John Healey, who quit as Keir Starmer's defence secretary last month, has been pictured walking up Downing Street - is he about to be reinstated as Defence Secretary, I wonder.

Ed Miliband and Shabana Mahmood also photographed walking up Downing Street together - but we still don't which positions they will be given in Cabinet.

Why? She hasn’t exactly shone in her last position!

Held a number of positions in government and shadow and always well thought of. Thoughtful and clever - writes as well. A class act.

Streeting stood back to support Burnham. So surely he's got to get a look in, unless he's going to be shafted.

I assumed he would be given something good but no sign of him yet.

Personally, it was wasteful not to give Yvette Cooper the big job. Ticks every box.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has entered the house (no 10).

Placemarking!

mynameiscalypso · 20/07/2026 19:39

Streeting hasn’t been in yet so he’s not getting a good role.

Twiglets1 · 20/07/2026 19:39

Lucy Powell, the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and a key ally of Andy Burnham, has just arrived at No 10...

I think that’s one of the departments that really benefits from having a service background, like Dan Jarvis.

Yes good point.

It would be wasteful not to give Yvette cooper a big job - health? Who is going to get defence?

That would be disastrous if he does.

Why? And I don’t mean that in a shitty way just genuine curiosity!

Nobody in education likes Bridget P. Yvette Cooper would be much better.

I know but ... tbh nobody in Education ever likes the Education Minister no matter who they are.

Cooper to defence might be a good shout.

Might be time to replace Bridget.

She had good backing from Starmer which might be her problem. Let's see.

thestudio · 20/07/2026 19:35

mynameiscalypso · 20/07/2026 19:25

I like Rayner. I think she’d be good in the Health & Social Care role.

Agree this would be perfect, very strong impact but very boundaried, much harder for the Mail to frame her as the ideological mascot

Araminta1003 · 20/07/2026 19:35

So far, so good. Picking the right team is literally the recipe to success.

I'm genuinely cheered by John Healey as CE - it's bold but solid, which is a hard trick to pull off

Twiglets1 · 20/07/2026 19:33

BeardySchnauzer · 20/07/2026 19:27

I would say they were shaking hands rather than holding hands which sounds a little odd

If you look at the photo he is kind of holding her hand warmly rather than them shaking hands.

I hope she remains in the cabinet, though obviously in a different role.

I have working connections with her, through my public sector role - she is the utmost professional, very principled, does some great work (quietly) locally and is so smart, every detail considered.

it is very tough being challenged by her!

Whar about Education Secretary?
