Even when you present them with pretty undeniable proof they wants to do it they just say "lefty propaganda, he said he won't" - well of course he says he won't it would cost him the election.

Yeah in a cost of living crisis let’s start charging people for basic medical care. Can’t see any problems with that!

I suspect most of the ‘NHS doesn’t work’ crowd you have no idea what it’s like to have a chronic (and in other countries expensive!) health problem and I hope for your sake that that remains the case.

spend some time of forums where type 1 diabetics or people with kidney problems in countries with insurance based systems (yes including Europe) talk about it and realise how incredibly lucky we are.

If we move to a private system it will be the exact same service but you have to pay.

the nhs isn’t failing is just propaganda. It’s once of the most efficient healthcare systems in the world. I think only Japan beat us.

Minutemaids · 05/06/2026 17:08

Look at your local Gp or outpatient DNA rate and tell me people value this sainted service.

If people had to pay health outcomes would improve as it would add value. Host a party with drink supplied and see how many half empty glasses and cans at the end of the night. Ask people to bring their own and there less waste.

The NHS is damaged beyond repair and the sooner people stop pretending otherwise, the better off we will all be

Have you lived in a country with US medical style system? I have.

In the US, my SIL had to pay thousands, just for an emergency broken arm.

In Switzerland I paid over £350 a month for the bare minimum insurance, where I had to get preauthorised phone permission regardless of the level of emergency. Couldn't be seen for minor appointments (ear infection etc).

If you've got a spare £6,000 a year for medical insurance, good for you. I don't.

Well yes, there will be something called the NHS so they can say it has remained. But only for people who cannot get health insurance.
It will not be anything even resembling what we have. It will be even worse.

What would you think of a system where NHS treatment never needs insurance, has some modest co-pays, but where there are incentives for people to use private healthcare.

Think of it like moving from a system where the whole country lives in state provided housing regardless of means or preferences, and at no rent, to a mixed housing market with a mix of private and social housing. The govt’s housing budget goes in those who most need it, not on everyone.

Unlike actual housing (which is supply-constrained for stupid reasons), healthcare becomes no longer scarce and rationed becuase new entrants come in to serve those who are able and willing to pay.

Everyone can get insurance in the European models.

Not for private insurance healthcare they cannot. They may be covered for state care.
In the UK I would dread what that would look like here.

Pollqueen · 05/06/2026 17:02

The more I hear on MN of the
"outrageous" things Reform would do, the more I find their policies appealing

The NHS is broken and needs reforming from top to bottom and if that means an implementation of partial private funding then bring it on. Seems to work perfectly well across Europe

Flipflopsandsunhat · 05/06/2026 17:00

Monty36 · 05/06/2026 16:41

They favour an insurance based system to provide healthcare.
Not everyone will get medical insurance cover. They will be left to what is left of the NHS.
They have said something about a voucher system as well but not how much a voucher would be worth and whether it would cover whatever it is you are needing treatment for. Having a baby in intensive care ? A £50 voucher won’t go far.
In America medical costs are the single most reason people become bankrupt.

The NHS needs to changes. It does. But not in this way.
There will be people who cannot get insurance. Not unless they spend a small mortgage on it anyway.
The NHS was invented for a reason. Before it people died because they could not afford medical care. Going back to those days is not progress. It is backward.

Everyone can get insurance in the European models.

GeneralPeter · 05/06/2026 16:59

tripleginandtonic · 05/06/2026 16:51

Thats patently untrue.

I don’t think it’s “beyond repair” but I do think that demographic trends coupled with our attitudes to tax mean that the NHS will get more and more fundamentally broken unless we look for a different model that brings in new sources of revenue and takes off demand.

Subsidising private health insurance and introducing co-pays is a move in the right direction.

Minutemaids · 05/06/2026 16:58

@NEGUY82

Shilling but about the NHS isn’t going to work this time. It’s a shit tip and has been for longer than the 14yrs of conservative rule.

The more money you poor in the more money it wastes. As a pp said it’s not the American system or the NHS any anyone who thinks that or tells you that are just thick.
Seen as though that’s the word the left like to use so much about everyone else that’s guilty of wrong think.

GeneralPeter · 05/06/2026 16:55

NEGUY82 · 05/06/2026 16:25

Farage wants the American model. In the EU you still need insurance, which you can't get for an existing condition.

He’s said a lot of things but the main model he’s pointed to in the past is the French one. That’s a social insurance model funded from payroll and general taxation, with co-pays.

Your attitude, strangely, is a very US one.

I spent time in the US during the Obamacare debate and it was the same tone: nothing can be changed, ours is the best system in the world, anyone wanting reform must have bad motive, etc.

NEGUY82 · 05/06/2026 16:55

Flipflopsandsunhat · 05/06/2026 16:51

But in European health systems that's not how it works. You're not making any sense.

I was talking American style (which is what I think he really wants) when I said tha.

@UniquePinkSwan I'm listening... which European model did you have in mind?

NEGUY82 · 05/06/2026 16:52

Spiffingdarling88 · 05/06/2026 16:48

Doesn't say anything about scrapping it in their manifesto... its found under protect the NHSon their website if you want a read 😂

Of course it doesn't, where in Labours did it say there were going to cut WFA??

Farage had a falling out with his Welsh counterpart on the matter, to which his response was "it'll be a national decision ahead of an election":

https://www.politico.eu/article/uk-nigel-farage-breaks-with-his-welsh-leader-over-insurance-system-nhs/

There was the time on LBC he said the exact words "I don't want it funded by taxation" - he later backtracked.

Then ofcourse there is this, it's old but he said it:

Nigel Farage breaks with his Welsh leader over insurance system for the NHS

Reform UK’s Welsh leader Dan Thomas told POLITICO he would rule out moving to an insurance-based system after Nigel Farage said it would be a “national decision ahead of a general elect…

Take people on Dialysis for example, £500 per treatment - treatment is 3 times a week. How is an ordinary working person supposed to be able to afford £1500 a week? It's more than they earn.

But in European health systems that's not how it works. You're not making any sense.

@Monty36

and the alternative? You’re more likely to die in England giving birth now than anywhere else in Europe. We really do need to stop evangelising the NHS. Unfortunately this country is full of entitled people who have abused it. It will certainly stop the GP Hobbyists im sure.

It is not for me to come up with solutions on this thread! But I do believe where there is a will there is a way.
I would take the politics out of it for a start.
I have seen the NHS good and poor. It needs to change for sure. I said that. Removing it completely is not the answer.

I wonder what the health insurers would charge people once they know the NHS even with its faults has effectively gone ?

I don’t vote reform.

I’m disabled. The nhs is a mix of great and shit.

i had medical insurance through my work which because it was a group insurance was fine with pre-existing conditions

I got refused by mine because of my pre-existing conditions. That it's a group insurance makes it just as, if not more likely. There are going to be a lot of people in the same position.

Erin1975 · 05/06/2026 16:46

They don't care. They are so focused on immigration that anything else is ignored.
