Is she claiming asylum? She must now realise what a great country England is after spending all those years trying to destroy the country. She is most welcome to pop rounds for a cuppa and a natter.

She’s certainly vociferously anti Westminster but I wouldn’t call her anti English as such, isn’t she herself half English or something?

But if she moves to England, she will then be fully ruled by Westminster. That will be her active choice in preference to what she currently has: living in a nation which, whilst not (yet) as free as she has constantly campaigned for, already benefits greatly from devolved self-rule in many areas.

"None of the Irish people who now call England/anywhere else in the UK their home were involved with seeking independence"

No, because they didn't need to. They all (or almost all) believe in it.

But it's the same with anywhere else. I'm sure most US citizens instinctively believe that they should still be independent of Britain - as they have been for 250 years. Same with India, Australia and many other places. That's the way that history has evolved.

Currently - as for the last 300 years, Scotland is part of the same sovereign nation as England - that's the default. Anybody from either country - or indeed Wales or NI - is free to want and campaign for independence now; but it just seems an extraordinary effort to go to, to achieve something that your actions strongly suggest that you don't want.

It just reminds me of an old MN thread about crazy things that toddlers have thrown tantrums about - there was one where a very little boy demanded a yoghurt and he kicked off big-time because his mum said Yes and gave him a yoghurt!

Hee hee Sturgeon's living in England!!

And now it's been reported her old man bought over 108 bog rolls at the start of the pandemic while she's telling folk not to panic buy.

It's about time this disingenuous couple got their comeuppance. No wonder she's fled Scotland.

What you don’t mean she is embraced warmly by her fellow countrymen? Why ever not, I wonder?

user281262 · 01/06/2026 09:13

Oh sweet justice!!!

If it's reciprocal freedom of movement what's the issue?

I mean Ulster Unionists have Irish passports. I met one at my British citizenship ceremony when we were discussing Ireland (my home country)

There isn’t an Issue. Quite obviously the ROI-U.K. CTA has nothing to do with Nicola Sturgeon moving to the U.K. I think the person bringing bringing up Ireland and India was most likely an SNP supporter who wanted to talk about English people being racist, colonialist past, stealing water or unkind to animals blah blah blah, it’s basically their thing and all they ever want to talk about…which is why it’s so funny when the hypocrisy is laid bare that their spiritual chief has moved to England.

EddiesTies · 01/06/2026 07:26

That said I live in Scotland and Sturgeon has all the neck of Charlie Haughey. On the take.

That's right you have no examples to back up your assertion that NS is anti-English.
12 hours later and none of you have been able to post examples of what you allege is her anti-Englishness!

She’s certainly vociferously anti Westminster but I wouldn’t call her anti English as such, isn’t she herself half English or something?

I haven’t seen any examples of actual bigotry from her, or negative statements about England/English people.

I do think the SNP and its supporters are utterly bonkers though. Not only do they have a great deal with the UK that most of them seem utterly unaware of (like the Brexiteers), their country has been actively driven into the ground by the SNP in a way which demonstrates clearly again and again that they’re not fit to govern. The education and drugs crisis seems utterly desperate and they’ve failed in both. They’ve had to be financially bailed out by Westminster time and time again. They’ve suffered a lot of scandal and corruption themselves while constantly raging about Tory sleaze.

Brits who campaigned for Brexit and now live in the EU are a horrible bunch of hypocrites too. That’s less funny tho, cos they won their referendum and caused serious, long-term damage. Sturgeon is funny because she didn’t get her way.

Scottish nationalists are the same as any other type (Reform members being another current example). Some are normal people with reasonable arguments. A huge number are also racist (or anti-English in SNP case). The racists are great at trying to hide behind the reasonable people. But we all know the reality - especially if you’ve been the unwanted person (I was English living in Scotland for 5 years).

As for the Irish issue - it would be incredibly hypocritical for anyone from RoI or NI to campaign to unify Ireland as a single country separate from the rest of the UK whilst also taking advantage of the rights the current set up has (eg freedom of movement between the countries).

Campaigning / earning money from trying to push division but then taking advantage of unity is fairly obviously hypocritical.

But Irish people can also move to England easily and you won't answer my question about that.
Before Brexit, so could EU peopl.
Wanting independence from England doesn't mean you want to end free movement.

I think the big difference is that the RoI has been independent from the UK for over a century. None of the Irish people who now call England/anywhere else in the UK their home were involved with seeking independence... although the Irish people of the time who did campaign for and secure independence had reasons for wanting to be free which went far beyond mere politics.

If England/rUK and Scotland were currently long-established as separate independent countries and Nicola now decided that she wanted to move to England (assuming England would be willing to admit her under whatever immigration criteria were in place), nobody would think anything at all of it.

It's very, very different indeed to focus the main thrust of your career for many years on campaigning against being allied with England, and then to decide to move to personally ally yourself to England. It's a bit like the local vicar campaigning furiously and relentlessly against a proposed new strip club in his town, but then, when it gets the go-ahead and is opened anyway, becoming a member and going there every evening.

AnonymityAnonymity · 31/05/2026 18:57

Of course they do! That's why I don't understand this thread and the outrage of pp that Nicola is living there. Absolutely ridiculous and down right nastiness imo.

How do you feel about Brits who live in Spain who were furiously in favour of Brexit (whether they got the vote or not) - to prevent the EU having any say in how the UK is run?

Why shouldn't Scottish people who want independence not live in other countries?

It wouldn’t bother you, if you didn’t want to live elsewhere?

Gwenhwyfar · 31/05/2026 22:00

"The SNP is clearly anti English, you say otherwise…we’re going to just have to disagree."

If you make an assertion it's on you to back it up!

"Can we at least agree NS moving to England is funny?"

I've already said I don't think it's funny so, no.

Ok, nice chat.

Yes Irish people can move to England, what has this got to do with anything? What are you talking about? What is your question?

"its bollocks that Nicola/SNP is not anti English, it’s the SNPs whole grift. I really can’t be bothered to go through every example with you tediously arguing that is anti Westminster not anti English for a few hours"

So, you're admitting that you can't give any examples

"The fact that she has now moved to London is hilarious, do you genuinely not find the irony and hypocrisy funny?"

No.

I’m saying you are quite clearly upset for some reason that I can’t fathom and I think you want to argue about something that I simply don’t have an interest in arguing about. The SNP is clearly anti English, you say otherwise…we’re going to just have to disagree.

Can we at least agree NS moving to England is funny?

I’m not saying she can’t live in England? What are you talking about? What has made you think that? I’m saying it’s funny that she has moved to England because she’s spent her whole life attempting to break up the U.K. that has allowed her to move to England from Scotland so easily

But Irish people can also move to England easily and you won't answer my question about that.

Because you're saying Nicola Sturgeon can't live in England because she wants her country to be free of English rule, but everyone else who want their country to be free of English rule can live in England. Or is that not your position?

I’m not saying she can’t live in England? What are you talking about? What has made you think that? I’m saying it’s funny that she has moved to England because she’s spent her whole life attempting to break up the U.K. that has allowed her to move to England from Scotland so easily

I have nothing against people living wherever they like but it seems very strange, nay hypocritical, for Nicola Sturgeon to live in England after she has spent her whole career being anti-English. Maybe she has decided that we aren't so bad after all.

NS is anti-Westminster not anti-English.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 31/05/2026 21:47

I live in London. I've been keeping an eye out for NS. A house very close to us is likely to go up for sale soon. Imagine the horror of having NS as a neighbour! Apart from anything else, we only have on street parking, so there would be no room for a camper van.
