Everyone seems to have done so well! DD and I are exhausted after an emotional day, she has had final rejection from Sheffield and feels very low. I feel irrationally furious with them because she is the most wonderful girl alive and they have rejected her. She feels she will never find soul mates in a small place like Huddersfield. This really is a ridiculous system - American kids know where they are going months in advance and it doesn't all hang on 1 day a month before term starts. Sorry, ranting. Nowhere else to do it.

BlueStringPudding · 13/08/2015 19:07

Horsemad, I am involved in the recruitment of graduates for a large technology company, and we would prefer to have more applicants with Computer Science than we get currently. We don't limit ourselves to Russell Group universities either - so if your DS wants to do Computer Science, then he shouldn't get hung up about attending an RG university. As others have said there are some great non-Russell group universities.

Does he know what he wants to do post-university?

seimum · 13/08/2015 18:28

DS's offer from Soton on Track has now changed to one for Chemistry, which he has declined, so it looks like he's off to his insurance (Essex).
Oh well, at least now we know & can make plans.

seimum · 13/08/2015 16:20

Horsemad No, still waiting.
He'll ring them up again tomorrow morning - otherwise, he's trying to work out if he can accept his insurance if his firm is still not confirmed/rejected, so as not to stay in limbo for ages.

Littleham · 13/08/2015 16:18

Great news GinandJag. Royal Holloway is lovely, especially the Founders Building. Well done to others who have posted as well.

Sorry to hear about Durham Waiting but nice to see someone else coming to York. Smile

cathy. I live 20 minutes from Bristol so if you need me to do anything let me know. So sorry your dd is upset.

Has your DS heard anything yet seimum?

Horsemad · 13/08/2015 16:03

I agree with you seimum, I've just said the same to him.
It's his choice now, totally upto him what he does.

GinandJag · 13/08/2015 16:02

DD is going to Royal Holloway University of London which we are very happy about.

seimum · 13/08/2015 15:37

Horsemad If he's not got the motivation to work on his own, then going to an RG uni would be a bad move - he will fail & be in a worse position than now.(Speaking from experience as DD1 got a 3rd in her degree, which was almost worse than not having one at all)

Better take a year off until he has generated the drive to go from within himself

Horsemad · 13/08/2015 15:18

He now seems really apathetic about applying for Comp Sci at all - he's a lazy little toad really and I think he's just happy to do nothing now, knowing he has an offer for Chem.
Aarrgghh, can feel my blood pressure rising.

voilets · 13/08/2015 14:57

Surrey, Bath, Loughborough - none of them are RG - great high ranking unis

voilets · 13/08/2015 14:56

do agree - do the course they want. Many very, very good unis that are not RG. We were very happy with our insurance choice if needed.

Apparently, a lot of places on clearing - so go back to league tables and rethink uni choices. Friend of ours went all way to Glasgow through clearing last year - not happy to start with - year on very happy.

Horsemad · 13/08/2015 14:50

I know, but I think DH will influence him to stick with RG Uni Sad

seimum · 13/08/2015 14:48

Horsemad I am sure there are plenty of unis that will offer Comp Sci with your DS's grades - they may not be Russell Group, but still respectable.

Better to go there and enjoy the course and do well, rather than go for a course you're not interested in at a RG uni, and then fail because you can't/won't keep up with the work

Horsemad · 13/08/2015 14:37

Desperate is what I'm thinking seimum. I'm really bothered that DS will choose that because he can't get in to do Comp Sci and not because he really fancies doing Chemistry. Confused

seimum · 13/08/2015 14:28

Horsemad - It was Electrical & electronic engineering - so why they think he might now want to do Chemistry, I don't know.
DS Chemistry teacher said that applications for Chemistry courses were low, they must just be desperate

Horsemad · 13/08/2015 14:08

seimum, what was your DS applying for originally at Soton?

cathyandclaire · 13/08/2015 14:00

Atia you have bought a tear to my eye with that bit of lovely news.
Thanks so much.

voilets · 13/08/2015 13:38

lovely to read all these messages.

We have first choice here and he reached grades required too. Haven't slept, been crying - feels so momentous!

He took a gap year for many reasons but grades last year were good but not high enough for his chosen course - this year he has exceeded expectations.

so any that don't have luck through clearing - a gap year: bit of work, travel and a retake can do wonders. Our DS is so much more mature and ready.

Been there slightly disappointed ( last year) and today feel elated. Our DC just have to keep going!

AtiaoftheJulii · 13/08/2015 13:34

cathy will have fingers crossed for a pleasant outcome of the remark x But I also (re)read yesterday on Bristol's site that they will guarantee accommodation for first years as long as they apply by 31 August - and I'm sure that all will be decided long before then x

ItsJustPaint · 13/08/2015 13:25

Agree with circular, my dd still got her firm despite dropping 2 grades.

Nottingham so a good option IMO.

Sorry some of you are still in limbo. Tis awful...

Waitingaround · 13/08/2015 13:19

Ds has just been rejected from Durham. So will go to York (I think)

circular · 13/08/2015 13:15

Hi all
Congrats to all those DC that made their offers, some brilliant results, Hope those going through clearing get sorted soon.
DD got her firm despite missing offer by 3 grades. Saw on the freshers page that some got into her course missing more. Quite astonishing for a Uk top 20 Uni, both overall and in her subject. Doesn't think that is any reflection on her course.
