Nigel Farage is resigning as MP for Clacton, triggering a by-election in the constituency - which he will stand in.

He says he wants the people of Clacton to decide whether he is worthy of representing them - not the mainstream media who he feels constantly attack him personally as well as the party he represents.

So given the profile of Clacton its looks like the greatest chance of keeping Farage out will be a conservative candidate.

Yes. But. When everyone available is a twat - the one that is least twattish, tends to get elected.

Labour - awful
Conservatives - 14 years of awful
Green - woman hating suicidal empathy lovers
LD - Ha.

So exactly why would people not vote for him?

Because he's a lying, untrustworthy charlatan? I mean, he stood down his Brexit party MPs to help the Tories, filled his party with ex-Tories, and thinks the electorate (or a tiny part of it) should use the ballot box to 'send a message to the Establishment'.

What message? We don't like political leaders subjected to proper s rutiny?

The Establishment? He's been part of it his entire life!

Funny how he now wants the electorate to have a say when he's not asked or expected any of his ex-Tory MPs to hold a by-election when they defected.

Hypocritical charlatan.

Do I think many of the others are phenomenal politicians? No. Do I think he's better than the others? No, he's far worse.

Prick.

(I have nothing of substance to add to this discussion!)

Two wrongs etc.

Ok, well how about, say £5m vs £250k.

it's not unfathomable. He says things the majority of the country like, so he gets on telly. You may not like him. Great. but it's not unfathomable at all, thats you in your echo chamber

“The majority of the Country likes”? Dream on!

SwedishEdith · 07/07/2026 15:08

Surely it should be easy to stand one anti-corruption candidate up against him. Maybe he hopes to lose because he sure as hell hates doing the actual job of being an MP. Being a PM, with the even more relentless scrutiny than he gets now, would be excruciating for him. He needs to be a permanent victim. That's all he's got.

Is anyone in Clacton? How do people there really feel?

Are they still pleased they voted for him or have they been disapppointed by his lack of visibility the consituency?

How have they responded to the £5m thing? Poor victimised Nigel or is there outrage that he only agreed to stand there after receiving this foreign money?

Have the other parties gained any popularity since the last election? Clacton has always leaned right, are the Conservatives more appealing now?

How do they feel about him stepping down before finishing the term, and the costs and resources involved with that?

Will he win?!

The polling will be known won’t it, someone put it below

ImImmortalNowBabyDoll · 07/07/2026 15:07

You can't mandate away an investigation. People don't get to vote on whether another person should face legal proceedings for breaking the law. Resigning from his own job only to apply for it again is just typical Reform histrionics.

In theory, but this isn't his first outing at the resignation rodeo (resigned from UKIP, resigned from Brexit party). He is the unflushable turd, he wasn't an MP for years and yet he still had an unfathomable amount of airtime and influence.

AristotlesTrousers · 07/07/2026 15:06

A pipe dream, I know, but I SO WISH somebody would discover some legally binding reason that would rule him out of the race!

AvogadrosNumber · 07/07/2026 15:05

Twiglets1 · 07/07/2026 14:56

meh - so what if he calls it an establishment conspiracy. He will no longer be even an MP at that stage so it wouldn't really matter what he thinks.

What about the Manchester mayoral election?

That wasn’t necessary and nor is the cost.

Two wrongs etc.

Burnham has caused 2 elections. How is that different

it's not and there is a very good chance he will cause a general election costing quite a lot more

oh and drive the country into a ditch

Yes according to AI a UK Parliamentary by-election in is estimated to cost around £230,000 to £250,000.

Please people of Clacton vote for someone else- just do some proper research. A starting point is to ask AI to please list all the times Farage has behaved inappropriately, and the sums of money involved on each occasion.

Yes, there could be TWO by-elections in Clacton. At least half a million staffed up the wall. Yet some on here think he'd be good on the economy...

It wasn't strictly necessary but you could say Labour wanted a new leader and what happened was the quickest way they could get the leader they apparently wanted.

They seem to think Burnham will give them a shot at winning the next GE but time will tell on that score if he proves to be more or less popular then Starmer.

It does seem like more money the country can ill afford.

Though tbh I will be interested in the Clacton result and if they do vote him in again, that will give him more of a mandate to carry on.

Imagine the Conservative party in particular will throw everything at defeating him in this by election.

If he wins, there'll be no living with the smugness.

I think he'll put in a bit of effort, turn on the charm and spout a lot of rhetoric about how the Establishment (the one that he's part of) is out to get him. There's a good chance he'll win as unfortunately the percentage of the population that will turn out to vote will be the same as the last time as d who believe anything they're told.

Compared to Burnham - yes. You may tell me why Burnham is going to be better on the economy, of course.

Have I got it right - if he wins and so the Parliamentary investigation into his non- disclosures re-starts and if he’s sanctioned to over a 14 day suspension then that can trigger a by-election - depending on his constituents - so there could then be another by-election quickly - which he could stand in again?

This is true. All the AB shenanigans is also costing a lot of money with 2 extra elections

MargoLivebetter · 07/07/2026 14:59

I just posted on the other thread, what a slippery move this was by Farage.

"I have found the relevant paragraph in the Procedural Protocol of the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner:

  1. If Parliament is dissolved or the Member otherwise ceases to be a Member while an investigation is in progress, the Commissioner will suspend their investigation until the Member is re-elected. If the Member is not returned to Parliament, the Commissioner will decide if it is appropriate and proportionate to resume their investigation.

So, a very cunning move by Farage to call the by-election before the outcome of the investigation!!!! The investigation has to be suspended so the by-election takes place without the results."

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 07/07/2026 14:59

quite capable of forcing a general election after that..

Absolute bollocks.
