Why isn’t Trump being overthrown?

I’m sorry if this is a really thick question but I’m guessing that the answers will be multi-faceted.

Why isn’t Trump being overthrown internally in the US? He is presiding over a shit show and trampling over the constitution from what I understand. But there doesn’t seem to be massive resistance to this (or at least none reported). Can anyone explain why this is, please. Genuine question.

The non decent ones will turn on him in a heartbeat when the stock market goes through the floor and the price at the pump goes through the roof. “It’s the economy, stupid”."

This- it's always this. I hope and expect that when the time comes, the personality cult goes with him- Vance doesn't have the style- and all his yes men get scapegoated, blamed for propping him up and washed anyway. I don't know who is going to get the job of diverting the rivers to hose through the Augean stables of selfish incompetents and clear up the mess. Perhaps a woman- when there's shit all over the carpet and the walls and the ceiling, it'll be a woman's job to clear it up, then she can be pushed out of the way so a young white man- preferably quite good looking in a wholesome all American way- reasonably decent but knows how to play the game.

Bernie Sanders is too decent and far too old. Biden was doddering and Trump is worse. I do think he has dementia and it's not even mild at this stage. I went down the rabbit hole on this a bit in the past few days, watching videos analysing his State of the Union address for example- and I do think the commentators who think he has to be whacked up to the eyeballs on go-go juice before he's wheeled on to rant for 2 hours are correct. He even forgot the word "Alzheimers" FGS.

"At a certain age, about 86, 87, he started getting, what do they call it?” Trump asked, pointing to his forehead and looking toward White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
“Alzheimer’s,” Leavitt replied.
“Like an Alzheimer’s thing. Well, I don’t have it,” Trump added."

The seeds of dementia are sown waaay before it is diagnosed, generally. My dad had it in his late 60s and was passing those types of cognitive tests that Trump boasts about "acing" while he had quite clearly already lost a lot of marbles and too dangerous to be off farming on his own.. By the time he was far gone enough for diagnosis he was only a couple of years away from a dementia nursing home and death followed a couple of years after that.

God, the news is so depressing. I was just listening to David Milliband on LBC talking about what may happen if this goes on. Fuck Trump and Netanyahu. A pox on both of them.

@MushMonster as BIossomtoes says, the MAGA lot might finally turn when fuel and food costs go through the roof.

I wish I could believe this to be the case. Unfortunately there seems to be a large swathe of base who will stand by him even if they lose the shirt off their backs. They believe him when he says they must suffer short term pain for long term benefit.

They’ll happily walk through fire for him while he and his family line their pockets.

He likes to boast that he is the best at everything. One thing I’ll give him - he’s the greatest con artist ever lived.

I was expecting more people to have changed their mind about Trump, given his latest pearls and a costly war abroad, to which he seems to have jumped in fully unprepared. Specially, I was thinking that MAGA would turn on him in mass.
I did not expect Trump to be so wreckless and destructive, at all. I was well shocked when I heard his first speech as President. And here we are, going down his list.

I’m surprised that people are surprised by his recklessness.

He showed who he was in his first term and of course the second term would be worse when he realised that he would not even be held to account for inciting the 6 Jan insurrection. Imagine the enormous boost to his already overinflated ego.

It’s also his last term in office (we hope) so why not just burn the whole damn house down?

I think the biggest issue is not Trump himself but the fact that he represents a significant portion of American population. The fact that hardcore MAGA are literally 99% behind him no matter what vile thing he says or does, no matter how many promises he breaks, because he is effectively the anti Obama candidate.

There is a huge chunk of middle America who shares his views, that power makes right and that USA is centre of universe and to hell with anybody else.

I think that is a more disturbing reality.

Hopefully, there are still enough decent Americans to say enough is enough and realise the enormous damage he is doing to their country and international standing.

BIossomtoes · 24/03/2026 09:25

MushMonster · 24/03/2026 07:35

How? How is this possible?

The disapproval rating is 56% and growing.

Maggiethecat · 24/03/2026 08:54

MushMonster · 24/03/2026 07:35

How? How is this possible?

This is why countries are building and strengthening alliances elsewhere despite some American politicians trying to reassure them that Trump will soon be gone and normalcy will resume.

The American people elected
someone so clearly dangerous and unfit for office and now we see that the supposed guardrails have collapsed.

And it can happen again.

IdentityCris · 24/03/2026 08:38

I think in practice an awful lot of Americans are cringing with embarrassment, rather like we were with Johnson. With both of them, you can absolutely guarantee that they cannot stop themselves lying and simply moving from one crisis to the next. Fortunately for us, the difference is that we had a mechanism for getting rid of our international embarrassment.

MushMonster · 24/03/2026 07:35

Neolara · 23/03/2026 22:51

Trump still has a 40% approval rating. Lots of people think he's doing a marvellous job..

