Who are Scottish people voting for next month?

How have comparable small independent nations like Ireland say, or Denmark managed?

What do they have that Scotland does not & so cannot herself be granted future independence too?

Have you missed that the Scottish people voted to remain part of the uk?

what is it specifically about being a small nation that you think would mean an independent Scotland would be successful?

It’s like saying Zara and Topshop are both clothes retailers so why did Topshop go bust but Zara didn't. They should have been equally successful according to your logic right?

No.

We pay:

UK Govt.
Scottish Govt.
Council Tax.

HMRC is the sole agency that administers & collects tax - bar the different, excess SG rate. This is then transferred to the UK Treasury to pay back out to Scotland.

Before devoloution we paid tax to HMRC.

After devoloution we paid tax to HMRC then later an additional amount direct to the SG.

Politics aside, all areas of the UK are underfunded bar London & the SE. Hence Johnson's famous "levelling up" because the UK is most assuredly not a level playing field.

Look, this is from the actual Scottish government site:
"Scottish Income Tax is not a fully devolved tax. HMRC is responsible for the collection and management of Scottish Income Tax, which includes the identification of Scottish taxpayers. The Scottish Income Tax collected by HMRC is paid to the Scottish Government."

So yes, the income tax on wages is coming in full back to the Scottish government, it just takes a wee detour. It would be insane if they would have raised income tax on people in Scotland just for that money to leave Scotland and go to Westminster, even the SNP can't be that dim.
There are other things than the devolved responsibilities that a country needs to spend money on, defence, diplomatic services, immigration and border control, monetary services. These are all things Scotland will have to spend money on once/if it is independent.

Taxes flow from Scots to London bar the Holyrood income tax.
All VAT, income tax, NI, dividend income, savings tax, IHT - all to London.

Income tax stays in Scotland. What would be the point of higher income tax for Scottish workers (above £30K) compared to the rest UK ones if the money would leave Scotland?

I suggest that Labour, the Conservatives, LibDems & Reform form one party if they want to stop the SNP because like Northern Ireland unionism is divided. And in the UK the party in government calls the shots - like BREXIT. No less a momentous event than Scotland leaving the UK.

So if Westminster could take us all out of the EU, the Holyrood government should have the right to take Scotland out of the UK & back into the EU.

Apropos Spain stopping Scotland rejoining. That was their first position. They now have a second. They'll let Scotland rejoin unless the UK gives up Gibraltar.

Quid Pro Quo.

You were the one seeking attention by going on and on and on about it when you’d been proved wrong several times. 😂😂😂

I‘m not going back through your screeds of boring nonsense again to find it. It’s like trying to catch smoke

Yeah what you mean is you can’t because you are wrong.

here is where I talk about FPTP. The word Westminster in the sentence makes it clear I’m not talking about Holyrood.

It's very clear anyway that the only reason the
SNP get a majority in Westminster is down to the FPTP voting system they do not get anywhere near even 50% of the votes.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 20/04/2026 23:26

No it’s not. You said that the trigger for the referendum was the SNP having a majority at Westminster. Which only happened in 2015. The referendum was in 2014.

You missed the word Westminster in the sentence. 🙈Your reading comprehension is clearly what’s all over the place here.

From Pednathise Head to Muckle Flugga, Ness Point to Malin Head, England has historically sought complete sovereignty & fealty.

The "establisment" is still jealous of it's remaining sovereignty post Irish rebellion & secession & it is damned if the Scots & Welsh will also secede. One Nation, One Country, One Parliament is their real desire. It always has been.

Contrast the unionism above with the unionism generally espoused here on mumsnet ie love of the union, it's peoples, countries & cultures. I can understand & sympathise with the latter.

But the former example of unionism is arrogant, uncaring & unfair. And a simple google search into the United Kingdom's flawed "hyper-centralisation" & "aloof political power" will reveal the myriad of institutes that conclude this.

Same here. I would have thought Ukraine would have shown people what happens when you give up your nuclear arms.

Have you any idea what's going on at Faslane?

It has failed multiple safety inspections, and is unfit for purpose.

My local MP was caught shagging a submarine commander just after her husband was charged with spying for China. Naval commander resigned, MP still in Westminister, probably all our nuclear secrets in Beijing.

There is a great deal to be proud about in our armed forces but Faslane is not it.

Thanks to US pressure we've bought F-35's capable of dropping nuclear weapons. It is no longer our only nuclear option so it is a £100 billion white elephant with a deplorable safety record.

Mismanagement of it by the UK government is glaring and undeniable.

InconsequentialFerret · 18/04/2026 10:13

Cameron mistakenly believing that "No" was a formality and it would kill the issue stone dead, just as he did with his Brexit gamble and subsequent miscalculation.

You'd think the idiot might have learnt from the first one how things can potentially not go the way you envisaged.
