The most amazing thing about these threads (was the same during the referendum) is how little the SNP supporters seem to understand how off-putting their interactions with others are.

Someone on the local FB site always blames Westminster for the chaos that is the West Highland line (including a man who collapsed on the train because of the cold), despite Scotrail being Scottish government owned and run, so fecking tedious.

So if GERS shows the notional position of everything, including the block grant, it includes debt allocated to Scotland, NOT debt run up by Scotland.

So how can it be the fault of any Scottish government if there is a deficit in GERS, when they are only allocated block grant which cannot be overspent, and the remaining debt is run up on the proportion controlled by the UK government and spent on reserved matters?

It can't, but obsfucation about finances allows the argument that Scotland is too poor to be independent to be touted.

It isn't. Northern Ireland is more impoverished than us, and it didn't stop them having the right to self-determination guaranteed in the Good Friday Agreement, should they choose to have a referendum. There is no 'but can they afford it?' clause for them, but it is an argument constantly levelled at us.

The one thing I'm really glad about regarding the almost certainty that the SNP will be in charge for another five years is the fact that they will be the ones that will have to deal with the 5 Billion pound black hole in the Scottish finances that is forecast by 2030. It's going to be brutal, they caused it with their fiscal incompetence they deserve to get the blame for it.

Lol. If you actually believe this (as opposed to just stirring), then I would say, just let us go then if we are soooo expensive. SNP are streets ahead in the polls because Scots see more and more every day why we urgently need to be independent. We are not a nation that wanted brexit. We don’t want Reform.

I also think Reform have gained popularity because they have filled a political void. None of the mainstream political parties wanted to address immigration issues for fear of being perceived as racist. And so this is what we end up with.

We had a 'share' of HS2, so the debt from infrastructure projects is added to our spending as if it was spent by the Scottish Government.

So the costs are deducted BEFORE the block grant is paid, and paid by the UK government on our behalf. The block grant is a fixed amount and no extra is given to the Scottish Government.

The UK government spends our money for us, and when they overspend, they allocate the deficit to us, which is the deficit reflected in the GERS figures.