How? How is this possible?

Maggiethecat · 23/03/2026 23:12

Are Americans not embarrassed by this buffoon?

He and his team had no objective or exit strategy for war against Iran, never mind anticipating Iran’s counter attack options.

He gives a 48 hour ultimatum for Iran to open up the HS and then backs down and talks about a 5 day period for discussions with Iran and if unsuccessful for the US “we’ll just keep bombing our little hearts out”.

And we thought Dubya was thick?

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 23/03/2026 23:10

PersephoneParlormaid · 08/03/2026 07:41

Plenty of people would like to get rid of Starmer but that’s not happening either.

What a ridiculous comparison. They are chalk and cheese.

I really hope you're right. I do think there were quite a lot of reasonably sensible voters who voted Trump on a "low tax ticket" expecting him to not do much / to be contained despite the rhetoric and are now horrified.

How terribly naive of them.

daisychain01 · 22/03/2026 15:51

Bernie Sanders wouldn't get close to power, so what you are getting is extreme and neo liberalism....there's isn't a left.

if only Bernie Sanders could get more widespread support. He's a thoroughly decent person, and everything that Trump isn't. He talked on a broadcast yesterday about imposing a wealth tax on the billionaires, well that's never going to happen.

the trouble is the US today is built on a culture of such excessive greed with an even greater divide between the rich and poor than in UK. Sanders would never stand a chance because he's just too decent and not sufficiently cut-throat to ever get voted in as President. He'd be mincemeat.

dwordle · 22/03/2026 14:06

Most Americans don't support Trump. The problem with America is there politics is so screwed and there's really little choice.

Bernie Sanders wouldn't get close to power, so what you are getting is extreme and neo liberalism....there's isn't a left.

It's going the same way in the UK.

Alexandra2001 · 22/03/2026 07:26

RingoJuice · 19/03/2026 06:32

Because over half of Americans like myself voted for Trump and actually like what he’s doing for the most part?

I dont think you'll like high prices for fuel (priced in USD) higher inflation, a poor economy as the rest of world goes into recession.

The wider problem is most Americans are thick, i mean when the UK had a school shooting, we banned handguns, when the US has a school shooting, they celebrate the right to have more guns.....

How thick is that?

dwordle · 22/03/2026 07:17

daisychain01 · 20/03/2026 14:41

Back to the original question, a further reason why Trump hasn't been "overthrown" is that there is nobody tripping over themselves to take over. Who in their right mind would ever want to have to undo the current shitshow Trump is causing.

We can only hope the situation is brought back under control somehow by the time the US elections happen, otherwise its going to create even more problems for the US and the world to have to clean up his mess.

And Obama warned Americans about this....no one listened.

dwordle · 22/03/2026 07:16

He's not popular but you can't overthrow a president, he's got a term to sit. However, the mid terms offer an opportunity to remove him through legal process.

Over throwing leaders is something that happens in dictatorships.... hopefully it never comes to that because it never ends well.....you end up with a military regime

besides anyone who wants to overthrow a legit elected leader, seem basically mini dictators

A President has far greater powers than a Prime Minister. It’s nearly impossible to ‘overthrow’ anyone over there.

flapjackfairy · 20/03/2026 10:12

RingoJuice · 19/03/2026 11:46

Mass deportations. This is my ‘fix so many things wrong with my country’ button. And nobody ever thought to push it before Trump. They estimate that 3 million illegals have left since Trump was elected, at this rate perhaps most of the Bidenwave will have been forced to leave

so.that is the only policy that counts? What happens when the national debt ( already over 100 percent of GDP) becomes unsustainable and everything stalls ?
The economy is already on the slide and if the country keeps racking up trillions in debt how long do you think that can go on ?
Tariffs are destroying farmers , bankrupcies are up and job creation down and Trump is happily destroying American trade alliances . Meanwhile tourism is tanking due to social media monitoring and fears around ICE.
Whether the average MAGA supporters wants to admit it or not no.country can survive alone and alienating the whole world is going to be difficult to reverse once this madness is over. Trump.will be dead and buried soon and everyone left behind will continue to suffer for a v long time to.come. With the exception of the mega rich of course whose wealth has skyrocketed under his leadership.

IdentityCris · 19/03/2026 15:48

Wizeman · 19/03/2026 11:46

More people were killed by ice under Obama by the way.

Tarrifs is completely fair for him to do as the u.s president.

Greenland was definitely a step to far.

The total number of people who died in ICE custody during the eight years Obama was in office was 63. So far, in the 5 years Trump has been in office, it's 84. And that's not counting the people killed out In the community by ICE officers.

Trump's use of tariffs has been found by the US courts to be not only unfair but illegal.
