I'm thinking of moving back to UK from HK within the next year and am searching for a state school/independent secondary school that teaches GCSE mandarin for my son who is now 13 (which is Year 8). Hopefully to find one in the surrey area as I have relatives living in Cheam (Surrey) area. I'm hoping to find one where he can take mandarin as an alternative to French/Spanish etc. So one less language to pick up as he will already have to speed up his English Language knowledge.

Whitgift in Croydon does Mandarin and Japanese as well as the usual.

If he is already at a high level most independent schools would let him sit it even if they don't teach it, especially if there are overseas boarders. Iirc Whitgift have it as compulsory in younger years.

Bohunt, in Liphook on the East Hampshire/West Sussex boarder does. It's also got a fantastic reputation.

I know of at least 2 in our patch of SE London, but too far for you from Cheam.

It is quite mainstream, but if he already speaks it what is the point? He can take the exam in year 11, in any school without attending any lessons, and spend the time on something else more worthwhile, like English

Hampton school for boys and Kingston grammar school. Both are excellent , very academic schools.
