Angela Rayner not returning her 17K severance payment

After a year out of gov Angela Rayner is back obviously and today saying she won’t return the 17K severance payment because she ‘will deliver again’ in government. Just seems so grubby.

Same for Liz Truss taking the PM pension after crashing the economy. Just so tone deaf. I’m sure there are loads of other examples and I don’t think they’re OK either.

I don’t want this Burnham government to appear to be one that just looks out for itself. That was terrible for us in the Boris Johnson era. We should obviously not be harbouring any corruption from those in office, but also I want politicians to do the right thing in office even where the law doesn’t absolutely force them to.

Do you judge Green and Labour men by the cost of what they wear? And Farage, given that he presents himself as a man of the people?

I believe Ms Rayner has acted with integrity and with a dedicated and exemplary commitment to public service. I consider, however, that her unfortunate failure to settle her SDLT liability at the correct level, coupled with the fact that this was established only following intensive public scrutiny, leads me to advise you that, in relation to this matter, she cannot be considered to have met the "highest possible standards of proper conduct" as envisaged by the Code. If you were made redundant by your company and received a pay off, went away and did something else for a year, then applied for a role in your old company and were successful, would you repay you redundancy payment @MissionCreep ?

The difference though is that she want made redundant. She was forced to resign.

Not necessarily so. I despise Ms Rayner because she kowtows to men at every turn, pushing the trans ideology and sucking up to muslim men, completely ignoring women's rights and voices. Although in fairness she has been a bit of a hypocrite, just like her ex-boss Starmer, accusing the Tories of greed and corruption.

Given she was critical of others who had not repaid it, she's being hypocritical here in my opinion. I think she's at least make an equivalent donation to charity, even if she doesn't return the money.

Part of government is being held accountable. Collective and individual ministerial responsibility exists for a reason. Labour don't get a free pass.

Jeez…is this where we are already? I could take or leave Raynor but she is contractually entitled to it. I bet you wouldn’t be paying it back if you had been paid severance by your company and a year later got re-employed by them?

God, this level of pressure and scrutiny and unrealistic expectations is exactly why no decent people ever want to work in government. There are tons of talented, smart, experienced, capable people who would be such an asset in parliament who will never even consider it because even doing something you’re allowed to do comes with an avalanche of crap.

I generally vote Labour but would rather she wasn't back in the Cabinet as I don't liker her. She seems to create drama and I think referring to the Tories as "scum" is not the way a serious politician should behave. I also feel rather patronised that we are supposed to celebrate her as a salt-of-the-earth proper-working-class type based on her accent and background rather than examining her character.

All that said, this isn't an issue.
