’This paper examines the impact of the UK's decision to leave the European Union (Brexit) in 2016. Using almost a decade of data since the referendum, we combine simulations based on macro data with estimates derived from micro data collected through our Decision Maker Panel survey. We estimate that investment was reduced by between 12% and 18%, employment by 3% to 4% and productivity by 3% to 4%. These large negative impacts reflect a combination of elevated uncertainty, reduced demand, diverted management time, and increased misallocation of resources from a protracted Brexit process. Comparing these with contemporary forecasts – providing a rare macro example to complement the burgeoning micro-literature of social science predictions – shows that these forecasts were accurate over a 5-year horizon, but they underestimated the impact over a decade.’

How do you know? Presumably some UK sectors have benefitted from the UK/Aus deal.

Do you think French or Irish beef farmers will benefit from the Mercosur deal?

In addition, several publications on the continent claim that France has been humiliated over Mercosur. French lawmakers voted against the deal and Ursula von der Leyen went behind Macron's back to push through the provisional deal - she didn't even consult Macron/the French government. She also ignored the European Parliament.

I remember that James O'Brien referred to George Eustice as George Useless if that helps. I didn't find him very impressive myself - one isn't obliged to like every politician.

Ah, yes, a quote from Liz Webster - although it should be noted that Liz Webster is a somewhat fanatical anti-Brexit activist. A former Lib Dem candidate, founder of Farmers for a People's Vote, her husband's field was used by Led By Donkey's in 2019 for a giant anti-Brexit message claiming, “Britain now wants to remain.” I believe she is now a member of The Rejoin EU Party.

If the UK government are not happy with the Australia deal, your link says that it could be terminated and renegotiated with just six months’ notice in writing. “The current government has the power to act and improve the agreement if they want to."
