Some good news to start the week!
The mainstream media might be quiet about it, but the numbers donโ€™t lie: Reform UK just lost SIX by-elections in a single week.

Their momentum is officially hitting a wall. On Thursday, they failed to win across the UK and even lost the incumbent seats they were supposed to defend:

  • Amble Ward (Northumberland) โ€” LOST (Gained by Labour)
  • Hirst Ward (Northumberland) โ€” LOST (Reclaimed by Labour)
  • Claremont Ward (Blackpool) โ€” LOST (Held by Labour)
  • Long Whatton & Diseworth Ward (NW Leicestershire) โ€” LOST (Held by Conservatives)
  • Wick & East Caithness Ward (Highland) โ€” LOST (Stormed by Lib Dems)
  • Forth & Endrick Ward (Stirling) โ€” LOST (Held by Conservatives) about:blank 1, 2]

The right-wing vote is splitting down the middle, squeezing them out in low-turnout battles. Proof that real, local communities are seeing through the rhetoric.

Keep it up lads! ๐Ÿ™Œ

It's a full bingo card so far.

However some posters are determined to bring discount certain religions into it and stir up fascism and racial hatred. Edit: that's a poster that should never be made.

With added โ€œtheyโ€™re only saying what lots of ordinary people areโ€.

I don't think we had the 'look at the Tories'

I'm completely on board with deporting extremists. Let's start with Rupert Lowe, Stephen Yaxley-Lennon and all their mates.

Tommy-Ten-Names is the trash that took itself out.๐Ÿ˜

Following the Brexit result, that he campaigned for, he rushed out, got himself an EU passport and became an immigrant in Spain.๐Ÿ˜ฌ

We would lose our rights and left hoping we would get them back

We would also breach the GFA

What rights would we loose? The right for an Islamic terrorist to remain in the UK and not get deported because they claim to be gay/christian/ or not like the food in their country of origin?

Ah well, it's better we agree to disagree then.

No. You can't agree to disagree when something is factual. And the law is generally pretty factual! ๐Ÿคฃ

No we wouldnt lose our rights. Because our rights don't come from the ECHR. They ultimately come from the Human Rights Act and therefore Parliament. I don't want to patronise you and I don't expect you to know or understand the law but its been explained several times on this thread so I really think you should take that fact on board. Parliament is now the supreme law maker in the UK since we left the EU.

I think we shpuld be trying to change the ECHR personally rather than leaving. And I think we would have a lot of support from other European countries who have an immigration problem.

Indeed. And Iโ€™m just pointing out that we can change the way the ECHR applies in the UK without leaving it. The courts couldnโ€™t directly apply the convention before 2000, you had to go to Strasbourg for that. Iโ€™m saying we could usefully return to that position.

Theres no direct effect now.in the courts. We just chose to follow the ECHR but this can be changed by amending the HRA.

What would better happen is for the ECHR to be changed so that national governments can decide their own immigration laws. And for judges to stop making the dodgy judgments which is what has led to this problem in the first place. We need to get some better quality decision making.

But Parliament is supreme? Our rights come from Parliament. And international law doesn't really work unless countries agree to follow it (which is why Trump is such a disaster).

The GFA does not require us to be in the ECHR. If we left the ECHR what do you think might happen?

If we left the ECHR, what would this mean for ordinary people in the UK?

Leaving the ECHR would put everyoneโ€™s rights at risk. The ECtHR is a personโ€™s last resort for holding the state to account when it has abused their rights.

Without the protection of the Human Rights Act or the ECHR, the UK Government would have the power to do whatever it wants to individualsโ€™ rights with no threat of consequences.

Leaving the ECHR would also breach the Good Friday Agreement, which requires that the Convention be directly enforceable in Northern Ireland. This would threaten the peace settlement

All very solid points. But repealing the HRA wouldnโ€™t take the UK out of the ECHR. And we managed between 1951 and 2000 without the HRA.

I thought I would put it in a simplistic way.

I really don't think you should be suggesting you need to be "simplistic" to others when you clearly don't understand international law and the ECHR.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 18/10/2026 16:38

JuliaMaesa · 18/10/2026 16:35

The truth is more we lose access to a court to enforce those rights. Instead we will be allowing our own government to mark it's own homework instead.

It's like getting rid of consumer law, and saying that companies can sort out their own complaints themselves. Nothing could possibly go wrong with that.

No you wouldnโ€™t. Youโ€™d go to Strasbourg to seek an ECHR judgment. Weโ€™d still be in the ECHR without the HRA.
