger to park in a narrow London street.

RhodaBull · 01/09/2015 08:32

I live next door to a private school, so my experience if based on what's parked across my drive Angry . Only semi-joking, I've only been blocked in a handful of times. The school makes parents sign a pledge not to park across people's drives!

Anyway, I think there isn't the full spectrum - there's the top and the bottom - both making a point . There are a lot of Porsche Cayennes - big f-off 4X4s that cost £££££. There are Mercedes, Freelanders, Lexusus etc too. Then, at the other end of the scale, there are the "Oh, this old thing, I've had it for years, dog hair, kids everywhere, I'm so scatty..." old estate cars.

There appear to be few normal saloons or smart but cheaper 4X4s.

SoupDragon · 01/09/2015 08:32

if there are mums at your school who drive normal cars, like a Ford Mondeo - what do you think of them?

Do you judge someone by the car they drive?

SoupDragon · 01/09/2015 08:30

They drive the same cars as everyone else. In a variety.

You realise "private school mums" are not a homogenous group?

SheGotAllDaMoves · 01/09/2015 08:30

Prep school car park was an array of 4x4s (Rangerover/audi/BMW), with a smattering of Fiat 500s, Minis and people carriers.

Secondary? Who knows? the kids go in on school/public transport.

JonSnowKnowsNowt · 01/09/2015 08:29

I'm a private school mum. I drive a guide dog :)

weaselwords · 01/09/2015 08:28

It was all BMW 4x4s with blacked out windows at eldest's school. I used to drive a 12 yr old micra Smile

OrchardDweller · 01/09/2015 08:28

30 year old land rover as well as modern 4x4 (live in country). Cars in the car park definitely not as shiny and new as your DC reach VI form! Really don't think anyone cares what type of car you drive as long as you are driving it considerately!

Iamatotalandutteridiot · 01/09/2015 08:24

I drive a BMW, but definitely not an issue or a talking point. Lots of the kids at my DDs school walk or get the bus. From next year, my DD will walk.

mrspepperpotty · 01/09/2015 08:19

I went to a private school. My parents drove a ford escort.

getoffthattabletnow · 01/09/2015 08:19

A totally uncool knackered filthy Kia 7 seater ( filth due to 4 kids and dog). The brakes screech so much ds1 heard me arriving sitting in the other side of the prep school.

senua · 01/09/2015 08:18

Oh - and lots of Minis. More Minis than anything else possibly!

Are those run by mums or sixthformers?

Iamnotloobrushphobic · 01/09/2015 08:16

A wide variety, but probably a higher than average number of 4x4s. The 4x4s at our school could be explained by a lot of the children living in rural areas which get snow in the winter months though, therefore a 4x4 is practical rather than just a Chelsea tractor status symbol. There are also lots of 'average cars' - 5 year old ford focuses, 7 year old clios that type of thing and there are quite a few clapped out old bangers as well.
I don't think anybody really cares what everyone else drives.

OldBeanbagz · 01/09/2015 08:16

I drive a Volvo XC60 but i've seen everything from a Nissan Micra to a Ferrari in the car park at school. There's plenty of 4x4s but lots of small family cars like Minis too.

It's the 6th formers having driving lessons in Landrovers you have to look out for!
