Greens adopt policy treating Zionism as racism

The Greens have formally adopted a policy which equates Zionism with racism, a move that will dismay the bulk of the party’s MPs and has alarmed some Jewish members.

In a vote on Sunday at the party’s annual conference in Brighton about whether to back a motion which calls for Zionism, the movement for a Jewish state, to be “treated as any other form of racism”, it passed by 1,022 votes to 813.

The motion, which is now formal policy for the Greens in England and Wales, also calls for a single Palestinian state in place of Israel “with equal rights for all”.

Four of the party’s five MPs have condemned the motion, as did Caroline Lucas, the former leader who was the Greens’ first MP.

Adrian Ramsay, who co-led the Greens before Polanski, said in a statement he would vote against it, as it set out what sort of Palestinian state should exist without taking into account the self-determination of Israelis and Palestinians.

Siân Berry, another of the MPs, made the same point.

Carla Denyer, the Bristol Central MP who was co-leader with Ramsay, said the wording “risks alienating a significant proportion of Jewish people, including those who vehemently disagree with the Israeli government”.

Another Green MP, Ellie Chowns, said the motion “risks fuelling division, and risks undermining the party’s ability to advocate effectively for justice and peace”.

Well they shouldn’t be wearing face coverings so we can name and shame the twats!

I’m hiding tomorrow. I refuse to go to work with the hate march past my window and I refuse to work from home as I’m too angry. I intend to curl up on my couch with my crocheting and watch ER reruns for hours. And hopefully stay off the internet but expect I’ll fail on that. I also am super scared this year - feels like something else is coming.

It shouldn't be like this for you, or anyone. That's shocking.

Don’t blame you at all. Sending a virtual hug and take care x

One of the things I'm struck by as I read this thread is how measured, how eloquent and how willing to listen to each other everyone here is. It's so unexpected (sadly) and so far from the usual spouting of vitriol and hatred that has been rife on MN in respect of any Israel/Jewish adjacent thread, especially over the last 3 years.
It is so very welcoming and refreshing; whilst we may all be from different walks of life, different parts of the world and a veritable melting pot of cultural/religious (or not) demographics, there is collective humanity and humility; a willingness to engage respectfully. Again I thank you x

I agree, it’s very refreshing. I steer clear of the Middle East section on here as it seems so unbalanced, seemingly any dissenting view gets shouted down with ‘genocide’!

Look after yourselves.

How are people feeling today? I feel such anger and trepidation. Because of where I work I expected a call out from our CEO confirming that our work is a safe space etc for Jewish colleagues. They’re very quick to act when it’s any other faith or race but I’m still waiting

I hope, that as with the (rather unexpected) reaction to the Green vote, normal people will see the planned marches tomorrow and be rightfully and vocally disgusted. Like, they'll connect the two rather than writing off the marches as some isolated extremists.

I really hope so. It really angers me that people are just now waking up, after years of talking over Jewish people and saying it's all fine. THIS IS WHAT IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN. If you've been chanting 'From the River to the Sea' - you have NO right to be surprised by this, or act like that's not what you have been supporting.

Let it rain all day in Central London. May the water sort out the great unwashed. The sun only shines on the righteous.

I cannot believe they are going ahead with the demo on today’s date.

There are 364 other days they could have chosen from.

But this date will hurt and upset people more. That's why.

The more they try to inflict hurt and pain, the more they poison themselves with their own hate. Love and light to a small and strong minority 🇮🇱💙

Seconded.
Tomorrow is going to feel particularly grim, knowing that there are so many people out gleefully 'protesting for Palestine'.

There is an elderly lady of my acquaintance who I spotted on a 'We stand with Palestine Action' a year or so ago. She's the kind of person who wants to do good in the world, so goodness knows what mental gymnastics she's doing to justify attacking policewomen with sledgehammers.

Mum and I saw a group of these wet, well meaning useful idiot people “protesting” in Bournemouth a year or so ago, they looked so very silly. One of them even had a beyond parody “queers for Palestine” type sign.

LuckyHazelFox · 07/10/2026 08:33

Love and light - one of my favourite snippets of posivity @toastcrusts ❤️ even more so profound on this date.

If it wasn't so tragic, that would make me laugh out loud. They really ought to find out what happens to gay people in Palestine.

I'm dreading tomorrow tbh. I'm reminded of that wanker wearing the number 7 Hamas Man U shirt in the aftermath. I'm getting tearful suddenly remembering the Bibas family.

That the march today is going ahead is truly sickening.

That the march today is going ahead is truly sickening.

Let them show themselves for what they are. They have no righteous cause, just the hate and ugliness of racist violence. Let today be a day of mourning and remembrance, and a reminder that we have the right to live safely and protect and defend ourselves. 💛

I truly hope that this thread has been of some comfort and reassurance to you and that despite the vociferous and baying mobs, there is a very strong pushback and revulsion by many, many non Jews too.

There has been a disproportionate amount of coverage by the media giving these repulsive individuals far more airtime than they should ever receive but I’m cautiously optimistic that this vote by the Greens is a step too far and many will now wake up and see what the true agenda of the party really is.

I also agree with so many others here that it has indeed been so refreshing to be able to discuss the whole issue objectively without being accused of racism, islamaphobia or “being complicit in genocide” - a selection of the very emotive mantras constantly thrown at anyone who doesn’t sign up to, or questions “the cause”
