Some good news to start the week!
The mainstream media might be quiet about it, but the numbers donโ€™t lie: Reform UK just lost SIX by-elections in a single week.

Their momentum is officially hitting a wall. On Thursday, they failed to win across the UK and even lost the incumbent seats they were supposed to defend:

  • Amble Ward (Northumberland) โ€” LOST (Gained by Labour)
  • Hirst Ward (Northumberland) โ€” LOST (Reclaimed by Labour)
  • Claremont Ward (Blackpool) โ€” LOST (Held by Labour)
  • Long Whatton & Diseworth Ward (NW Leicestershire) โ€” LOST (Held by Conservatives)
  • Wick & East Caithness Ward (Highland) โ€” LOST (Stormed by Lib Dems)
  • Forth & Endrick Ward (Stirling) โ€” LOST (Held by Conservatives) about:blank 1, 2]

The right-wing vote is splitting down the middle, squeezing them out in low-turnout battles. Proof that real, local communities are seeing through the rhetoric.

Keep it up lads! ๐Ÿ™Œ

Hardly. We just leave. Are the Irish and N Irish going to give up the peace and stability they've achieved over decades just because the UK left the ECHR? Of course not. The IRA are hardly going to employ barristers to argue that the UK really must stay in a convention.

As I said, they just need to wait.

They gave up peace and stability not long ago because right wing incitement encouraged them to wage war on immigrants.

That's a very reasonable description. I think it may be more helpful to think of extremist leaders in terms of cults of personality. MAGA, Kim Jong Un, Mao, Stalin, Bolsanaro, Milei, the Khamenei dynasty - they all fit that profile. And of course they're just as scary as the more obvious ones, like Jim Jones. When people start believing in someone and abandon rational thought and human decency in so doing, you're in trouble.

I suppose to be "far right" or "far left" you need to be following an ideology of sorts. I think Putin just wants power (he can't step down so he has to carry on otherwise he will just be killed) and money. Hes thought to be the richest man in the world. So he just does what it takes to maintain those two things.

Heโ€™s not far right. Thatโ€™s ridiculous. Heโ€™s all about โ€˜de-nazificationโ€™ in Ukraine, remember? One of his heroes is Yury Andropov.

Iโ€™d be willing to accept that heโ€™s possibly a sui generis dictator. But dictators arenโ€™t far right by definition.

Next youโ€™ll be saying that Pol Pot was a Tory.

Putin is far right. And he's proud to be. Happy to fund Reform UK leaders, such as Nathan Gill. Happy to commit terrorism in the UK with the poisoning

Oh loads think that! What about the alleged influence of Andrew Tate on boys? Or do we pick and chose whether young people are bigoted just to suit our own political agenda?

Young people have a myriad of views. Probably much more diverse than when we were young as they have the Internet now.

Just like loads of people say all the vile things Reform supporters are recorded saying in the ITV documentary? The only people influenced by Tate are incels, not young boys.

No there isn't and those so called legal experts can posit all the theories they want on their blogs, I've read them, but when it comes to the crunch, you won't see them for dust, because they will lose.

It's not workable. It would take longer than a generation to work out the basics to proceed. 25 years minimum. Sure what's the point of that?

Thereโ€™s plenty of expert opinion, including expert legal opinion, that says it doesnโ€™t.

It's probably not possible to pigeon hole him anyway. Its like Kim Jong Un. Elements of both extremes.

Pineneedlesincarpet · 18/10/2026 21:17

Well I might be keen on the police and MI5 knowing who did it. Just so they can try and prevent another attack.

Youโ€™d be dead. It wouldnโ€™t matter to you.

Yes Bond was MI6. MI5 are "MI5 not 9 to 5"

The Good Friday Agreement for starters depends on the ECHR.

Thereโ€™s plenty of expert opinion, including expert legal opinion, that says it doesnโ€™t.

Hes not far right. Hes running a kleptocracy. I will give you hes not running Russia on communist lines. But hes not really got a specific ideology as far as I can see. Hes just a criminal.

You answered a poster, in relation to leaving the ECHR:

If we had an extremist government though amd they wanted to get rid of our rights, presumably they would pull out of the ECHR or ignore it. Easy to do.

Thatโ€™s exactly what Badenoch is proposing.

Shortly after that you answered the same poster:

Yes. But they arent an extremist government obviously.
Your point was that the ECHR will prevent an extremist government removing all our rights. My point is that an extremist government if they wanted to remove all our rights would jist leave the ECHR or ignore it. Parliamentary sovereignty.
International law is not the source of our rights. Theres no direct effect of the ECHR regs. I think this is where people get confused.

Depends how you define extremism I suppose. Compared with the old school Tories of my youth the current iteration is definitely extremist.

It would be insincere for you to say that you didnโ€™t suggest that leaving the ECHR was the action of an extremist government. (Not that Badenoch is an extremist on any sensible view.)

The name is Bond, James Bond. Or was he MI6? Anyway he is a figment of someone's imagination and the books are now a multi billion film franchise.

Yes it does. We could go on for several threads now.

Withdrawal doesn't breach the GFA.

What do you think would happen if we left? The IRA would take up arms again just for that? Hardly. Thats not going to be pivotal to their cause of a united Ireland. They will get it far more quickly with Andy Burnhams push for devolution without a shot being fired.
