what is expected at your school? Aibu to think that 1.5 hours a day is quite a lot at this age?

DS2 is in yr 7 and doesn't have anywhere near 1.5 hours a night! That's a lot imo.

maggotts · 05/10/2012 00:01

Supposed to be 3 x 20 mins. Some take more than 20 mins, some less. Not always set. Not too bad really at the moment. Seems to actually be max 1 hour. IME it ratcheted up in Year 8/9 when separate sciences and extra languages kicked in.

FarrowAndBollock · 03/10/2012 00:57

Too much Sad.

I think it was 11 pieces last week. It is meant to take 20 mins a piece, but some took more.

One took much more because the teacher asked them to research something, then took away the books they had written down the things they were meant to be researching. I was a bit fed up because I spent ages trying to find what DS was looking for on-line too, and failed. He did eventually find it, but had wasted hours by then.

He's top set and I think the lower sets get less.

DS is meant to get an hour and a half a night (3 subjects). He is taking much longer, 2 to 3 hours usually. Am hoping it will settle down when he realises everything doesn't have to be completely perfect and copied out into neat etc.

Startailoforangeandgold · 01/10/2012 21:09

30 minutes to an hour I guess. Odd longer bits at weekends.

It gets better, books only need covering once and PHSE posters and similar stuff tend to get done in break and on the bus.
I know better than to enquire too deeply.

Blimey, needsomesunshine - I went to a top stream academic school in the Netherlands (all secondary education is selective over there) and didn't have anything like that in Yr 7. Nor even in 6th form! And I got seriously good results.

needsomesunshine · 01/10/2012 19:24

My ds has just started grammar school. Spends about 2 hrs in the evening & all morning at weekends. Seems to be the norm.

pointythings · 01/10/2012 19:22

Well, I spoke too soon... DD is inundated at the moment, with a lot of things all due on the same day. Some big, some small - and I will be away for two nights so not able to nag supervise. DH is American and can't really help due to having learned just about everything completely differently, so we're having to get everything done today and tomorrow.

If this becomes a pattern, I may need to have a word - spread your deadlines out a bit, people!

On the plus side, DD has now realised that she must make a start on her homework independently when she comes home from school because otherwise she will not have an evening. The lesson has definitely sunk in!

lljkk · 01/10/2012 16:42

Rumour that local High School sets no more than 20min/night.

bubby64 · 01/10/2012 13:16

Dependant on which rota week it is (on a 2 week rotating schedual) 1-2 times a week 2 bits, 1-2 times=3 bits, 1-2 times=1bit, each time 30 minute a piece, so on 3 days a fornight they get the maximum 1hr30mins worth, the rest of the time 30mins-1hr a night, with one night a fortnight none at all (yellow thursdays, yahoo!)

MrsShrek3 · 01/10/2012 01:33

Ds has only had three pieces so far and a big family tree making piece for history due in at half term.

microcosmia · 01/10/2012 01:29

It varies but usually 1-1.5 hours but we've gotten off quite lightly at weekends so far DS usually finishes homework on Fri eve and that's it til Monday. No doubt that will all change after mid-term if not before.

pointythings · 21/09/2012 19:03

Nothing like this much so far, thank goodness! Not every night, and only about 45 mins worth for each day of the weekend. DD1 also has a big task, with a deadline of 2 weeks - I think this is good, teaches her to plan and prioritise.

On the whole I think homework is overrated.

hoodoo12345 · 21/09/2012 11:53

30 mins to a hour every night.

Knowsabitabouteducation · 18/09/2012 20:37

About 1 - 1.5 hours per night.

SomePeopleSayImBonkers · 18/09/2012 15:43

DS recently started Y7. School says should be 1 hour a night. So far he's only been given 3 lots of homework, with each taking about 30 mins....I guess they are breaking them in gently! Oh, they did say that they were only going to set homework in English and maths until half term.

singersgirl · 18/09/2012 15:41

2 bits of homework 3 days a week; 3 bits the other 2. Each supposed to take 30-40 mins. Two homeworks are always learning - languages. Maths is set once a week to cover both the week's homeworks.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/09/2012 13:30

dd started off as 1.5hours a day but it slowed down to a more realistic amount with the odd shocker of a task. So far she only seems to have had 1/2 hour to 1 hour in Year 8.

DogsCock · 18/09/2012 11:54

3 pieces of 30 mins each here.

Ladymuck · 18/09/2012 10:07

60-70 mins a night, with one night a week clear from homework (which is when sports fixtures happen).

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 18/09/2012 09:46

Not very much. DS has been doing the odd little bit here and there, and some at lunchtime at school in the library. I'm expecting it to start to trickle in.

Scoobyblue · 18/09/2012 09:46

Three lots of 25 mins so 1 hour and 15 mins total per night. So far, being done in less than the allocated time but there has been a lot of covering/decorating books so will see once the more academic homework kicks in.

bizzey · 18/09/2012 09:43

suppose to be 1 hour a night.....but ds faffs about quite a bit "needing breaks !" so starts at ..say 5.30 and finishes 7.30 ish ..only thing neede for next day so far is French...memorising new vocab..that he shouted out to me while having a bath !!!...numbers and alphabet

meditrina · 18/09/2012 09:32

Home works are meant to be 20-30 minutes each. There's a pile up one day when he gets set four of them, but most have to be done for the following lesson, not the next day, so it evens up a bit. They've not taken the full time so far (except one maths one) so it's been quite an easy ride. Wonder how long that will last.

sandyballs · 18/09/2012 09:31

I have two in year 7 and it has been quite a lot but not as much as that. They spent about 2 hours at the weekend on various bits, maths, art, covering books. During the week prob half an hour or so most nights, not all.
