Is Reform done for?

The last several recent national polls indicate that the election of Burnham as leader has seen Labour retake the lead and would probably form a minority government (or better) if an election was held tomorrow. Reform meanwhile is in the low 20s, while they’re were averaging low 30s just six months ago. Do you think it’s game over for Reform in terms of the next election? Is Burnham enough to secure the next election for Labour? Or could Reform claw it back still?

OK, if they are as guilty as you say are you looking forward to some arrests soon?
Keep me posted, because I haven't heard of any so far....

They didn't make a convicted fraudster deputy prime minister through did they!

So the prime minister can't have a holiday...how often did Bojo go away....or what about Farage and his parliament attendance.... sorry don't buy it

If your bench marks is Boris and Farage, then you'll be very easily pleased!

Reform, they have been routed by a positive campaign and they can't cope with the fact they they've been found out. Money laundering, links to Russian money, links to convicted fraudster. It's all coming home to roost. Absolute bunch of crooks and would have sold out every working person had they got close to power.

Lee Anderson arrested by the French immigration service for illegally entering France puts their naval plans to the reality check....they are an absolute shower if jokers and crooks.

Anyone can come up with good ideas. But there's a vacuum as to how he's going to pay for them. Until we get the latter, no one can possibly be "happy" about his spending ideas.

To be fair not everyone can come up with good ideas. Starmer couldn't. Burnham has been more effective in idea generation in two weeks than Starmer was in two years.

Fuck knows. We currently have a convicted fraudster as defacto Prime Minister, while Burnham pisses off on holiday after two weeks in the job, which must be a new governance low. The state of politics in the country is utterly depressing.

We had near to full employment from 1997 to 2010. Unemployment rates were at a record low.

Yes, but we had the Iraq War (that Blair led us into) that cost £8.6 billion.

You think that Burnham's plan for apprenticeships and a review of education is going to make the problem worse?

They're all too vague to know. T-levels didn't seem to make much impact so I'm not about TSCEs.

The £5k for parents holding back their children is a odd one as it seems to acknowledge that jobs are there but that kids aren't doing them because life is better on benefits so the classic Labour solution is given them more benefits.

Blair/Brown didn't do much to solve the problems either during their 13 years. These were problems long before 2010! They've been decades in the making.

I'm happy with the ideas the PM has put forward.

I'm happy with the ideas the PM has put forward.

But that isn't using your critical thinking is it ? That's just ducking my question.
So, how did your critical thinking help you arrive at that conclusion?

I never said I don't blame the "nanny state" which,incidentally, i don't consider a "baseless assumption"

So let's have a look at your critical thinking as to how the problem can be solved.

I'm all ears.....

Things are in place now to destroy reform as a political movement. I'm hoping for both Tice and Farage to be removed as MPs via the ongoing corruption investigation. Dirty money all linked to two individuals.... falling support across the board.

Maybe people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones...?

So you've changed your mind about it being the fault of the 'nanny state' and an overly generous welfare system? That's good to know. Once you rid yourself of these sort of baseless assumptions, you're well on the way to applying critical thinking to address the problem.

Well they were in power for the 14 years during which these problems began. A million young people with no work, education or training didn’t suddenly spring up like mushrooms in 2024. Nor did the shortage of prison places.

I think you have forgotten about Covid, which was a problem that no-one could have anticipated. Costs are estimated at £310 billion - £420billion

5128gap · 08/08/2026 12:11

Why would you think that Labour and its supporters want people to have a life on benefits? We all agree that it's better for people to be able to contribute to society.
Where we differ us in how to achieve this.
Luckily, the PM has some sensible plans around this.

5128gap · 08/08/2026 12:03

There are no jobs that are worth less than the minimum wage, hence its name.
Its not just about skill, its about labour. Labour has a value in our society which means you give it in exchange for pay. For all sorts of excellent reasons, we have decided to place a minimum value on labour. If you decide the value of labour at the bottom end is equivalent to benefit rates, then you inevitably push down the value of labour for workers at higher levels.

That is a choice to say that jobs that have an economic value less than minimum wage are not worthy of being done in the UK and should be done elsewhere. These roles clearly could exist.

People make decisions on what they are prepared to pay for what all the time.

How many more people would employ a domestic cleaner if they charged £10 an hour rather than £15, if that dropped to £7 even more would. The government has set the threshold that if you are prepared to pay £12 that is ok, if you aren't you can't employ a cleaner. Is it better for the £10 cleaner through she/he now doesn't have a job and has to claim benefits.

5128gap · 08/08/2026 12:11

Binnyforthewin · 08/08/2026 12:04

I would limit immigration - that would reduce the competition for the unemployed arse sitters who could then take up the low skilled jobs created by removing the minimum wage. I'm not really sure what facts you seem to think you have gotcha me with? I guess you're happy with an underclass of people destined for a life on benefits. I suppose at least they'll Labour.

Binnyforthewin · 08/08/2026 11:58

I think that is pretty insulting to many people in minimum wage jobs to be honest.

That's because you're confusing skill with labour. There are many jobs requiring the second that don't require the first. Its not insulting to acknowledge that certain roles don't require a skill set and can be done by most people. It doesn't mean the person doing the job is any less worthy or hard working.

Binnyforthewin · 08/08/2026 12:04

BIossomtoes · 08/08/2026 11:58

It’s not deflection. Facts can be so inconvenient sometimes, can’t they.
