I echo everything that's already been said on this thread. I think you are moral and honourable, and I'm sure that in years to come, you will be held up as a great leader in difficult times.

Take some time to enjoy family life and being a constituency MP before deciding on your next move.

Dear Mr Brown

Everyone above has been so eloquent and I can only endorse what they've said. You're a man of huge integrity, passion and commitment, and someone I've always felt was on the side of the poor, the weak and the vulnerable. At a time when politics seemed to be more about spin than anything else, you got on with the job and pushed through measures that actually made a difference to people's lives - I know, because I benefited from them. After the grim Thatcher years, I can't tell you how wonderful it was to discover that government could be a force for good. All the other politicians are lightweights compared to you. You will be remembered as the star of the Labour years.

The way the media has hounded you has been utterly shameful but I so respect the way you carried on regardless. Just remember, the best revenge is to live well - though I'm sure you're too high-minded to think about revenge.

Sarah Brown, I feel you deserve to be known as something other than a politician's wife but having said that, you've set a fantastic example. Definitely my fave.

I wish you and your family a wonderfully happy life away from all the media madness.

Oh, nearly forgot - Citizens UK speech: I'm going to make my children sit down and watch it every day until they're ready to go and change the world (come to think of it, me too).

So dignified and moral. So rare. So sad that you cannot stay around and do more good. You really cared because you understood. You could empathise because you had seen and experienced.

Integrity has been mentioned before but it seems such an elusive quality in politics these days. Why is it that those who have it never manage to stay around? Why is that? Don't they see it? Or are they all too concerned with 'self' to notice. History will be kind to you. You didn't deserve the hounding you received.

I know this is only Mumsnet at the end of the day, and is probably preposterous to think that GB would actually read this and it would matter, but I really hope that he and Sarah do actually read this.

They must get such a skewed idea of what the electorate is like at times. We are all normal people on this thread. I would hope that he would feel that we in some way represent a significant tranche of UK society who really does respect what he is like as a politician and sees that what he has achieved has been a success.

I am very upset to see him gone.

Thank you for the changes you brought that made Britain a far better place to bring up my children. I'm old enough to remember it being very different.

I'm so sad about how this has ended, and am angry about the right-wing media. History won't remember the horrible little trolls. Though perhaps this isn't the place for such musings.

I too would like to agree whole heartedly with what has been echoed by others here - you have been a fantastic PM - a great leader, a good man.

You led with integrity, passion and intelligence - directed by a wonderful, strong moral compass.

Your work as the Chancellor and PM and the policies and changes that have been implemented have supported my family endlessly in so many ways and for that I am eternally grateful.

Thank you for the time and the dedication you have shown in serving the public. My family have been lifted from poverty by you and your government. I was a single mother under the Tories, drowning in debt. Now in this recession even with my husband out of work we are keeping our heads above water and that's thanks to you.
Thank you for the Sure Start initiative, my three year old loves Messy Play on a Thursday. Thank you for the education fund that ensures my children don't go without school trips and afterschool clubs even though we are on benefits. Thank you for the winter fuel payments that saw us through the cold weather.
Thank you for your selflessness and your moral convictions. Thank you Mrs Brown and your DCs for sharing your husband with us and being so gracious in the face of such vitriol. Enjoy your life together.

If I was Mrs Brown I would be hugely relieved that you will no longer be subjected to the kind of abuse that you have experienced in recent times.
