I was reading about New Zealands switch to PR in the 90's - apparently the election is in two parts. You have the voting and then the negotiations, which can take weeks. But it is accepted as part of the system, people get used to it. Politicians are prepared to negotiate.

I know very little about the Milibands, shamefully. I have seen David on Question Time and I like the way that he talks, if that doesn't sound ridiculous. He is measured and calm, gets his point across without getting flustered or making personal comments.

This is the extent of my knowledge. I read the Ed webchat here, he came across well i thought. I would like to see Harman take the reins, but I keep reading everywhere that she doesn't want it.

This pains me to say, as a hardened leftie, but I am sick of the sight of Nick Clegg. I have suspected for a while that his appeal was highly tied up in his underdog status.

Are there formal transition arrangements?

DS2 now covered in spots, but quite happy watching Garfield. I have to work today so must wean myself off the news so please would some kind soul post on here if Something Happens?

Milibands - I like Ed. David pretty comprehensively sullied by the torture stuff I think. Ed's no hardcore socialist but seems definitely to be on the Old Labour side of New Labour (o the hairsplitting). I'd love HH but really think she would be electoral poison, unfortunately - all that unspeakable 'Harperson' bollocks.

Saw on the news a bit back that Mandy, Campbell etc have gone to have a meeting with Gordon about him stepping down in order to ease talks with the LibDems. This puts pressure on the Tories, Clegg to talk to Labour later today apparently.

Rant away, Justa. I have the same feelings. Why is it so awful? If we had PR then the parties would know in advance that there would be a high possibility of a coalition government and negotiate before the election. As happens in Germany.

There may be a bit of wrangling after the election, but generally everyone knows where the parties stand on particular issues and which parties are likely to get together.
