One of the features of how the private sector responded to the recession was to reduce pay (as opposed to sending everyone home per previous recessions). I think that there is a positive social aspect to this. Of course you have to make some people redundant but that is not always the best solution.

yes, I did say that we were right to spend which is what Brown and darling did to help stop the depression but you have to pull back from spending when the recovery starts. So the current debate about when to make the cuts is well placed.

Keynes pointed out the long term waste of high unemployment.

What I would do now is to cut public sector pay by say 5 per cent rather than cut too deeply too soon. I think politicians need to show the public the sums and explain

tdiddy, i don't. but quite fancy it one day, i could be really shouty (actually i probably couldn't and would hate it but you know)...

i just can't bear thought of trawling through local politics for ages in order to build up to proper grown up job...also i have terrible misbegotten past AND hideous track record here!

sophable- yes, eco left makes sense but not traditional left. Young left makes sense as well IYWIM.
