am I alone in being very heartened that the alquaida operative is not being deported?

because we absolutely should not deport anyone under any circumstance who we know will be tortured.

a victory for justice and human rights today imo.

Actually Coolfonz, there is a large element of the security services that prefer that they stay here in the UK where they can at least have an element of control & further evidence gathering.

There is a very good reason why soem evidence is withheld - they don't choose to withohold evidence without first jumping through their own thousand hoops just to allow such a presentation to be made to the courts.

I don't think its dumbsnet at all - I believe the majority of posters here have a much better grasp of reality

MollieO · 18/05/2010 22:59

Sophable how likely is it that your average law abiding citizen would be put under a control order? Pretty damn unlikely. Why don't you ask the new Home Sec how many suspected terrorists are currently being monitored (not control orders). You will be gobsmacked at the answer and at how many terrorist acts are countered by the intelligence services. I don't have the up to date figures but when I did (direct from a meeting with the then Home Sec) it made me feel physically sick. The threat of terrorist action by those born and bred in this country but as anti-British as it is possible to be is a very real and live threat. Why do people want to encourage that is beyond me.

ChickensNeedOpposableThumb · 18/05/2010 22:58

Yeah, not really seeing this as a victory for human rights tbh. This person would, presumably, have been more than happy to murder innocent people for his cause. At that point, my consideration for him sort of...vacates.

longfingernailspaintedblue · 18/05/2010 22:56

I respect Shami Chakrabarti's position, and as an instinctive libertarian, welcome a lot that she does.

But when the liberties of two sets of people clash - the liberties of a foreign terrorist versus the liberties of the British populace - you have to make a choice. I choose the British people over foreign terrorists.

Heathcliffscathy · 18/05/2010 22:56

point being mrsruffalo that you could be placed under control order tomorrow for typing the wrong thing on mn, or sending an email that has trigger words in it...clearly if you are brown skinned that is even likelier.

they have done this to innocent people already. what makes you think you're immune?

There is a difference surely between sending a criminal home to their own country and sending them to a completely different country where you have arranged for them to be tortured.

This is the former and it seems perfectly reasonable to me.

I'm actually a bit shocked that people want to protect the nice Al-Qaeda man. Have any of you got a spare room as I understand that if he isn't deported he will need somewhere to live.

MollieO · 18/05/2010 22:54

Frankly I really don't care. Maybe they should go and live in the type of society they are keen to implement here. That might have the effect of making them change their views. Instead they have the opportunity to radicalise those around them. Why should I have to put up with that??

Heathcliffscathy · 18/05/2010 22:54

and it seems that there are a lot of people that think law and democracy are side issues for the smug.

i disagree.

you should thank your lucky stars she's out there fighting this corner...there but for the grace go you!

Er no, sophable, unless you believe everyone on this thread is planning an act of terrorism

I really had to laugh at the 'winning hearts and minds' argument- what world are you living in?
This decision has not made the potential terrorists respect us more- the opposite in fact
I think he should have been deported

moondog · 18/05/2010 22:54

She aint fighting for me Sophable.
Nor you.
Wait unti one of your nearest abnd dearest is blown to smithereens by someone who hides behind the self righteous skirts of Chakrabarti et al.

Greensleeves, are you unwell tonight?
Since when was someone disagreeing with another a sign of being stupid?
Aren't you all for 'human rights'? In that case, isn't it a human right to be 'fick' as you put it?

Alouiseg · 18/05/2010 22:53

Shami Chakrabarti is putting my life at risk by defending people who spend their time plotting to murder British Citizens.

Greensleeves, may you never experience a member of your family being attacked by an extremist.

Heathcliffscathy · 18/05/2010 22:53

coolfonz...it's a disgrace, but i'm still v happy that he isn't being deported, control orders are wronged up, but deportation to torture is worse imo.

OP posts:
Coolfonz · 18/05/2010 22:51

Unbelievable. Have any of you actually read anything about the case? On either side?

You are all embarrassing yourselves.

What has the guy been convicted of? Nothing. There was no evidence against these guys. There were 12 of them no? They already went to trial. Did you see that?

Mi5 are using "secret evidence" that they will not even show to the defence lawyers. But it isn't really "evidence" as no one knows what it is.

Imagine if that happened in Iran. The Revolutionary Guard having "secret evidence" in a trial. So the media follow a narrative already set out for them, there is no evidence these guys did anything. If there is "secret evidence" use it in a court of law.

And you all follow on from it, even the ones supporting the decision today haven't bothered to read anything about the case.

And now these guys, not all of whom are even part of this deportation trial, will be put under control orders, again with no evidence.

What is it about law and democracy you don't fucking get?

Fucking dumbsnet...jesus...

MollieO · 18/05/2010 22:50

As someone who has been directly affected by UK terrorism I would welcome their deportation. It would give our overstretched security services two less people to have to monitor. As far as I am concerned my human rights and that of my ds are important too. Their like have already had a go at leaving ds an orphan and I'd rather they didn't succeed.

Greensleeves · 18/05/2010 22:49

yep, you definitely sound a bit fick

We don't send people to be tortured or executed because we have reached a certain level of civilisation. This is important, IMO. And not negotiable.

Heathcliffscathy · 18/05/2010 22:48

sami chakrabati on this on newsnight right now...

OP posts:
longfingernailspaintedblue · 18/05/2010 22:46

No-one deserves to be tortured but we need not go out of our way to protect the huamn rights of foreign terrorists.

Pakistan is a democracy, albeit a borderline basketcase of one. The authorities cooperate with us on intelligence matters. We are happy to deport to America, which also has the death penalty, providing the authorities promise to waive it. We should do the same here.

Alouiseg · 18/05/2010 22:44

With you Mumblechum.

Shami Chakrabarti should stop defending these vile potential mass murderers too.

There is enough evidence to show that this person is a danger to the public.

moondog · 18/05/2010 22:44

God that Chakrabarti woman is so bloody smug.
She needs putting into a half Nelson and being frogmarched into a dark alley.

Some people deserve to be tortured.

Well, a bit.

anonandlikeit · 18/05/2010 22:36

Exactly Sophable, our society that we all strive to protect HE on the other hand has no regard for our society or our rule of law.

Our Society does have the right to be protected against terrorists & those linked with them
