Do I actually know Slough? I don’t know how old you are, CharlesRyder but if you’re under 40 years old, then I will tell you I’ve lived and worked in Slough even before you're born!

peteneras · 01/01/2015 19:10

Don't they also have a huge Sainsbury's in Slough too? Just another big company that sees the potential in Slough. And anyway, Slough isn't just the High Street. . . it is also the Trading Estate and all the big name world companies along the Bath Road.

CharlesRyder · 01/01/2015 19:10

peteneras do you actually know Slough or have you just driven down the A4? It has huge social problems that building a 'feature' bus station can't plaster over.

Being next door to Windsor and Marlow neither negates nor solves the problems in Slough and a developing reputation for being 'trendy' as young commuters move to the crossrail stations is not necessarily going to help.

The infrastructure in Slough is in disarray at the moment and, although there are some great projects going on, like the re-generation of the Britwell, and pockets of really good practise in education/ health/ social care etc there is still a huge amount of work to be done there before it is a place were all residents are safe and have a good standard of living.

morethanpotatoprints · 01/01/2015 19:06

Are these all state schools then?
It should read socially selective state schools?

littleducks · 01/01/2015 19:03

Anyway I don't think Tesco targets "up and coming" areas for large supermarkets to be honest. They just want somewhere with a chance of getting planning permission. They wanted a monopoly over the town when they built the big shop buying up and then trying to keep the rival supermarket site in town.

I disagree that Slough is improving. Even if we stick to shopping the high street is run done with fewer decent chain shops than 15 years ago. Its all discount stores now.

morethanpotatoprints · 01/01/2015 19:00

Maharishi school is on here well I never did.
Good luck to anybody planning on going here. Grin

Still looking for the school dd hopes to attend, it will probably be near the bottom.

littleducks · 01/01/2015 18:56

Isn't it overpopulated but with a huge number of invisible illegal/unrecorded people though. Didn't Slough council themselves campaign that the census figures etc were all wrong as the town produces far more sewage than wound be possible with that population?

peteneras · 01/01/2015 18:53

For that matter, the housing situation in the whole of the UK is at crisis point. Just ask all the local councils.

sleeplessbunny · 01/01/2015 18:49

I am pretty shocked by this tbh, perhaps I am the only one? I went to a school on this list, albeit 20+ yrs ago, and I had friends from all social groups. Not sure if FSM were a thing back then, but the school was in a desperate state and didn't even have a proper canteen. I can think of only a couple in my cohort who had come from a private school, and far more who came from pretty rough parts of town. The school was always highly regarded for academic performance but not a lot nothing else. Have things really changed that much in 20 yrs?

peteneras · 01/01/2015 18:44

The population of Slough is only 120,000. I don't call that densely populated, never mind incredibly densely poplated.

CharlesRyder · 01/01/2015 18:41

Tell me, littleducks, why would the world’s third largest retailer, Tesco, build one of its biggest superstores in, of all places, Slough?

Because it's incredibly densely populated, partly due to a very high proportion of houses of multiple occupancy?

smokepole · 01/01/2015 18:40

I have just written an essay about Supermarket Power Tesco Towns for my OU level 1 Social Science DD102 !.

Tell me, littleducks, why would the world’s third largest retailer, Tesco, build one of its biggest superstores in, of all places, Slough? Clearly, the grocery giant don’t see Slough as a dump, a run down, ugly and depressing place as you and some others have implied. No, a large supermarket cannot make up for a range of social problems, that’s not its business to do that; instead, it and many other world-class companies see Slough as a up and coming trendy town with huge potential in the 21st century. [See link above]

As regards deprived areas and drug problem, may I suggest London, Paris and New York, to name but a few world cities, all have deprived areas and drug problems. And yes, handcream I am mightily impressed how Slough has turned around in the last 30 or so years to (re)develop itself. You can’t say that for many other British cities or towns.

smokepole · 01/01/2015 18:28

Kent Dept Of Education Characteristics. It says on the Kent Comparison the Number of Pupils eligible for FSM in the last 6 years @
Cranbrook = 5 pupils .

I'm sorry, Slough is a dive. I just moved away in the summer having lived there and worked in a Slough school for 6 years.

People from Windsor and the Chalfonts etc use St Bernards so I'm sure they do not represent their local area!

I would have said that some of the other Slough grammars do though, to a greater extent anyway.

PS
This set
www.education.gov.uk/cgi-bin/schools/performance/group.pl?qtype=NAT&superview=sec&view=aat&set=5&tab=71&no=999&sort=ks4_13.ptfsmcla&ord=desc
are Secondary Moderns : so by definition each of them is near to one of the selectives on the other list ....the FSM is subtly different

TalkinPeace · 01/01/2015 18:14

I just flicked around with the DFE tables - on my link
I cannot see where smokepole gets the 5 pupils at Cranbrook from : its 2, 2 and 3 as per the link
Tonbridge is much worse

notonyourninny · 01/01/2015 18:13

My dd goes to one on that list, seems like 90% plus were educated at feeing paying schools until went there not dd. Also most of her friends live in big to huge houses and go on far flung holidays often.

lljkk · 01/01/2015 18:09

Smokepole: you chose the schools on the basis of those with lowest FSM, did you not say that? So that makes the most socially exclusive, regardless of whether they are in any way selective.

Say if I misunderstood how you made that list.

TalkinPeace · 01/01/2015 18:03

Here y'all go

Every selective secondary school in the country, sorted by % of pupils getting FSM in 2013
www.education.gov.uk/cgi-bin/schools/performance/group.pl?qtype=NAT&superview=sec&view=aat&set=5&tab=71&no=999&sort=ks4_13.ptfsmcla&ord=asc

Tykeisagirl · 01/01/2015 17:58

Some of the FSM statistics are also dependent on the area. Two of those schools are a five minute walk from where I'm sitting right now. My DD is in primary a short distance away from them and her school has 5% FSM, it's not unreasonable that a school which is being fed from primarys with a low amount of pupils on FSM would have no children on FSM.

poisonedbypen · 01/01/2015 17:47

There are 13 grammars in Bucks. If I have counted correctly 4 are on the list

smokepole · 01/01/2015 17:45

Danny. Reading Girls School has/had 261 pupils ,Prospect high school 437 entitled to FSM over the last six years. These figures are in total contrast to their neighbours Kendrick having 12 and Reading school 9 entitled pupils in the same time span.

Iljkk. The title of the thread is most "Socially Selective Schools" It just happens that with the exception of Anglo European in Bishop's Stortford they happen to be grammar schools. The most socially selective comprehensive I could find was Gordon's school in Woking with 35 pupils.

CastlesInTheSand · 01/01/2015 17:40

This list is interesting.

It seems that almost all the bucks grammars feature on it. Yet bucks is a fully selective county. You sit the 11+ in school.

And in bucks lots of people don't have tutoring. The grammars take the top 30% and a pass mark guarantees you a place.

So why so few FSM?

Is the whole of bucks really that affluent?
