George Robertson and Michael Forsyth. Just checked their names.

nicepotoftea · 11/07/2026 12:41

Also, we don't just trust people with cars. We insist that people pass a test before driving, roads are extensively monitored and people can be banned from driving for various reasons.

Meanwhile, guns have not been banned in the UK.

Peony1985 · 09/07/2026 21:55

Clearly he meant one incident rather than death.

The point being that the twats that kill people do so with illegal guns.

Cars kill more people hence licensing having a test, insurance etc. Guns have legitimate uses and theres no reason why we trust people with one lethal object but not another.

If so, very odd that instead of explaining that he repeated 'yes, one murder'.

I think sometimes you have to accept that people mean what they actually say.

Yes this , John major was a supporter of the ban, i can't really remember anyone not supporting it. I am sure it was the tory government who put amendments to the firearm laws.

Edited

There were actually quite a lot of Tories who didn't. The legislation took so long for a reason. The amazing documentary, mentioned upthread, details this. The best bit, in terms of politicians is about the Scottish Tory and the Scottish Labour MP who campaigned together. I think the Tory was Forsyth. He worked so hard to bring his party round and spoke at conferences as dod the Labour man. They were bith tremendously traumatised by the event.

On Lowe, the fact he said 'up in Dunblane' airily also speaks volumes.

Imdunfer · 11/07/2026 12:18

Rupert Lowe is a dickhead.

Dunblane was an absolute tragedy.

But why is everyone talking about it as if it resulted in the banning of guns in the UK?

It resulted in the banning of pistols from being legally held under licence. Rifles and shotguns still fine. Long barrel pistols allowed. Crossbows didn't and still don't need a licence. Illegal guns are available everywhere.

It was a completely illogical kneejerk as a reaction to public opinion requiring politicians to be seen to "do something".

And just in case anyone missed it.

Rupert Lowe is a dickhead.

Dunblane was an absolute tragedy.

Compare UK gun death rates to the US. The information is a 10 second Google away.

Then come back here and admit how wrong you were.

In fairness I think most Tories supported the ban? I well remember John Major and Tony Blair going to Dunblane together after the massacre. What a contrast to the likes of Lowe and Farage.

It's cold comfort to the bereaved but I doubt the extreme right will ever gain a foothold in Scotland , especially in the light of these unforgivable comments.

Binnyforthewin · 10/07/2026 11:58

He's a horrible individual. I would hate for the UK to be like US where school shootings are just accepted as one of those risks of sending your kids to school.

SadiraOfTyr · 10/07/2026 11:36

SwedishEdith · 09/07/2026 22:27

I honestly don't understand the electoral logic in wanting to relax gun laws. The public already get annoyed about the level of knife crime. There is no public will to want owning a gun made easier. We've never been a gun owning culture so it's not even something you whip up cheap nostalgia about.

But, yes, he's a cunt.

There's a lot of money to be made in sucking up to the US right.

Poor old Rup won't have realised that US podcasts and youtube shows are also available in the UK. He's not the brightest spark.

The Tories did support the ban. The only reason that it was Labour policy was because the government changed before it could go through the Commons for a vote. Same as the NI peace agreement which Major started and Blair finished.

hahabahbag · 10/07/2026 11:33

Might have done the country a favour, nobody will take him seriously now. There’s two things that are not up for debate in the uk - the nhs and gun ownership, we disagree of much else but not these

noblegiraffe · 10/07/2026 11:16

No one British with even the slightest bit of a soul would refer to Dunblane as ‘one murder’ or even ‘one incident’ that his defenders think is any better. Any normal person would have corrected that description.

It was a slaughter of small children. If he had told Rogan it was our Sandy Hook he may have appreciated the horror that it was met with and an understanding of the response.

Which is why Lowe downplayed it to the suggestion of insignificance. Who does that about Dunblane? Not someone who loves our country and its people. We are proud of our response.

Clearly he meant one incident rather than death.

Clear as mud that was!

I don't know how anyone can defend him. And as for comparing cars to guns, well, I mean, I know that 50% of people are below average intelligence, but really?!?

Thechateau · 10/07/2026 10:39

He's a traitor to this country as is Garage, out to enrich themselves with no care for the consequences

Otherlands · 10/07/2026 10:17

I posted on the other thread which is running about the odious Rupert Lowe.

If anyone is reading this and isn’t familiar with the facts surrounding Dunblane, there is a documentary on BBC iPlayer Dunblane: How Britain banned handguns.
It was screened on the 30th anniversary of the shootings and murders - plural.

There were also many children admitted to hospital with gunshot wounds, who survived.

The Snowdrop Campaign which was founded by mothers affected by the tragedy, was characterised by their dignity, determination and strength of purpose.

As a result of their work, not only was the handgun ban introduced, but our schools were made safer in general in terms of access and security.

In the face of unimaginable and unprecedented tragedy, the Snowdop Campaign changed this country for the better.

There are no words to describe people who would seek to minimise the murder of 16 children and their teacher and the injuries of all the other children.

Rupert Lowe and his ilk are beneath contempt.

what a very odd choice of word for a dubious choice. Even more of a wally.

I’m not defending him at all - as I said upthread I think he is deliberately underplaying Dunblane to suit the narrative that Britain overreacted to “one murder” by bringing in gun restrictions.

In relation to pureblood being used to mean someone who didn’t have the covid vaccine, he didn’t coin that phrase. He’s a complete idiot for using it, and obviously anyone on the far right talking about the purity of blood is quite dog whistle-y. But it’s an internet “thing” for anti vaxxers to use the term pureblood.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/07/2026 09:44

SkirlingGirl · 10/07/2026 08:27

The Hungerford, Eskdale and Dunblane mass shootings were carried out with legally held guns.

Cars are necessary in modern society. Guns (apart from for farmers) absolutely aren't.

Don’t hope for facts and logic to influence someone who will defend this indefensible man.

Daddy had restrictions placed on his hobby, boo fucking hoo.

Anyone who uses a term like "pureblood" knows, precisely, which audience they're appealing to.

So you think it's okay for the deaths of multiple innocent children to be reduced to "one murder" because "clearly he meant one incident?" You think that manipulative use of language and that disrespect to the victims and their families is okay? Why?

For people who claim to be British patriots, it’s funny how they seem hellbent on americanising the country. Farage has held the same position for years now.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/jan/24/nigel-farage-uk-gun-control-laws-relaxed

https://www.thenational.scot/news/25954182.reform-nigel-farage-double-remarks-gun-laws-dunblane/

Him and Lowe are cut from the same cloth and with all this that is coming to light about Farage at the moment, I wouldn’t be surprised if the media move to promoting Lowe now because Farage is too much of a liability and they need a veneer of credibility from appearing more like balanced journalism.

Yes - they absolutely want the UK to be more like America. I'm betting they're all for private healthcare, fire-at-will no-rights employment where your employers practically own you, guns, hunting, no maternity leave etc. They'll claim it's all about 'fairness' and 'productivity' but it's all about ensuring the people on top (them and their mates) stay on top and get even more control.

Twiglets1 · 10/07/2026 08:30

What an arsehole.
