When & how will Burnham’s honeymoon come to an end?

Burnham’s leadership has been relatively free of drama, so far, and certainly when compared to his hapless predecessor.

What do we think will represent Burnham’s first real test? The budget, or something else?

A combination of tax rises to fund more benefits for their supporters, fuel crise, increasing interest rates and a cold snap will do for him.

There aren’t going to be any of the first and the last three are beyond his control. Anything else?

Possibly. The ‘I get it’ post went down like a lead balloon after the chummy vibe ones.

But the public are not stupid, they fully understand that it is the war in Iran driving the fuel crisis, and with it interest rates. Of course they want a Prime Minister and a government to get a grip on the big issues and support them through a difficult winter, but at the moment, nothing that the opposition are saying has persuaded the public they’d be better at dealing with those issues.

I am interested in which news sources you get that from but suspect you won't tell me.

I didn't want to spoon feed you.

What does an arctic vortex have to do with Andy Burnham?

The obvious answer to when his honeymoon period will end, is when people will think there is a viable alternative, and at the moment I just don’t think most people think there is one. I know polls only tell you so much, but on “who would make best Prime Minister”, Andy Burnham is leading by 21 points. That’s really significant. I just don’t think his political opponents have found an attack line that resonates with the public, and TBH I think it would be better if they stopped trying and focussed on setting out a positive, pragmatic offer of their own.

8 per cent mortgage rates

What about them?

dustabsorber · 11/10/2026 13:00

Artic Vortex if it happens

hedgeknight · 11/10/2026 13:00

All depends where you dig.

I assume it is mud slinging otherwise you would post the daily growing evidence

It's a case of the more you dig, the more you find.

Then surely you’d share your findings, wouldn’t you? If you want to convince us.

Fair. I just looked to see what you mean, will see how that goes for him.

Dragonscaledaisy · 11/10/2026 12:48

BIossomtoes · 11/10/2026 12:27

Unlikely because it all happened before he became Mayor. Leese and Bernstein are going to take responsibility for this.

You know very well that's not the case.

Biscuitman99 · 11/10/2026 12:45

This Man City thing is no a matter for politics it is a matter for the premier league to deal with
the government should leave it as such

EasternStandard · 11/10/2026 12:44

Dragonscaledaisy · 11/10/2026 12:38

You can search online for your own evidence, if you so choose. I'm not wasting my time spoon feeding you.

You can't provide the information, that is fine. Just say so.

Can you give examples of this daily growing evidence?

In other words no, given the response you’ve got.

BIossomtoes · 11/10/2026 12:39

Dragonscaledaisy · 11/10/2026 12:30

Wishful thinking. There's plenty of evidence - growing daily - of Burnham's involvement in all manner of things.

It’s not wishful thinking, it’s fact. He wasn’t Mayor at the time in question. If anyone is thinking wishfully it’s you.

Manchester City charges are for the period 2009 -2018
Andy Burnham was Manchester Mayor 2017-2026
