How much homework in Year 7?

I'm just wondering how much homework your Y7s get/got? Do they get homework every lesson/subject? How long are they expected to spend on each piece?

Well, DD2 came home with three lots today - but none due next day. She had 50 pages of reading yesterday, did it, only to be told that the book has now been changed because Yr9 need it (it was The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and she was really getting into it, so am now getting it out of the library for her).

My dc's school have very relaxed attitude to homework, one in y8 and the other just gone into sixth form. I had concerns over lack of homework but this did not stop dd from getting really good gcses in all 11 subjects. However, i do wish more work had been set on a regular basis because it was a struggle to get my dd, who wanted the good grades, to go from no work after school to doing a couple of hours a night to study for exams.

ds has 13 30 min homeworks a week. The school are also super keen on extra-curricular activities and from Sat to Mon he spent 10 hours on rugby related activities. Not quite sure where they think all of the time comes from.

You'll probably find it comes out slowly during the first couple of weeks in the term and then it's all systems go. If you know she's going to be busy seeing friends a couple of evenings and then there's things you want to do as a family one weekend, it's worth pointing out she won't have much free time to catch up at the weekend, just so she knows there are evenings when maybe 2-3 hours are needed. It's a bit of a shock to start with and the first term of the year always seems worse for us, but does work out.

JustAShopGirl · 10/09/2014 11:06

Ours varies - but said to expect about 6 hours per subject per half term - some subjects will use it all at once (History project for instance) some will set half an hour to an hour per week.

My girls have never seemed overrun by homework - but others often get given stuff that has not been completed in class - when luckily mine have already done it.

CrabbyTheCrabster · 10/09/2014 00:15

Wow starfish that's a lot of studying. She deserves her good grades!

My daughter is in Year 9 and since Year 7 she has generally spent 1.5 hours night and often a morning or afternoon at weekends. Personally I think she spends too much time on research but in return she does get excellent marks and I think this then reflects on her overall work. I think at the start they feel the pressure to prove themselves and also to keep up with their peers, so the first term felt like the worst.

I think if it's weekly homework then 30-45 mins for each subject. Some school do independent learning tasks which gives them a whole term to complete the work and I think my daughter's school said to allow approx 6 hours.

Well she didn't get geography and history homework today, so maybe it won't be every week. Smile

Officially 3 x 30 min a night but never for next day.
Reality last year was less than this.

However proper revision before exam week in May was expected for a month or so.

DD has it comparatively lightly at the mo, as she's only studying in the mornings anyway so can do her homework in the afternoons. Just wondering what to expect I guess. First week has been a steep learning curve. Smile

We found the homework set started as quite a bit at the start of term and tailed off toward the end of each term quite considerably.

pointythings · 06/09/2014 20:14

DD1 had a total of a couple of hours a week in Yr 7 and 8 and she's done very well. I don't necessarily equate lots of homework with a school being good.

comfycushion · 06/09/2014 11:40

It depends on school and the teacher.... my son never spent more than half an hour a couple times a week in year 7. Even then sometimes it was only to finish a piece he had started in class...... and grades are very good. Every school is different I do not understand some comments dictating that every school is the same.

BackforGood · 06/09/2014 00:35

Well, yes - the answer here would change if you were asking what was timetabled / stated when asked, or if you want to know what they actually do.

17leftfeet · 05/09/2014 22:57

I never saw dd1 do any homework in yr 7

I know she did it as she never got any negative comments and all her reports were glowing but she did it in secret!

TheFirstOfHerName · 05/09/2014 22:47

DS2 was in Y7 last year. He had about half an hour per night, plus a longer task (2-3 hours) every couple of weeks. This is about a third of the amount quoted in the school's Y7 handbook.

reup · 05/09/2014 22:40

Mine hasn't be given any timings. He has 2 subjects each night except one night with 3 and one night with one. I don't think any asre for the next day- well maybe maths. He has had some every day- its been v easy but he's still moaning!

CrabbyTheCrabster · 05/09/2014 22:01

Thanks for the replies. Blimey an hour to an hour and a half of homework seems such a lot for an 11 year old! Sad

DS should get either 2 or 3 half hour homeworks every weekday, so 1 or 1.5 hours every day. He started Wednesday, but there were no normal classes that day, he has 4 homeworks to do, 2 given Thursday and 2 today. He can't do homework Thursday as he has athletics club , so will have to do Thursdays at the weekend as well as today's. He has German, History, Science and Maths.

TeenAndTween · 05/09/2014 18:57

Our school says approx. 5hrs/week KS3, 10hrs/week KS4.
But appears randomly.
And it takes DD longer than that as she doesn't find schoolwork easy.

Best to do it as soon as you can if you put it off you can suddenly get a lot and not have time to do it all.

plumnc · 05/09/2014 18:06

about 1 1/2 hour per day here too.

GlaceCherries · 05/09/2014 17:57

We got given a homework timetable this week, the most my DD is scheduled is 1hr 45mins. Most other evenings, it's about 1hr 30mins. We'll see in the next few weeks whether it all pans out as the timetable says...

AChickenCalledKorma · 05/09/2014 16:59

DD1 is in year 8. Last year it was very variable - anywhere between none and a couple of hours. The first half term seemed to be the worst - I think they were trying to make a point. After than, things settled down a bit.

She usually gets several days to complete a task (rarely something set to be handed in the next day). If she planned really efficiently, I'm guessing it would be about 30mins per night, but she prefers the "all or nothing" approach Grin.

What did catch me out was the projects set to be completed during half terms. That was a first for us, and rather spoiled a week of rest and relaxation.
