It would be difficult to claim an affront to democracy as it will be for the Clacton electorate to decide if there should be another by-election.

eta: the Clacton electorate is 79,785 so given the by-election results there should easily be the 10% needed for a recall petition.

I will start tnis by saying i detest Farage. But he's been very cunning here. He increased his number and share of votes even with these allegations hanging over him. If the Parliamentary committee find he is guilty of wrongdoing and suspend him after his constituents (whose interests they are supposedto represent) have shown their whole hearted support, it will play into the Farage victim narrative.He will be viewed as a martyr and suppprt for hin will surge. I hate him and everything he stands for but he had to be forced to come back, do his job and face the consequences of his corruption. Had he been voted out he’d have been able to blame the establishment for getting rid of him, but would have escaped the need to do any work and more importantly, would have escaped the standards enquiry. He needs to be made to face up to what he’s done for the first time.

This is not an issue which is likely to go away overnight. It’s also not one that Reform is going to be able (or willing) to fix, despite the sound bites.

I saw some polling for Clacton where they asked who residents would have voted for if the other parties had stood a candidate. Reform still won.
