Roisin · 19/03/2013 20:29

I am prompted by hearing about this school "The Academy day starts at 08.00, all students are expected to arrive by 07.50 and finish at 16.30" They also have a homework support club from 16.30-17.30

Please also include whether your school is an Academy, grammar, state, free, independent, etc.

8.40am - 3.05 pm The school I work at (Academy)
8.40am - 3.30 pm The school my children attend (state secondary)
8.00am - 4.30 pm Kings Science Academy, Bradford (Free School)

State secondary - 8.45-3.00 - 5hrs of teaching
Independent school - 8.30-4.00

NewFerry · 20/03/2013 20:39

8:50 - 3:30pm state comp, 5 hours teaching, but lunch break doesn't start till 1:40pm. Then just 1 lesson in the afternoon.

Then the usual after school clubs for those who want to take part, and library open till 5pm for homework.

ItsRainingOutside · 20/03/2013 19:24

Independent.
08.20 - 16.00 plus 90 minutes of extra-curricular and Saturday mornings until 1pm or all day if there are matches.

Polgara2 · 20/03/2013 07:26

Roisin · 20/03/2013 07:21

Blimey. How are the students' concentration levels for the last lesson of the day Ronaldo?

That's a long day for teachers and pupils alike.

8:30 - 5:00 - ( which means 8:20 - 5:15 for teachers+ after school meetings which usually means 6:00 pm finish - we changed this year . It has proved very unpopular with staff and pupils alike . Previously we have 8:50 -4:00and after school clubs ( that was 8:40 - 4: 00 for teachers and staff meetings were in school time not afterwards) but some stupid teachers complained about problems with kids not doing clubs but sitting around waiting for parents/ busses and hiding in corners and out of the way places avoiding the clubs and prep and they couldnt control the larger numbers who came toprep - we had one teacher each evening covering it) and so we now have activities in the middle of the morning ( rubbish - they still flop around and hide like secret agents to get out of it) and we all have to work until 5:00.

Bloody stupidity and it doesnt work anyway. All it does is allow mummy day care for about 5 parents. I am not a baby sitter.

Our local secondary schools do 8:30am-3:00pm or 8:45am-2:45pm.
They seem to be set up to allow older siblings to collect younger children from the local primary schools, although that may just be a convenient side effect.

State comp 8.50-3.00, very short lunchbreak so still 5 hours teaching

BooksandaCuppa · 19/03/2013 21:04

Ds: independent senior school - 8.40-4.00: 5hrs 15mins teaching (longer lunch and breaks).

I work: state grammar - 8.55-3.45: 5 hours teaching.

Marmitelover55 · 19/03/2013 20:52

My dd1 will be starting in september at a secondary girls academy that was formally a private school. I believe the school hours are 8.20-3.45, which seems a slightly longer day. I believe they have stuck with the old longer private school holidays though, so this must be to offset that.

forevergreek · 19/03/2013 20:51

My old school was state grammar, 8.25 - 4pm

TwllBach · 19/03/2013 20:49

... Foundation primary school.

TwllBach · 19/03/2013 20:49

The school bell goes at 9am but pupils are expected to be on the yard at 8.50 to line up for 8.55. School finishes at 3.30 and we have five hours five minutes teaching time. It's a foundation school.

sjupes · 19/03/2013 20:49

My high school was 8.55 to 3.40 i think. Just a council school.

Roisin · 19/03/2013 20:47

The Free School I mentioned in the OP apparently has 35 hrs lessons a week, instead of the standard 25!

Apparently they have 30 mins per day silent reading.

But they've just had a grade 3 (requires improvement) from Ofsted, who have criticised the length of the school day.

Hmm...
