Why not liberate Scotland and then run with a conservative majority?

Since Scotland is so mad for independence and is not homogenous with England why not set them free and then the Conservatives will have their majority?

I don't want the Queen!
Ignore DrLoves. She's obviously not in her right mind. Temporary lapse of sanity.

OrmRenewed · 07/05/2010 19:20

I would have to move N of the border then.

TheCrackFox · 07/05/2010 19:19

Yes, it was but Edinburgh can't afford it so we are having classes of 30.

SNP promised classes of 18 which was always going to be a none starter - where were they going to put these extra classes and more importantly it couldn't be paid for.

JennyPiccolo · 07/05/2010 19:19

well, the problem with minority governments is that it's not that easy to keep promises as they don't have full control. It'll be interesting to see how quickly the electorate tire of this on a national scale.

You can have Gordon Brown and Tony Blair back if you want

what i like about the SNP is Nicola Sturgeon. She's very straight-talking, reasonable and rarely indulges in name-calling for political points. Also she's actually taken seriously as a woman in politics, which is a refreshing change from the 'Blair's Babes' crap i grew up with.

Think the SNP would be more popular with her at the helm, but i suppose that's besides the point of what we're talking about.

seb1 · 07/05/2010 19:17

Thecrackfox I thought legislation is to be introduced during Spring 2010 to limit P1 size to 25.

none of those things are english. How can highland cattle be from anywhere but the highlands? clue's in the name.

This is an absurd argument and i'm ashamed of myself for even pursuing it.

claig · 07/05/2010 19:15

If I were Scottish, I would vote Salmond, I've always found him top quality. But I don't know the ins and outs of it.

I've never given any of it much of a thought, but I must admit, this morning I was praying that the Scots and the Welsh wouldn't stop us English from kicking Labour out. When the Welsh kicked Lembit Opik out and the Tories won the seat, I was relieved. If they don't sort out a fair voting system that allows the party with the most votes to win, then inevitably people will start asking questions and resentment will rise.

drloves8 · 07/05/2010 19:14

well RIVEN she sort of is german... but direct line from james 1st ...so we claim her. bet queen would love it too... shed get to live in balmoral all the time !

TheCrackFox · 07/05/2010 19:12

I do think, however, that it is insane that England or at least English regions disn't get their won assembly.

FWIW I always think Labour were so keen on Scotland having devolution was so it could be kept as Labour's own personal fiefdom. They got a massive shock when SNP won the Scottish Parliament (albeit by a whopping majority of one).

The reason Labour did so well in the election on Thursday, in Scotland, is because a lot of Scots have noticed that the SNP are pretty much like all the other politicians - full of false promises and lies.

I live in Edinburgh and we do not get free School dinners and my DS2 is starting school in a confirmed class of 30 pupils.

Oh, and we do not have a reception year in Scotland. Children in Englnad tend to start school a year earlier than in Scotland which must costs millions. You also have SATS which cost about £300million to administer.

Earthstar · 07/05/2010 19:07

tartan stuff, seb1, I believe that tartan is actually english along with bagpipes and highland cattle

Cameron's already backtracked on it a bit though, saying that the tories have been insensitive to the wishes for Scottish independence, and that he would give it more consideration than in previous years.

I think it could go either way from the Tory end, but if we were to get a referendum now, the dissatisfaction at the unfair representation by the Tories would certainly swing the vote much further towards independence than before the election.

I think a proportional voting system would be much fairer too, but that it's a totally separate issue.

seb1 · 07/05/2010 19:04

If we kept the Queen what would there be for the tourists to see in England?

Saltire · 07/05/2010 19:03

Boris - I totally agree with you, I put up with some much racial abuse for being a Scot who lived in the south of England. I wasn't as lucky as just being called "jock" though.

It would all be much fairer if they gave us a proportional voting system. I think the current system is disenfranchising voters across the entire United Kingdom. Liberals are not fairly represented, and England itself may not be fairly represented. The Scots have their own assembly. The politicians will never allow us our own English parliament, because that would be the first step to English independence, and they don't want that. The Tories are probably the foremost proponents of the Union, even if it doesn't benefit them electorally.

seb1 · 07/05/2010 19:00

On devolved issues, thank god we are in charge of our own education system, wasn't it the Tories the encouraged parental choice of schools in England and that looks like (from the threads on here at least) the most almightly pile of piss ever dreamed up.

drloves8 · 07/05/2010 18:58
