Greens in London- I must have been living under a rock!

I have been quite busy at work recently so not following local politics that closely, but I had been reading the leaflets through my door and got the impression that my local council was a simple Labour v Lib Dem race.

I’m in a London Borough with a long history of Labour control. Thought it was time for a change, duly cast my votes for the Lib Dems only to wake up today and find that the Greens had come within 100 votes of unseating Labour in my ward, they have won loads of other wards, Labour has lost control and it’s now NOC with Greens second biggest party.
And the borough next door has a Green mayor and there are Green controlled councils all over London!

The Lib Dems are nowhere to be seen.

(I am ignoring Tories and Reform as they are totally irrelevant round here). How did I not see this coming?

I have nothing against the Greens, would possibly have voted for them if I’d realised they were a viable second party.

Absolute rubbish! I’m no Labour fan, but they’ve introduced a lot of extra regulation in this area. Awaab’s law being one example. How exactly the Greens going to make it any better???

Haven't you ever heard of women saying things that are anti women's rights?

Don't you think people can ever be racist towards their own race or culture?

Polanski may or may not be antisemitic himself. But he has certainly tolerated antisemitic comments from lots of Green candidates. Two of them were arrested days before the local elections for starters and there are loads more examples.

I tend to drive the same route every day from a fairly high average income bit of my borough to the most affluent part. Lots of Labour and Lib dem placards in gardens, maybe 2 or 3 Green party posters taped to the inside of windows. I obviously wasn’t in the right parts to see this sea of Green that you did. Must get out more…

I find the Greens really sinister, both in terms of the groups with whom they coalesce, and also some of their policies. They seem trendy at the moment for whatever reason however they scare the hell out of me.

Its people voting for an environmental party which has no clear policies on saving or improving the environment at all. It's always people first (more money for me, more for trans, morefor muslims/gazans), animals, trees and nature last

It’s a real shame the current Labour administration were not enforcing laws that already exist to prevent poor habitation in rental properties. Let’s hope the Greens have more luck encouraging the civil servants who work at the council to do their jobs properly.

I think this reflects your perception - fuelled by the media - on Labour’s performance in government, rather than reality.

As an example Keir Starmer and his govt have successfully got rid of the two child limit benefit cap. This will contribute towards reducing inequality and alleviating poverty.

But with a population and media that on the whole ignores actual policy change, in favour of vague notions that ‘Keir’s a bit rubbish’, the actual policies that have been enacted get overlooked.

There SEND white paper is what I’m referring to, which would mean terrifying cuts to provision for disabled children. Most mainstream schools will be made much worse off, because of the loss of EHCP top up funding, whilst having to meet the needs of far more complex children. It’s an absolute pigs ear and the consultation is up on 18th May. So we hope they may see sense. But the unions, parents and Headteacher should all be quite worried.
If you don’t have a special needs or disabled child but have children in school this is going to hugely impact them too.

A lot of homes have serious mould and damp issues. If they are LA homes then that can be addressed , if private rentals then landlords need to be held accountable.

Add to that their deluded aspirations for a world (that would include the UK) without borders, climate reparations of up to 2.5% of national income (who’s going to pay for that?), ending of prison sentences that would attract sentences of two years (great, so no deterrent to those crimes such as burglary anymore then). And scrapping the nuclear deterrent. I can’t see the Greens investing anything in the armed forces.

The orthodox Jewish community is represented on Hackney council. I think they have about six councillors, who all run under the Conservative banner and regularly get voted in - the only Tories on the council (that I know of)

Yep, living in one of the most orthodox Jewish wards in Hackney, I now have 2 Tory councillors, a Green mayor and a ex Labour currently Independent MP. Certainly a diverse representation of democracy, which I think reflects the diverse nature of Hackney.
TBH am fully expecting Polanski to run in our constituency at the next GE. Abbott likely won’t stand again (she only did it this time cos Starmer tried to block her), Zack lives locally & looking at the mayoral result, I wouldn’t be surprised if he got elected either.

I actually don’t understand why the greens did so well. Hackney boroughs. I guess it’s a vote of loss of confidence in Labour, but…. The greens?! Why? Is Hackney an anti semitic borough?

Everyone I know supported Green. None are remotely anti-semitic.

In the run up I heard a few people in London very fired up about voting Green. By and large they were comfortably well-off people. The sort who will end up paying the new mansion tax.

But you can see all the Green party London councillors here:

They'll get between around £11,000-15,000 a year for the basic role (plus expenses, and more for more senior work) and it can be a second job. 10-35 hours a week.

With that in mind, I'd like to encourage more Mumsnetters to consider becoming councillors as I think it's the type of role that works well around childcare.
