Why have we been told to 'stockpile' and what for?

We have been advised by the government to stockpile for 3 days but I am not clear why? Is it weather conditions or interference from hostile states? Or is it a government ploy to distract us from the Budget which will containing huge tax rises for some ?

If it’s for drinking then water stored from the tap wouldn’t be suitable, bacteria would grow in it over time. Just use that for flushing the toilet.

You can replace it every now and again you know! Of course it's suitable.

A jug of water will last a couple of days at this time of year. Most regions would still have water in a powercut, it's not all pumped.

Everyone stop the histeria, we are not going to run out of food. There's plenty of water and food and running out is never going to happen.

If there was a nuclear war, which is very unlikely, having 500 hundred rolls of toilet paper, 400 litres of mineral water and a weeks supply of tinned tuna isn't going to do you much good.

The advice is simple, make sure you have a bit in the cupboard. A tin of tuna, a tin of beans and a jug of water....trust me that enough to keep you alive for a week in this country. You don't need a lot of food at all, most Brits would do well to stop eating for a week

You don't need to buy any kind of water. Surely you have some containers you could simply fill with tap water and store somewhere? Why do people have this idea that you must go and buy water???

The full paragraph of the partial quote you posted is:

“By 2030 their force strength and war economy could put them in a position to attack. That gives us a little over 1,000 days to complete our mission: to be ready with our allies to fight and win. This Government will make sure it is mission accomplished.”

Streeting was most definitely implying, if not outright stating, the likelihood of war in 1000 days. It wasn’t a statement about a standing military and general readiness for unforeseen events.

Why do we have the army, navy or RAF? We haven’t been at war for over 20 years.

Anybody that’s struggling to get a few extra bits but has prime, Morrisons at Amazon are doing £40 off £60 and I’ll attach the codes. I ordered mine this am and it works! I stocked up with extra cordial, uht, tinned bits, ritz and primula (😂) , mutti toms and passata, noodles, hot dogs and pasta.

What would be the point of being ready in 1000 days to fight a war if war wasn’t expected in 1000 days?

He said what I have quoted. Which is not that we will be at war within 1000 days.

How have you managed to twist that into him saying that there will be a war within 1000 days?

TBF he said that we need to be ready in 1000 days to fight a war, not that one will come in 1000 days. But the difference is immaterial. And he wrote it in his own words for a national newspaper.

Bit embarrassing for the PP who upbraided you!

The difference between being at war within 1000 days and an enemy state possibly being in a position to attack after 1000 days is immaterial??

I think the advice is aimed at people who don't store food at all and rely on Uber and Just Eat. Literally most of us have food for three days...

You and I would hope so, but some don’t.

I recall my cousin’s daughter going ape shite at the delivery man for not arriving before school started on a Monday morning because she didn’t have any bread to make sandwiches for the kids lunch’s. She was the one to book the time slot that he arrived within. Couldn’t tell her any different that she should have bought more (knowing she didn’t have any) on the previous Sunday… 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Honestly, I am really not sure most people on the planet are worth saving right now.

That's the spirit! You can be in charge of morale 🙄

I've always done this. I've experienced being cut off by snow, power cuts & floods at various times in my life so always have candles, torch, camping stove + spare gas, water, sterilised milk, tinned soup, baked beans & soup & so on. Anything can happen, We've just had the the first & not the last of the winter storms & many people are without power - that's enough to worry about let alone The Russians Are Coming! Although that's also not as unlikely as it was a few years ago. It's just trying to avoid being up the creek without a paddle.

I was a bit meh and dismissive about the whole thing until my sister put the wind up me earlier today.
Her house is like fort knox.she's been living in eastern europe until recently and has moved as the situation is very tense over there.
Wes Streeting says there will be war within 1000 days which is just over 2 and a half years away. Just as I retire...bloody typical.
I'm thinking of a firearms license. I ised to belong to a gun club. I think I'll go back.

Where did you buy your sardines from? I can’t seem to find any in Tesco or Sainsbury’s.

I bought some in Tesco today

@MarchingOnTogether yes they could both be off. So the advice is to have enough food you can eat cold. I bought tins of tuna, sweetcorn, sardines, nuts and dried fruit.

I always have food for weeks in the house too but what this has got me thinking about is what I would do if the electricity was off for several days, which would also affect water supply, as well as all my usual ways to cook and the fridge and freezer. So I’ve stocked up on gas for the camping stove, ambient food and water in bottles (which I’d never usually buy)

Thanks xx

Luckily we generally have plenty of tinned foods and snacks like crisps, breadsticks, crackers and loads of canned drinks and food in the fridge (although dunno how long it would last without electric).

Only thing I should probably add is some bottled water and maybe a couple of extra torches..

Hopefully wont ever come to it but better safe than sorry I guess x
