When & how will Burnham’s honeymoon come to an end?

Burnham’s leadership has been relatively free of drama, so far, and certainly when compared to his hapless predecessor.

What do we think will represent Burnham’s first real test? The budget, or something else?

Sorry they do ask intellectually coherent question on policy? Are you saying they don’t or is it just because you disagree with what they ask? Contradictory insults? Did you say the same when Rayner called the PM at the time scum?

It is not the opposition’s job to work with the ruling government, it is their job to scrutinise performance, policies and legislation. Question their decisions and highlight any failures. Question public spending, state budgets, financial management. Also voice any concerns or grievances. Actually Kemi did offer to work cross party with Starmer on welfare reforms, which they did not take up.

Serious economists also argue that the welfare bill is too high and climbing. Remember the 2 child cap? When Starmer tried to pass/slash the welfare bill he had to do a U-turn. So why should it be pensioners, once again, targeted but not the general welfare bill?

Who exactly are the ‘team’ who are letting Kemi down? Maybe look at the front bench Burnham has chosen, Haigh, convicted fraudster, Rayner, resigned for breaching the ministerial code, Reynolds the solicitor, when not a solicitor!

So why on earth would the opposition party help promote a Government, that in two years, have managed to increase borrowings, reduce growth, increase unemployment, IFS identified £1bn a year yet to be funded in defence budget!

I hate mudslinging from any political party. I didn’t like Angela Raynor talking about Tory scum, and I was glad when she apologised. It absolutely is the opposition’s job to work constructively with the ruling government in the national interest, and in less divisive snd febrile times, consensus building across party lines was much more common. I do hope with Reform on the wane, we can find our way back to that kind of politics.

Who cares?
Until 'Airmiles' Andy has a General Election and gets a mandate, nothing is going to happen.
His "honeymoon" might be annulled sooner than he thinks as his association with Man Utd is looking "interesting" - https://www.dailymail.com/news/article-16198453/Labour-politicians-received-freebies-Manchester-City-United-Arab-Emirates.html

I have quoted -3 poll ‘once’ in all my posts this evening. So how have I kept going on? No need to suggest anything to me, thank you.

I wasn’t meaning just you, I was referring to all of you. Anyway, I’ll be watching with interest to see how the polls go the next few days.

Worrall20 · 13/10/2026 22:27

LizzieW1969 · 13/10/2026 22:15

No, it’s just that you keep going on about one poll, I’m just suggesting that it might make sense to see whether it’s a long-term trend or just a one off?

Not a big deal!

I think the honeymoon will be over when the budget is announced. At the moment, he reminds me of Boris Johnson- have your cake and eat it too! His preferences will then be revealed and it will be impossible to please everyone.

Worrall20 · 13/10/2026 22:10

Oh sorry we can only discuss what you think is appropriate? What a ridiculous comment! No not making a meal of it just stating facts! Upset has it?

You’re certainly making a meal out of one poll. Maybe best not to count your chickens?

Edited for typo.

Yes he will say whatever to stay relevant, however the electorate will get wise to him quickly, as shown with the -3 drop.

Plus he’s made a big deal about Brexit, after saying in Makerfield he knew it would cause division and as a democratic vote it should be kept, but moving on from the by-election to Labour conference it’s all Brexit again. And after that a -3 drop.

Do you think it’s the Brexit thing though and saying different things or the triple lock pension idea that has caused the 3% drop, or a combination of both.

It is only one poll that has shown the drop though so far. Let's see what the rest are like this week. Although the Reform drop to third place is very welcome!

TemperanceWest · 13/10/2026 21:55

Most of Farage's support is still amongst older generations, though @caringcarer

As of June 2026, the political party that 18-to-24-year-olds in Great Britain would be most likely to vote for was the Green Party, at 39 percent. Reform was the most popular party for the four oldest age groups, with 33.7 percent of 60-to-69-year-olds intending to vote for them, along with 33.2 percent of those aged 70 or over.

Yep! Course he did, real people pleaser Burnham😳

What does it mean then?

52% was a convincing majority according to Brexiteers, what is 60%?

The vote was all age ranges, more likely to vote leave if older.
How is more than 50% of that 52% likely to be unable to leave their chair.

Worrall20 · 13/10/2026 21:48

EasternStandard · 13/10/2026 21:35

I did too, still re-joining is another thing.

Perhaps Burnham should have used that you’re old too old to get out of your chair line in Makerfield. Oh hang on he lied there about Brexit.

Yep! Course he did, real people pleaser Burnham😳

BIossomtoes · 13/10/2026 21:46

I’m not remotely embarrassed. Why would I be?

Worrall20 · 13/10/2026 21:43

BIossomtoes · 13/10/2026 21:08

What is this, pedants’ corner? It was a throwaway comment. A lot of them are dead too, are you going to dispute that as well?

Please you are embarrassing yourself!

IsEveryUserNameBloodyTaken · 13/10/2026 21:43

LizzieW1969 · 13/10/2026 21:38

The original premise wasn’t wrong at all, though, that older voters were more likely to vote Leave. That was factual. And Blossomtoes said ‘most’, not ‘all’.

As she said, it was a throwaway comment, not nasty at all.

Yes older voters were more likely to vote leave.
But that is not what she said.
See her earlier comments.
Actually as others have said it was quite nasty.

Letsgonowthen · 13/10/2026 21:41

The honeymoon never started for me. I don't like how he came to power or much of what he's doing.

I do, however, want PMs who are allowed to finish their term of office. I'm trying to remain open-minded.

No need to co ordinate when people can see you are wrong.

Nigel Farage has over 1 1/2 million followers on Tik Tok. Do you think they are an old demographic or young people?
