Re the Mail article: all that's happened is that the suspect's neighbours decided to talk to the Mail. It's possible the Mail found out where the suspect lived and approached the neighbours, though also quite likely that a neighbour saw the police cars, helicopter etc and tipped off the Mail.

I imagine the police are quite cross given they've told people not to speculate and are keeping the suspect's identity private for the time being.

The Times and Telegraph simply copied the Mail article.

I don't think any of the three newspapers are themselves speculating, but they are publishing information that I imagine the police don't yet want in the public domain.

”The suspect drove 300 miles with a foot long stick” is speculating.

They’ve already written the story.

And even if the neighbours talked to the press, the press have no business publishing it.

They know full well about prejudicing a trial, which is what potentially could happen if too much information got out into the public domain.

From what I can gather of Ann and having known many women of her type I’d imagine she’d be very pro discussion about what happened. Being told to shut up by the police is not something I personally feel I need to respect, especially as they’re only recently out of special measures. Her closest relative I understand was a nephew any family commenting is pretty extended. Until I’m satisfied we’re being told the truth I won’t stop discussing.

While do agree broadly, I think it’s a bit early to be demanding ‘the truth’. They may not be clear yet, what the truth is.

When the three people were murdered in Nottingham, the news released was very scant. The city centre was effectively shut down, and everyone very worried and demanding to be told ‘what went on’. The emergency services will have taken a while to know. To find all of the scenes. To work out the order things happened in, and who was involved.

It would be really easy to assume this is x, and slowly realise that it’s actually something quite different.

Yes I agree but also feel public interest in the case which is mainly shown by comments and speculation puts pressure on the police and this is no bad thing. She didn’t have children to ensure justice is served. Even if there’s a small chance of a cover up etc I think it’s only right the case is kept high profile and the police under pressure. Obviously they won’t like this but I personally think it’s the right thing to do.

What on earth do you mean. Nothing is confirmed or denied AFAIK.

I doubt because she was their auntie rather than mum her family are feeling non plussed over if she gets justice for her murder. I read this earlier from an interview she once gave,

Assume she would also want there to be a chance of a fair trial, and people speculating on social media could prejudice that

Why do you think the police aren’t telling the truth? They are just not giving us the full details (which they are entitled to do whilst investigating a crime)

I think it was the wording of the post by the pp.
Sounded a bit as if sympathy should be given to him even if he was guilty of murder.

They will have had to drive him back down to Devon before questioning him I presume so probably not likely to be a charging decision for a couple of days.

The police apparently have no motive but “no evidence of political motive”. They seem keen to not find any evidence of a political motive.

Somebody has even put a photo of the suspect on a newspapers comments section. I didn't think that would be allowed.

I don't think that the police aren't telling the truth, I just don't think that they have any evidence to establish the motive yet.

Their only comment was that there is no evidence to suggest the motive was political.
So the motive could have been personal, political, religious, theft or quite frankly anything, but we won't know until the police establish the motive with evidence.

Really? Are you familiar with the Black Cab rapist case? Funnily enough the police handled it appallingly. Things improved after it became high profile.

Yes. His name was John Warboys. He was a serial rapist in London.

The horrible murder of Anne Widdecombe, in rural Devon has nothing in common with John Warboy's disgusting crimes.

Nobody is obliged to tell you anything.

Unless or until there is a trial with a guilty verdict, there is no 'truth' - there are only allegations.

What is said to be the CCTV of the alleged suspect leaving home that morning is out there now. I'm shocked that is allowed.

Oh ok. So it's political but they dont want people getting angry about it ?

How have the papers got hold of the CCTV footage?
