Who else joined the Labour Party today? Apparently 1000% increase in membership today...

I joined today. I'm a SAHM and it cost £19 for the year.

I rang up to join, and the woman I spoke to said there were 2000 new members last night after GB's speech.

It was never left enough for me, but I feel there's the opportunity now to build a fantastic party!

Been thinking about it for days and now I have. Am lifelong Labour voter but it never occurred to me to join, but now I've put my money where my mouth is. I grew up through the Thatcher years and remember so clearly 1997 and the hope, excitement and optimism there was - can't believe it's over. I feel it's time to nail colours to the mast!!

Have joined the Labour Party. It's only £11/month. Well worth it to support a political party that genuinely wants to lift families out of poverty.

The Labour Party really didn't get a drubbing though - Personally I don't think they deserved a drubbing either because they weren't bad. (I speak as one who lived through the previous administration which richly deserved to be removed by the end.) How interesting. Good Luck to them.

It would be much better to have actual numbers, because the same 1000% can equally mean 3 per day boosted to 33 for one day.

Lies, damn lies, and statistics (using % rather than actual figures is often more 'dramatic'!)

Very happy to see this thread - I joined on Friday! Always toyed with the idea before but wasn't 100% comfortable about Blair, more of a Brown supporter. Now I just feel ashamed it took me so long. And yes, you do definitely pay according to income, so hey, maybe there's a bit of socialism left in the old Labour dog yet.

Bloody hell, I paid over £80 to renew my membership a couple of months ago. I expected at least a badge. I joined the ANL a long time ago because it was a quid for life membership and I got a badge too.

Mind you, I've had emails from Mandy, Harriet Harman, David Blunkett and Douglas Alexander this week. Dh says they'll cease contact now it's all over. I don't believe him. I think they really do love me.

Membership fees are voluntary, but they give a guide based on your annual salary/income - you can pay as little as £1.63 if you want.

If you are a local government employee then there are certain jobs which are politically restricted. This prohibits you from certain types of political activity. Generally speaking, the most senior posts are politically restricted; Director-level types reporting to the Chief Executive. It is entirely possible to be a serving councillor of a local authority and work for a neighbouring authority.

I'm not sure about Civil Service restrictions, but I'm pretty sure that employment in local government or civil service posts won't bar you from joining a party.

Local government employees have to make an annual declaration of interests, activities etc which may conflict with their employment.

I'm interested in joining but have a few questions. Once I've finished uni I want a civil service or local govt job. Will I have to declare membership? Will it stop me from being able to join certain professions?

Membership is £39 a year? It's £10 for the Lib Dems.
