and the poor gardener was actually asked to a welfare check - at least i think it was the gardener?

HoraceCope · 21/07/2026 18:18

just awful, i couldnt read about this earlier, could not face the news

WonderfulSmith · 21/07/2026 18:18

That poor woman. No one should have to suffer that. As was said upthread, she was a woman of deep faith, I hope it was comforting to her during those moments and I hope those who loved her find comfort too.

I read that some of her belongings (purse?) and hammer were found in his bins. Either he's the stupidest burglar ever or he wants to be found guilty for his own reasons.

What? He’s a sadistic evil murderer. He walked in and hammered her skull in. Yes he then robbed her, but he didn’t drive 6 hours to rob her, he drove six hours to murder her. And was then taking keep sakes or momentos of his crime. That’s why he asked for id or bank cards. That’s why he took her purse. That’s why he photographed it. It was a memento. Something he could look at to remind him of what he did,

he also clearly didn’t know there was a camera in her hallway. Recording his brutal attack.

Gengha · 21/07/2026 18:08

The news today is absolutely horrendous.

To travel all that way to batter an old lady to death. Wtf? I mean what the actual fuck?

allmylifedays · 21/07/2026 18:06

I just read the details and I can’t believe anyone could rejoice in such horrific evil.

I despair of a world which gets excited at the thought of violent death.

Yes, that's reported in the DM. The attack was all caught on the kitchen camera and he was also caught on camera parking on her driveway.

Apparently he walked into her kitchen hiding a hammer behind him and asked if she had any bank cards/ID.

It's a truly horrible crime and I hope the police get to the bottom of it.

That's just so horrific. Those last moments of her life must have been terrifying. It's terrible to think people actually rejoiced in her death.

Imaginary86 · 21/07/2026 17:59

Hit with a hammer 21 times 😢 so so sad

MaturingCheeseball · 21/07/2026 17:57

I hope this individual (or lawyers for him) don’t start playing the incapacity card. It may be insane to do such a thing, but also evil .

Additup · 21/07/2026 17:48

The DM also reports they found photos of her ID/cards on his phone which IMO sounds like he was possibly posting proof of his crime to someone.

TigTails · 21/07/2026 17:45

VodkaAndSoda · 21/07/2026 15:38

He was apparently only in there for 2 minutes so must have been really frenzied.

BBC News also says her gardener found her. I feel sorry for them as well - how can you unsee that?

You can’t, the poor gardener, and poor people who had to watch the video footage. Sickening.

An awful attack on an elderly female. RIP to Ann, it's so sad for her many friends and family and I feel horrified reading about the details of her final moments.

The news report today is odd, that he went in, asked if she had bank cards, battered hero death, rifled through her purse and left in under 2 mins. Makes it sound more like a burglary, but who drives that distance to burgle someone? Plus I assume he must have confessed to this as no other witness, so they wouldn’t know what he said unless he confessed 🤷🏻‍♀️

Like others, I reckon he wanted to make sure he had got her, and also to take proof. Sick, sick bastard.

corlan · 21/07/2026 17:23

Poor Anne. Never agreed with Anne on anything but I admired her. The news today is horrifying.

BEAchDays2 · 21/07/2026 17:23

@SadiraOfTyrThis isn’t the case for murder. Travelling criminals tend to do low level petty crimes before moving on. It’s impossible to slot someone travelling so far, going in with a weapon, a frenzied attack in two mins into that profile.

KittyWilkinson · 21/07/2026 17:23

What a horrific attack. That's the work of a very disturbed individual

murasaki · 21/07/2026 17:19

BEAchDays2 · 21/07/2026 17:16

My understanding was the attack was caught on camera in her house.

If that's the case it should be a slam dunk. And the question of motivation could impact the sentence.

It's such a horrendous thing to do to an old woman just eating her lunch. I abhor the views of several politicians but can't get my head round this at all.

Devonisheaven · 21/07/2026 17:18

JulietteHasAGun · 21/07/2026 17:04

I guess. But there’s a lot of places between Rotherham and some isolated Dartmoor hamlet.

Exactly, and it just so happens it was Ann Widecombe’s house he happened to stumble on, no one drives 300 or so miles to a Devon hamlet to steal a purse and then drive back again, it’s beyond ludicrous if anyone swallows that line.

JudgeTinder · 21/07/2026 17:18

I read that article and wondered if he took her ID and bank cards to prove to ‘someone’ that he’d been there. Like some kind of sick trophy. Which would make sense if there is some kind of group behind this. I also read that it was captured on camera in her home, hence they knew what was said and how long he was there.

Poor Ann, just unbearable to think what she must have gone through.

Burglars and robbers often operate a long way from where they live as it lessens the chances of being caught if no one knows them locally. We had crime sprees every year here in the winter - farm and gardening equipment stolen. We are in the SE and it turns out the gang was from Cumbria and would come down for two weeks every winter and then go home.

I guess. But there’s a lot of places between Rotherham and some isolated Dartmoor hamlet.

Did any of you know that Ann appeared in an opera at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden…

She played the Duchesse de Crackentorp in La Fille du Regiment in 2012. She didn’t sing but her role is crucial to the plot - a real pantomime performance. The photo in this article is priceless:

Thanks for that x
