As polls have tipped slightly in favour of Labour, will Andy Burnham call a general election before 2027? Kemi Badenoch thinks he might.

I’d be okay if it was not possible to call a general election within four years of being elected. Changing direction at regular short intervals is more likely to hinder, as opposed to improve, progress.

He doesn’t ever have to reconsider, he will cling on.

Calling a GE at the end of a five year term isn’t “clinging on”. It’s politics as it should be.

Yeah I knew he’d not take the risk too chicken shit. Too high a risk the public would boot them out. So not thank god for me,

I think people wouldn't welcome the alternative anyway. Who wants big business supporting con artists in the top job, funded by billionaires?

So, Burnham has answered the original question for us.

My initial thoughts are that it’s the correct decision. However, if there a tax increases in the next budget, he might have to reconsider.

And we believe him. Because politicians are always honest and never u-turn.

But I'm happy if he sticks with this. Less than 3 years to wait then

Freedom of movement? No, thanks.

Thezookeepersneice · 25/09/2026 18:13

I also think it’s the right decision. I’m glad he’s made a definite announcement. I hope it’ll mean we get a brief period at least with a bit more stability and some more thoughtful, pragmatic policy making rather than the more populist, knee jerk stuff you get in the run up to an election (from all parties TBF).

Not sure. I was a remainer to the core but the thought of going through wrangling plus the euro issue isn’t looking that enticing.

I'm the same. Not sure I'd vote to rejoin in a second referendum now.

nomoreforks · 25/09/2026 17:32

I don't think that there will be. People were not voting Labour last time, they were voting against the Tories. Now Labour are in and are (so far) pretty terrible , I don't think they will vote the same way. Not unless there are some pretty extraordinary developments. I think there will be some kind of coalition I think if there was a vote now.

And Starmer and Kwarteng, don't forget the men, it wasn't all on the women.

I hold Truss and Starmer responsible, they were the boss.

Binnyforthewin · 25/09/2026 16:35

Although with the performances of Truss and Reeves in recent years putting key parts of our economic policy into the hands of the ECB would be quite appealing!

It seems he’s ruled it out just now, again. So those who don’t have the appetite for political overload etc for a while can rest easy.

Good! I want Labour out and at least till the rest of my days.

But I'm less optimistic than you are. I'm a staunch Remainer. The middle class, SE/London home owners demographics tend to be Remainers and liberals as well.

So when faced a choice of a chance of joining EU vs yet another tax hit, this choice will be very difficult for many.
So I want you to be correct with your fcst, but let's see.

BIossomtoes · 25/09/2026 16:19

And Labour will lose a lot to reform.

Why? It might be wishful thinking but Reform appears to have peaked and tactical voting for “anyone but Reform” will be on steroids.

There isn’t too few of them and when they march they make their voices heard, home owners and older voters vote much more than younger people and renters. And Labour will lose a lot to reform.

id be very surprised if your prediction comes true, the polls right now say you’re wrong, and it’s unlikely to sway in favour of them.

We can’t just “rejoin next year” or in any particular year. We’d have to apply, be unanimously accepted and meet terms.

We have no idea whether all the EU countries would want us or what we’d have to do to join, or whether the country would accept those terms (like joining the Euro and being under the ECB for example).

I realise the government can theoretically take us back in without a referendum but in reality no government would do so if it thought it would be crucified in a GE afterwards, and the EU states wouldn’t want a reluctant or even back-out-again member.

This isn’t an anti-EU point of view - I voted remain - but a realistic one. If we’re ever to rejoin it will take many, many years and be a horrendous process both domestically and internationally.

It takes decades to join the EU and there will be at least one election cycle in between so the voters will get a say. We'd never get the veto or the rebate we had before back, and would almost certainly be required to join the Euro and met the economic conditions for doing that (which ironically would involved getting our national debt down).

nearlylovemyusername · 25/09/2026 16:02

He will.
He will declare tax reform in manifesto.

The issue is that majority of UK are net takers so will vote for this.

Review threads here a few months ago when there was speculation about replacing council tax with 0.48% property tax. Some of us were saying that studio flats in London will pay more than mansions with acres of land somewhere in e.g. Midlands - how cheerful people outside of SE were on these threads!

So Labour will get benefit street vote, bribe liberal lower middle class with EU promise. Then those higher earners who've been squeezed with income taxes for ages will now be hit by CGT and property taxes, but there are too few of them to make a difference in election. And Labour will get in for another five years and God help us.

ETA: my only hope is Zak getting in and AB being scared of left vote split, this might make him hold off

Think it would be foolish to call it, too risky. Labour should rejoin the EU next year and possibly the single currency. Not vote needed just get on with it and if Reform get in, they won't be able to cause any more damage.

Remember in two years Trump and his awful cabinet will be gone...that will change everything.

I don't think he will call it this year, I believe it's going to be 2027.

They need more time to work on manifesto.

So will offer to end triple lock, reform CGT to include property gains on death, wealth tax incl property (incl prime residence). So they will hit middle classes yet again, but will offer EU referendum or "much stronger cooperation" with EU to still capture liberal vote which will be badly affected by tax reforms. So people like me will have to chose between living something to their DCs and returning their EU access.

Tory will promise to abolish IHT and cut welfare.

LibDems are irrelevant, they will form coalition if Lab don't get outright majority.

I think there is too high a risk this year, so he won’t, predictions are they won’t take a majority and it could swing badly, I suspect he wants to though, but will shy away, thays unless he does something to get the public on side in the budget, and to do that, he needs to cut welfare and cut taxes, but he won’t do that, so no election this year

and by next year he will have even less chance, so I think they will wait till the last possible moment as it’s their last time in power for a generation.

nearlylovemyusername · 25/09/2026 16:02

Binnyforthewin · 25/09/2026 15:23

But he's have to come out with an actual plan on raising taxes in his manifesto? I'm not sure the press would let them get away with the "no taxes raises for ordinary workers" without asking a lot of questions on the loopholes again.

Anyway would people vote for more taxes for an even bigger welfare state?

He will.
