Erasmus is a small step, Labour should go a lot further imo.

@DuncinToffee , If you are a class warrior, then there maybe some support for your view. But I am not, and in my personal opinion, the labour view is against the best interest of society, which should ideally make the best use of talent: IMO, labour is failing this test.

I don't think it was either Rwanda, PS VAT or Erasmus that ousted him.

We knew that it was ideological rather than to raise money, but now that's another competition for that £500million you want to spend on Erasmus. That's what it will cost the state if another 3% of private school students move to state school (which seems inevitable, given the move over the last 2 years).

Is that 'benefit' of weakening private education what you want to spend the £500million on? Or do you prefer the apprenticeships? Or Erasmus?

VAT on education was damaging and pointless. Thankfully the leader who introduced it and scrapped Rwanda is out.

And as you can see from Denmark's recent migration history, which would likely have significantly reduced the 'pull factor' to economic chancers if Starmer hadn't childishly cancelled it... even if fairly low numbers of people were actually deported.

Remind me what Labour have actually done for the education budget since they've been in? Not said: but actually done. Oh yes, they've increased the real terms budget by 1.4% but t the same time, increased teachers salaries by 6% in real terms. Given that teaching and support staff make up about 65% of a school's cost, I wonder how schools will manage that?

But it's OK, because they've put VAT on private schools (approaching 10% migration of private students to state now - 10% being the point where the policy starts actually costing money instead of raising money), increased the number of kids going into mainstream schools instead of specialist SEND schools, and made home education harder for parents whose kids can't manage school

We could have stayed in Erasmus when leaving the EU but people preferred to close the doors to British young people to keep out the foreigners.

Erasmus is around 0.05% of the UK budget, not really worth getting upset about imo.

The Tories should and could have invested in education and children's services, they choose not to.

I know it's very, very easy to spend other people's money, and it would be wonderful to have every lovely, beneficial thing.

But you still have to choose.

So which will it be: giving 10,000 young UK people a year in an EU university, or else creating 100,000 extra apprenticeships per year?

If you can't see the benefits from such a scheme there isn't a lot left to say.

£570 million (soon rising to £1billion) for 10,000 young British people to have an overseas gap year is appalling value for the UK.

Wouldn't you rather that was added to our education budget? Or else that would make a noticeable difference to the £3.3 billion we currently spend on apprenticeships. Our current spend supports 350,000 apprenticeships.

So that £570 million could either give 10,000 young UK people a year in an EU university, or else spend that same money to give 57,000 young UK people an apprenticeship which sets them up for life, rising to 100,000 per year from next year (when the Erasmus discount ends).

Even when you're spending other people's money, you still have to choose wisely where to spend it. There's only so much you can extract.

You're bringing me back to David Cameron's Coalition and tuition fees. And then, of course, all the students that were needed from abroad because of the underfunding of the universities. And then, of course, the Boris wave ....

The Right don't seem to understand that taking away opportunities is not something to be celebrated.

You might want to look into what the Rwanda scheme was and how it is different than the offshore processing other countries are considering.

You complain about immigrants taking UK jobs but you happily prevent UK people from opportunities to do the same.

Between 2020 and 2025, 27 young non-EU migrant workers were hired for every additional young British employee. 27 to 1 - WTF!

There are now 1 million NEETS, with 735,000 young people actively seeking but unable to find work. A youth worklessness rate of 16.2%, which spikes up to 25% in London.

Young people are struggling hugely to get their first job, even unskilled work.

The Rwanda scheme might have helped them more than Erasmus...

Yes that’ll happen and then what? People get sentimental over Starmer scrapping it on day one. I doubt it.

A large proportion of that list comprises things no one should laud.

Yes, cancelling the Rwanda deal looks like the epitome of wrong-headed modern Labour.

When our EU neighbours are pursuing third-country processing as fast as they can, what’s left of Labour’s judgement and ‘principles’?

But at least you acknowledge that their only achievement was winning the election - and they did nothing useful once they had the job.
